IGBT Inverter for DC Traction Energy Recovery

Scheron supplies voltage inverter systems. That interconnect the DC and AC networks. The principle of the system is to provide energy ow from DC to AC networks. This unit, including its control unit has a reliable design and is suitable for very heavy traction duty. Scheron DC switchgear, control unit and DC lter provide necessary conditions for the inverter. A brake unit (in option) is installed on the inverter input (DC side) in order to prevent any transient overvoltage on the DC bus due to an unexpected loss of AC network connection (LV or MV side).

General application
Due to the braking energy, the line voltage increases. Thus, beyond a dened threshold the inverter switches ON in order to generate the braking energy on the middle voltage network through a transformer. Rectier Mode Inverter Mode

The Scheron inverter is an IGBT two level inverter, the voltage harmonic distortion is kept to a low level and reduced by application of the sine or LCL lter. This inverter is designed for customer facility optimisation, and offers the following overall benets: High efciency High energy saving Compactness, modular construction, front access for all servicing, robust and shock resistant Low maintenance, easily removable phase arm modules Low noise signature, clean for the network Longer lifespan Reduction of pollution Moreover, the Scheron inverter can be easily added to any existing installation. Before inverter installation, Scheron carries out an electrical study on the whole system to avoid network resonance. This dynamic study also denes the level of energy saving and calculate the average approximate power of the inverter by considering trains with realistic load, off-hours trafc. Scheron submits a proposal of an inverter with a set-point value based on the data retrieved from this study. Further investigations may be performed in order to nd the most effective locations for any additional inverter. The harmonic content is considerably reduced with an IGBT system when compared to a thyristor inverter. The target is to regenerate high quality energy (low circulation current, low harmonics). The necessary equipment including DC switchgear, DC lters, IGBT inverter, cabling, LV/MV inverter transformer, MV switchgear and global control system are also in the scope of Scheron. Heat release for proper ventilation capacity is available. The inverter system can be provided with a dedicated transformer for the inverter or a common uncoupled transformer for the rectier group and the inverter (one of both secondary windings used for the rectier group and one dedicated secondary winding for the inverter).

Electrical parameters: Rated DC input voltage: 750 V, 1500 W Frequency: 50 60 Hz PWM frequency: Between 2 - 3 kHz 500 kW, 1000 kW, 2000 kW per substation with specic peak load capabilities Site conditions: Ambient temperature: -20C to 40C Installation: indoor Relative humidity: Up to 90% Power factor: The power factor is close to 1. Application: The typical application in traction eld consists to save the train braking energy. The Scheron inverter automatically turns on during the braking phase and converts DC energy to the MV network. Forced Air Cooling: Scheron offers an air cooled inverter to increase reliability. An air cooled inverter has: Lower auxiliary consumption High efciency Very compact, no need for a cubicle for water circuit (pump, lter, exchanger) Higher MTBF

Braking

Normally, the braking energy would be evacuated by resistor as heating dissipation. Thanks to our inverter, this energy will be supplied to the network, and the global energy consumption will be lower.

Network lter
The network lter is designed according to: CEI 61000-2-4 CEI 61800-3 IEEE 519 Decree of 23 April 2008 (in France only) The network lter can be: LCL lter Sine lter
