WEE KIM WEE SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION REGISTRATION OF COURSES Semester 1 2013-2014 (First Year Students)

1.

REGISTRATION OF COURSES First year students need to fulfill the academic requirements of 4 Core Courses, 3 GER-CORE courses and 4 Unrestricted Electives (UE) in the Academic Year 2013-2014. 1.1 Year 1 Core and GER-CORE Courses (compulsory) All Year 1 students are required to take CS2005 (Speech and Argumentation) which is a CORE course. In Semester 1 and II, half the Year 1 cohort will be assigned to this course and the other half will be assigned to the GER-CORE CS0204 (Basic Media Writing). All Year 1 students have to take CS0201 as a GER-CORE unless they have been granted exemptions (for students from the poly route). As these core courses are automatically allocated to you by the system, students need NOT register for them via the registration system, STARS. However, if any of these core courses are not allocated to you, please alert the course advisor immediately. Please email ask_WKWSCI@ntu.edu.sg for matters pertaining to course registration. 1.2 List of COREs and GER-COREs taken by Year 1 students: 1.2 CS0201 Foundations of Communication Studies/(GER-CORE)/SEM I CS2002 Information Literacy and Interpretation(CORE)/SEM II CS0203 Media in Singapore (GER-CORE)/SEM II CS0204 Basic Media Writing (GER-CORE)/SEM I & SEM II CS2005 Speech and Argumentation (CORE)/SEM I & SEM II CS2006 Visual Literacy and Communication (CORE)/SEM II CS2008 Fundamentals of Research (CORE)/SEM II

Students may take CS courses at the lower level as UEs if they so wish. Please click on this link to check on the types of GER-PE courses available in Semester I, 2013. https://wish.wis.ntu.edu.sg/webexe/owa/aus_subj_cont2.main

Notes on GERs: For WKWSCI Students, GER comprises GER-CORE, GER-PE and GER-UE. (i) GER-PE is divided into 4 sub-areas of studies in key fields of knowledge comprising Art, Humanities & Social Sciences [GER-PE(AHSS)], Science, Technology & Society [GER-PE(STS)], Business & Management [GER-PE(BM)]and Liberal Studies [GER-PE(LS)]. The courses are offered to students from all programmes. WKWSCI students are required to take 3 AUs from GER-PE (AHSS), 3 AUs from GERPE (STS), 3 AUs from GER-PE (BM), 3 AUs from GER-PE(LS) and the remaining 3 AUs from any one of the four categories. (ii) GER-UE refers to any other courses offered at the School and University level but do not count as Core or GER-PE for your concentration. Practicum courses offered by WKWSCI are NOT open to first year students during the first semester. However, poly students and other students with relevant media experiences may get special approval by the school to take such courses.
