1: What was the accurate concentration of the approximately 2.5M HCl, as determined from NaOH titrations? Show your calculations, with brief explanatory text of why you are manipulating the numbers as you are.

HCl + NaOH NaCL + H2O Titration done with one colour indicator Phenolphthalein : VNaOH, avg = (25.25mL+25.20mL+25.18mL+26.06mL)/4 = 25.42 mL CHCl = (VNaOH)(CNaOH)(Vvolumetric)/(Vpipette)(VHCl) = (25.42)(0.100M)(250mL)/(10mL)(25mL) CHCl = 2.54 M 0.04 Titration done with two colour indicator Bromocrescol green(BCG): VNaOH, avg = (25.02mL+25.84mL+25.22mL+24.85mL)/4 = 25.23 mL CHCl = (VNaOH)(CNaOH)(Vvolumetric)/(Vpipette)(VHCl) = (25.23)(0.100M)(250mL)/(10mL)(25mL) CHCl = 2.52 M 0.01
II: What was the accurate concentration of the approximately 2.5M HCl, as determined by titration with Na2CO3 ? Show your calculations, with brief explanatory text of why you are manipulating the numbers as you are.

MW of Na2CO3 = (22.990g/mol)(2)+(12.011g/mol)+(15.999g/mol)(3) = 105.988 g/mol Moles of Na2CO3 used in titration: n1 = 0.1066g*105.988g/mol = 1.005 x 10^-3 mol n2 = 0.1075g*105.988g/mol = 1.014 x10^-3 mol n3 = 0.1077g*105.988g/mol = 1.016 x10^-3 mol average moles of Na2CO3 = 1.011 x 10^-3 mol

Na2CO3 + 2HCl H2O + 2NaCl + CO2 Thus, [1Na2CO3 : 2HCl] nHCl = (1.011x10^-3)(2) = 2.023x10^-3 mol Average Volume of HCl before heating: VHCl = (19.40mL+18.86mL+19.02mL)/3 = 18.42 mL CHCl = n/v = (2.023x10^-3 mol)/(18.42mL) * (1000mL/1L) * (0.25L/0.01L) CHCl = 2.74 M
III: Are these two concentrations the same? Comment on any discrepancies, how they may have come about, and what you mean by the same.

The two concentrations for HCl should be the same because both are the result of the same diluting process. However, the calculated HCl concentration has a difference of 0.22M. This discrepancy may have been caused by both instrumental and human error. Instrumental uncertainties are related to the use of measuring devices. For example, a 50 mL burette has an uncertainty of 0.02 mL. This means the value read from the instrument can be 0.02 mL off from the true value. Another source of error is human error, for example, a tiny spill that could have occurred from liquid transfer. So, despite the errors, the calculated concentrations can be considered the same since the difference is small compared to the result and therefore can be neglected.
