On-board interest on diverse counters: John Keells Holdings was the on-board front-runner with active investor interest. The counter further appreciated recording significant amount of large trade blocks and settled at LKR240.2 with a gain of 4.0%. Sampath Bank also attracted investor interest supported by a single transaction of c 92k shares at LKR180.0. SAMP also depicted a gain of 2.3% and ended at LKR180.3. Access Engineering, Kelani Tyres and Lanka IOC also gathered on-board interest with buying pressure. Continued retail streak on TFC.X and renewed interest on TWOD: Retailers continued their streak on The Finance [Non-Voting] and interest was renewed in Touchwood Investments. Both counters ended gaining 6.2% and 30.8% respectively.

Sri Lanka regulatory compliance under spotlight Sri Lanka's securities regulator and the bourse is holding a seminar to help listed firm become familiar with rules, especially recently issued directives. "The symposium will focus on directives issued on Minimum Public Float, Related Party Transactions, and Disclosure Requirements for Directors Dealings in Shares, " the SEC said in a statement. "This will be an ideal opportunity for listed entities to familiarize themselves on the implementation of the aforesaid Directives and understand its implications. Governor Nivard Cabraal will announce a 'Master Plan on the Consolidation of the Financial Sector' to the sector at a forum on Friday. "Thereafter, one-to-one discussions will be held with all banks and non-bank financial institutions so as to guide these institutions in accordance with the newly announced Plan, " the regulator said in a statement. The new port city is estimated to cost US$ 400 to 450 million, initially for piling and filling of land and a Chinese investor has come forward for the project. One of the internationally recognized maritime companies, Master Divers was given the contract to forward a soil report for this project which in turn was handed over to the Chinese company to go ahead with construction. Job Slump Sends Aussie Lower as Rate-Cut Bets Revived Australian employers unexpectedly cut jobs in December, capping the worst year of full-time losses since 1992, sending the Aussie to the lowest in more than three years and reviving prospects for interest-rate reductions. The number of people employed dropped by 22,600, the statistics bureau said in Sydney today, compared with the median estimate for a 10,000 gain in a Bloomberg News survey of 27 economists. Unemployment held at 5.8 percent as the participation rate fell to the lowest in almost eight years.
