WHAT ARE MUDRAS
THEIR USE IN THERAPY
A SCIENTIFIC LOOK
TATVA YOGA MUDRA VIGYAN
TATVA in Sanskrit means an element. It refers to the elements of which this body is
made or the five building blocks viz. Energy, Wind, Ether, Solid matter and Liquid
matter.
YOGA is commonly & erroneously understood to be body postures which promote
better, nay, near perfect health. Actually that is only one branch of Yoga.
Yoga essentially means the SUM TOTAL of anything. The sum total of human life,
is not only perfect physical health but physical, mental, spiritual and social health in
totality . The different types of Yoga are but different chapters of this "sum total" of
knowledge.
MUDRA in Sanskrit means a seal, a symbol, a posture made by fingers or hands.
VIGYAN similarly would mean science - a methodical, analytical, logical study of
the subject.
Thus TATVA YOGA MUDRA VIGYAN (Mudra Vigyan) could be defined as:
The disciplined science of finger and hand postures
dealing with the elements forming the body."
THE NEED FOR MUDRA VIGYAN
Our body is a unique creation of nature. The 'Supreme Authority' is the
BRAIN controlling each and every activity necessary for the perfect
functioning of this marvel of nature
Over and above this the brain has to defend the body from it's natural
enemies. It is essential that all information to/from each and every organ is
effectively conveyed. There should be NO communication gaps
Bad habits and misuse of equipment provided, are the saboteurs. These
damage the communication lines from the brain to the various organs. The
communication lines are the nerves. They become tense. The result is
called "Nervous Tension"
Mudra Vigyan helps restore the tension in the nerves to the default
value, messages start flowing smoothly, the "BRAIN can give clear
solutions and the organs can comply effectively.
Dealing with nerves Mudra Vigyan is a neural science
HOW MUDRAS WORK
Music is sweet only when the tension in the instrument's strings is correct.
This tension can be corrected by tightening the string end on a peg.
Similarly, the music of life is sweet only when the tensions in the body's
nerves are correct.
Nature has provided the bodies with similar fixtures at the end of the
body's extremities - the hands and the feet.
Just by folding different fingers in different manners, at different
joints and to different extents, different tensions can be provided to
different nerves to bring them to their default tensions. When further
required, even the position of the hands is specified to increase or
decrease the values.

Throughout the life of the body, as it ages or it changes shape,


nature maintains and keeps correcting the default tension values
required by each nerve. This is done by suitably changing the shape
of the fingers and hands.
Element Representation
Any living body is made of 5 distinct ELEMENTS (building blocks):
FIRE WIND
ETHER EARTH WATER
Several ancient health systems are based on the concept of the balance of
the five elements. Indian Medical science according to Ayurved and
metaphysics affirm that distortion or impairment of the 5 elements create
outer disturbance and inner sickness in the body.
The 5 fingers of the hands represent these 5 elements :
The Thumb symbolises the Fire
The Forefinger symbolises the Wind
The Middle finger symbolises the Ether
The Ring finger symbolises the Earth
The Little or Small finger symbolises the Water
Energy Conservation
Finger tip are free energy discharge points.
When the fingers are used to form Mudras, different free energy discharge
points come into contact. Prana (energy) is redirected back into the body.
They form a simple psycho-neural lock, to redirect energy, moving from
brain to fingers and back again.
The redirected energy traveling through the nerves stimulates the various
chakras. Keeping the hands on the knees stimulates the Gupta Nadi and
makes the energy start from the Mooladhara Chakra.
Mudras provides a tension on the nerves to soothe and relax them and
function at peak efficiency.
Because the Mudras work on the nerves, they are a NEURAL SCIENCE
similar to Acupressure and Acupuncture.

In Buddhism and Hinduism,

J. S. M. Ward in his book "The sign language of mysteries" identifies
those most used in Christian art (by no means limited to Christianity)

The first written mention of Mudras is found in The Bhagwad Geeta.

ADVANTAGES OF MUDRAS
Mudras can effect changes in veins, tendons, glands, sense organs.
Mudras need no prior preparation. They can be practiced as and
when necessary under all circumstances.

They act as corrective remote control switches. They bring about


quick and effective reversion of the destructive changes in the
human body.
Some Mudras can act in seconds and minutes. These can be
effectively used for first aid.
Long term practice with devotion and yogic discipline brings about
permanent changes.
The changes desired may be mental (in anger, emotional
disturbance, intelligence etc.), spiritual (in concentration, meditation
etc.) or physical (in various diseases, illnesses)
Mudras cleanse the system, calm and concentrate the mind.

Functional Factors in Mudra Therapy
BELIEF
- Have faith. It is a complimentary therapy and can be used side by side
with any therapy.
MIND
- Before starting take a few deep breaths, till the breathing is rhythmic and
the mind relaxed.
- Dhyana (Meditation) increases the efficacy of Mudras.
BODY
- Keep the body relaxed and at ease but do not pamper it.
POSTURE
- Unless specified, should be practiced with both hands.
- Unless specified, do not use pressure between the touching fingers
- Keep unused fingers reasonably straight but not rigid and as far as
possible do not move the fingers or arms while practicing mudras.
- Unless specified mudras can be done sitting or while lying down or
walking
Functional Factors in Mudra Therapy
TIME
- The best time for the Sadhana is in the mornings.
- With certain exceptions like for digestive disorders, mudras should not
be practiced for half to one hour after the meals.
- Unless specifically mentioned otherwise, mudras can be safely
practiced in 15/20 minutes sittings 2/3 times a day or single sittings of
30 / 45 minutes.
EFFECTS
- Mudras increase or decrease the elements in the body to bring them
to optimum levels.
- By joining the forepart of any finger with the forepart of the thumb, the
element increases and becomes stable.

- By joining the forepart of the thumb to the base of any finger the
element starts increasing.
- Bending any finger on the pad of the thumb and touching the base of
the thumb with the forepart of the finger, the element starts decreasing.
AATMANJALI MUDRA
A tribute to the soul. Namaste.
"I bow to the divinity within you from the divinity within me."

It is very effective at the start of Yoga or of


any activity where concentration of our
conscious mind is required.
Helps in producing humility. To be true to
ourselves.
Helps in concentrating our thoughts.
It aligns awareness (mind) of self, feelings
(heart) and actions (body).
It gives a calming effect to be able to start
any activity.

GYAN MUDRA
The Mudra of Wisdom
There is a close connection between mind
and body.
Called the "YOGIC TRANQUILISER". It is
the mudra for meditation.
The mudra is an important psycho-neural
finger lock. The palms and fingers of the
hands have many nerve root endings, which
constantly emit energy. When the finger
touches the thumb, a circuit is produced
which allows the energy that would normally
dissipate into the environment to travel back
into the body and up to the brain.
GYAN (VAIRAGYA) MUDRA (ASCETICISM)

It is excellent for students. Improves IQ,


memory.
Excellent for the mentally disturbed or
where mental development has been
hampered or stopped.
For those with a sinful nature.
Helps in insomnia, mental disorders,
tension, depression, drowsiness,
irritability.
Over a period of time, it improves the
nature, influence, charm and cordiality.
Helps break away from addictions and
intoxications.
Helps to control aphrodisiacal thoughts.
Gives peace of mind, body and soul
It is excellent for students. Improves IQ,
memory.

MAHAGYAN MUDRA
From anger comes delusion; from delusion,
loss of memory; loss of memory leads to ruin
of discrimination and from loss of
discrimination man perishes
A meditation on Muladhara Chakra - the root
charka - this mudra works on the first chakra
and helps one stay in the moment.
This meditation removes childhood traumas,
old wounds, fear and anger
It should be done three to eleven minutes

THE VAYU (wind) MUDRA


It gets rid of the wind in the stomach and body.
It helps to get rid of 51 different types of wind (Vayu)
based ailments including Gout, Paralysis or part
paralysis, Tremors etc.
A 45-minute practice, within 24 hours of the disease
striking, shows miraculous results. The Mudra can be
continued with any other cures.
Gets rid of any twisting pains in the stomach, bloating
or wind based pains in any part of the body.
Effects can be observed within 15 to 20 minutes.
Helps in Parkinson's disease (ailment of the nerves
where the patients body, head and limbs shake
uncontrollably)
CAUTION
This mudra should generally, not be continued after the
symptoms have disappeared

SHUNYA (Vacuity) MUDRA


A specific help for those hard of hearing.
For still better and faster effects it should
be complimented with Aakash Mudra.
It gives virtually instant relief in almost all
types of earaches within a period of two to
three minutes.
The mudra is very helpful in giving relief
from earaches / discomfort, nausea and
vomiting felt when driving up curving
mountain roads or while taking off or
landing in an aircraft.
CAUTION
This mudra must not be continued after hearing
has been restored as the Mudra shows a sine
wave or cyclical nature in its effects

APAN MUDRA
This Mudra purifies the body. It helps in expelling all
foreign as well as unwanted fluids from the body
and in easy secretion of any excreta.
Where urine is not passing freely, a practice of this
Mudra for 45 minutes will ensure free passage.
If there were no sweating, where it should normally
occur, this mudra will induce it.
It helps in regulating menstruation and achieving
painless discharge.
A regular practice of this Mudra for 5 to 10 minutes,
two to three times a day, starting from one month
before the due date, will help ensure easy delivery
for expectant mothers.
The Mudra is of great help in cases of Piles,
Diabetes, and disorder of the Kidneys.

THE APAN-VAYU MUDRA

MRITSANJIVANI MUDRA
This Mudra acts like an injection in arresting
a heart attack.
Regular practice of this Mudra can prevent
heart attacks and in heart patients can
prevent recurrence.
It is excellent for relief in Tacho-cardia (fast
heart beats), depression, slow heart beats,
sinking of heart, palpitations etc.
It gives all the advantages of Vayu Mudra
also and destroys wind in the stomach as
well as the body, hence, it helps in a wide
variety of headaches/wind based aches.

MEAO MUDRA
This Mudra is very effective in
regulating
Blood Pressure - high or low.
In either case, a regular practice
of this Mudra will regulate and
bring the Blood Pressure back to
normal.

MAHASHIRSHA MUDRA

The mudra provides relief from


almost all types of headaches.
It is specifically effective in
providing help against Migraine.
A regular practice of the mudra
can prove an effective cure from
Migraine headaches.

SHANKH MUDRA
It helps to remove speech defects like
stuttering and stammering.
It also helps to improve the digestive
system
The Mudra's affinity with the 'Nabhi
Chakra', affects the nervous system,
providing a beneficial effect on internal
and external health.

It also has a deep effect on voice. It
