When selecting shaft seals, the most important component to consider is the mixer shaft. Shaft movement (run-out), surface alignment and shaft smoothness are critical factors in the performance of the seal. Clean-ability and maintenance requirements will determine the appropriate seal selection. Marion Mixers certifies our shafts: Run-out less than .005 total movement in the seal journal area. Parallel to seal housing within .015 from front to back of seal housing. Smooth between 8 and 16 Ra or 320-grit.

Style E-Stuffing Box Seal

A machined, barrel housing is welded to the mixer end plate. A UHMW washer and 4 woven TFE packing seals are used. The adjustable packing gland is field tightened to accommodate packing wear. Air purge feature helps prevent migration of material along the shaft. Ideal for most applications with periodic maintenance requirements. Machined seal housing equipped with threaded air purge connection. Standard on all chopper shaft applications.

Style E - Split Seal

Machined seal housing is designed for quick disassembly and clean-out. Adjustable "finger knobs" allow maintenance without the use of tools. TFE/ synthetic or "food grade" Teflon packing materials are used. Machined seal plate is attached to the mixer end plate with no exposed cracks or crevices. Optional air purge is available to prevent migration of materials along the shaft. Ideal for sanitary applications where frequent cleaning is required. Food grade packing materials are available. Machined mounting plate creates sanitary interface with mixer.

Mechanical Seal

Seals use mechanical interference of machined parts to prevent migration of material along the shaft. Air or liquid purge options are available. Once installed and adjusted, mechanical seals require less periodic maintenance. Mechanical seals are designed to accommodate greater amounts of shaft run-out. Ideal for liquid or pressure applications. Precision machined components.

Style B - Inside/Outside Seal

Cast iron seal housings are through-bolted on either side of the mixer end plate. The housings are machined to accept either felt or woven TFE/synthetic packing. An oil lubricant port is piped to the exterior of the mixer. This rugged seal design is well suited for abrasive environments with dry materials. Single or double seal designs. Oil impregnated felt packing is compressed around shaft. Oil or grease lubricant is piped from seal housing.
