Fun-Flap Facts: Multiplication Danielle Blood, Scholastic Teaching Resources

Introduction
Welcome to Fun-Flap Facts: Multiplication, a hands-on way to help kids learn the times table! Kids spend hours creating their own fun-flaps to entertain themselves and their friends. This book includes 22 reproducible fun-flaps that feature the same interactive format that kids know and love, plus dozens and dozens of multiplication problems to help kids master the times table. Fun-flaps are ideal for learning centers or for use during transition timesin the morning, before or after lunch, at the end of the day, or for practice at home. Youll find a reproducible fun-flap for each number from 1 to 12, plus 10 additional fun-flaps that help kids review the entire times table. Each fun-flap features eight multiplication problems. Kids read and answer the problem, then lift the flap to reveal the answer as well as a fortune, math task, or fun memory clue to help them remember the multiplication fact. Youll also find several additional reproducible pages to make using fun-flaps even easier: directions for folding the fun-flaps self-checking quizzes a checklist to help kids keep track of which fun-flaps theyve mastered The engaging format and humorous illustrations encourage kids to review the times table again and again. Mastering the times table has never been so much fun!

How to Use This Book

There are many ways that multiplication fun-flaps can be used in the classroom and at home. Here are some teaching tips to get started. Make copies of the fun-flaps, store them in labeled hanging files, and place these in a learning center. After demonstrating how to fold the fun-flaps, post the folding directions nearby. (Many children know how to fold these, but the directions will guide them if questions arise.) Have each student decorate a multiplication folder. (Folders with pockets work best.) In their multiplication folders, have kids store

Fun-Flap Facts: Multiplication Danielle Blood, Scholastic Teaching Resources

their fun-flaps, along with their quizzes and checklist. Explain how to use the checklist to keep track of which fun-flaps kids have used and to record their quiz scores. Together with the class, come up with ways to use the funflaps that will promote a productive environment in the classroomfor example, keeping voices low when reading and answering questions. Introduce a new fun-flap each week. Write the number on a sheet of colored paper and decorate it. Display the number in a learning center where you have stored copies of the weekly fun-flap. Keep previous fun-flaps accessible for students who need additional practice. After students have used fun-flaps for three consecutive numbers, provide the review fun-flap for those three numbers (13, 46, 79, 1012). Once students have used the fun-flaps for each number as well as the four review fun-flaps, challenge them to review the entire times table with the fun-flaps on pages 2732. (Note: Review pages do not include multiplying by 1.) Explain that the fun-flaps feature memory clues. Some of the memory clues involve words or phrases that sound like numbers for example, 8 asked 5 over for tea. Read aloud the sentence and ask kids if they hear the answer (for tea = 40). Explain that these answers appear in bold to make them easier to find.

5 asked 8 to come over for tea.

Using the Fun-Flaps

1. Partner A holds the fun-flap in a closed position, so that the points touch. Partner A asks Partner B the question at the top of the page (or another question, such as, Which is your favorite?). 2. Partner B looks at the four choices and selects one. 3. Partner A opens and closes the fun-flap the number of times shown above the selection, ending with the fun-flap in an open position. Partner A holds the fun-flap so Partner B can view the four multiplication problems. 4. Partner B chooses a problem and solves it. Partner A lifts the flap to reveal the answer and reads aloud the message beneath the flap. 5. Partners can switch roles at any point. Practice continues until both partners have taken several turns and are familiar with all eight multiplication facts in the fun-flap.
