Safe, automatic SIMATIC WinCC shutdown for minimum plant downtime and maximum data security

If your SIMATIC WinCC operator stations crash because of a power failure, data loss is usually inevitable. Unnecessarily long plant downtimes result. In com bination with a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), ShutDown WinCC allows SIMATIC WinCC operator stations to be closed and shut down in a controlled way if the power supply fails, thus reducing plant downtimes to a minimum.

The challenge
There are many possible causes of power failures. Even if utility companies were in a position to guarantee an almost one hundred percent failsafe electricity supply, there would still be a host of unfavorable circumstances which could trigger a total failure. Excavator damage and extreme weather conditions are just two examples. The biggest weak spots are always installation work, short-circuits in the building and human error, however. Downtimes are predicted to increase even further in the next few years in the wake of the electricity markets liberalization and the ensuing cost pressures on utilities. The financial damage that results from stoppages of a component system or in the worst case the complete plant is immense. Even short production downtimes often mean completely resetting the machines in a procedure lasting hours if not days. A fully functional process control and vizualisation system is crucial for prompt resumption of production following a power failure. Special measures must therefore be taken to protect these systems against the possible consequences of sudden loss of power.

Our solution
In combination with a UPS, ShutDown WinCC allows the WinCC runtime environment to be shut down in a cont rolled way and the complete WinCC project to be closed. SIMATIC WinCC itself merely provides the option of shutting down the WinCC runtime environment manu ally. Automatic, system compatible shutdowns an essential prerequisite of using a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) are not supported by WinCC. The shutdown sequence can be influenced by means of various call settings. Our software solution interacts with any standard UPS, providing the normal UPS software allows you to start certain programs (*.exe, *.dat) automatically if a power failure is detected. The product is delivered on a CD with a license diskette and must be purchased separately for each SIMATIC WinCC server. It is easy to install thanks to the intuitive setup program and comprehensive manual.
