The Gold Rush Week 4Day 15: Buy My Goods!

(60 minutes) Objective Students will be able to identify and describe the importance of the various items needed in order to effectively find gold during the time of the Gold Rush in California. Standards (CCSS-W)1. Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. 4. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. (CCSS-RL)1. Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. 4.4 Students explain how CA became an economic and industrial power tracing the

transformation of the CA economy as well as the political and social development since the 1850s.2. Explain how the Gold Rush transformed the economy of CA including the types of products produced and consumed ISTE 2: Communication and Collaboration; ISTE 3: Research Information and Fluency Preparation In preparation for this lesson, you will need to put the class into groups of four students. Images of each of the tools you need to successfully find gold. They will be used during the lesson to review. Review techniques how to persuade others. This will be needed in order for the students to understand how to market goods and services. Materials Teacher computer Class set of computers Printer Video recording device

Guided Instruction Then, there should be direct instruction about the items miners would need to have in order to effectively find gold. Review the video about how to pan for gold. Look at each image of the tools and items you need to find gold (attached.) Discuss what each was used for and why they would be important for a miner to have. Then, you will need to talk about what it means to market or persuade a buyer to purchase their product. Once the class understands what is expected, you should circulate throughout the groups and be available to assist with any clarifying questions. Independent Activity Student groups will create a marketing campaign and verbally try to sell items to your classmates that you would need to pan or mine for gold. This will be done collaboratively in groups of 4 students. The marketing presentation campaign will be videotaped with a Flip or other digital recording device. Class will vote on the best presentation. Homework For homework this evening you should share with an adult the marketing campaign that you did with your group in class today. Make sure you use the same persuasive techniques that you used in class. Have the adult initial in your agenda that you did this. Students should also finish the unit study guide on page 69 in the Reflections Homework and Practice book (lesson three) to review the unit information.
