Speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association

Although tonight , the so-called religious issues necessarily and naturally be the main topic , but I want to emphasize at the outset that we in the choice of the year compared to see us in 1960 far more critical problems : the spread of Communist influence , which is now 90 miles away the coast of Florida festers , the humiliating treatment of our President and Vice President by those who no longer respect our power, the hungry children I saw in West Virginia, the old people who can not pay their doctor bills, the families who were forced to abandon their farms , an America with too many slums and too few schools and that is too late in the race to the moon and into space.

These are the real issues which should decide the outcome of this election campaign. And there are no religious problems, because war and hunger and ignorance and despair know no religious boundaries . But because I am a Catholic and have never been a Catholic was elected president before, the real problems were glossed over in this election campaign - possibly this was done in some areas where less responsibility than there is here on purpose. Therefore, it is obviously necessary for me again to explain , not what kind of church I believe , because that alone should be important only to me, but on what kind of America I believe. I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute, where no Catholic prelate of the President, when is he catholic, dictates how he should act , and no Protestant minister his parishioners says who to choose where no church or parochial school receives public funds or political preference , and

I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic nor Protestant nor Jewish , an America in which no public servant invited by the Pope , the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical institution instructions in terms of public policy or accepted where no religious body attempted to directly or indirectly impose its will on the general population or the public acts of its representatives , and in the freedom of religion is so indivisible that an act against one church as an act against all being treated. Because while it is a Catholic this year , against whom the finger of suspicion is directed , it was in years past, and it may one day again , a Jew - or a Quaker , or a Unitarian , or a Baptist . For example, it was the harassment of Baptist preachers in Virginia, the beige contributed to Jefferson's statute of religious freedom. Today I may be the victim, but tomorrow it may be you - until the whole fabric of our harmonious society is torn apart in a time of great national peril. And finally, I believe in an America where religious intolerance will someday end , where all men and all churches are treated equally , where everyone has the same right to attend the church of his choice or to stay away from her, where there is no Catholic or anti-Catholic voice in which Catholics, Protestants and Jews distancing no block voting of any kind and to both lay and also to Pastor level of an attitude of disdain and division which so often damaged their work in the past has , and instead promote the American ideal of brotherhood. This is the America in which I believe . And it represents the kind of Presidency in which I believe : a large office that is not humbled by making it the instrument of any one religious group that is not clouded by members of any religious group access will be denied arbitrarily . I believe in a president whose religious views are his own private affair , which he still can impose the nation as a precondition for this office neither the nation imposes . A president who worked on the undermining of guaranteed in the First Amendment of the Constitution, freedom of religion, not to find my approval .

And even those who are working , Article VI of the Constitution - even if indirectly - to undermine , by requiring a religious test for the office , can not find my approval . If they do not agree with this security mechanism , they should be open to work on repealing it. I want a top official whose public acts are all groups compared to responsibly and no group versus obliged to who can attend any ceremony , every service and every dinner , if this is appropriate for his office , one whose fulfillment of his Presidential oath any restrictions or conditions of any religious oaths , rituals or obligations subject . This is the America that I believe in , and that's the America for which I have fought in the South Pacific , and the Americas, for my brother died in Europe. At that time, no one speculated that we would have a " divided loyalty ," that we " did not believe in liberty" or that we belonged to a disloyal group that " freedoms for which our forefathers died " betrayed the . And indeed, our forefathers died for exactly this America when they fled here to escape religious tests in the form of oaths , the members of less favored churches denied access to offices, as they for the Constitution , the Bill of Rights and the Virginia statute of religious freedom and fought as they fought at the shrine I visited today , the Alamo . For side by side with Bowie and Crockett died McCafferty and Bailey and Carey. But no one knows whether they were Catholic or not, because at the Alamo , there was no religious test . I ask you tonight to follow this tradition and to judge me based on my accomplishments of 14 years in Congress, on the basis of my declared stand point against an ambassador to the Vatican , against unconstitutional grants for church schools and the boycott of the public schools ( the I myself attended ) , rather than to judge me based on these pamphlets and publications we all know and where carefully selected quotes Catholic leaders were taken out of context and usually originating from other countries regularly from other centuries and of course always the statement the American bishops skip in 1948 , in which the

I consider these other quotations in terms of my public acts not for binding. Why should you do it ? Let's say with regard to other countries , that I am strongly opposed to the government of any religious group , whether it is Catholic or Protestant , used to force the free exercise of other religions , to prohibit or prosecute me , however . And I hope that you and I refuse such nations , the Protestants , the Office of the President, as well as those who would deprive Catholics condemn with the same passion . And instead of the misdeeds to quote that are different from those I quote rather the merits of the Catholic Church in nations such as Ireland and France and the independence of statesmen as Adenauer and De Gaulle . But let me stress again that these are my views . Contrary to what is often read in the newspapers , I am not the Catholic presidential candidate. I am the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party , who happens to be a Catholic. I speak in public affairs not for my church , and the church does not speak for me. What will be the President also submitted to me for a problem - birth control , divorce, censorship , gambling or any other subject - I will make my decision in accordance with these views , in accordance with what me showing my conscience as a national interest , and without regard to religious pressure or regulations meet from the outside. And no power or threat of punishment could cause me to decide otherwise. But should it ever come so far - and I will not allow such a conflict is possible even in the slightest - in which my office requires me either against my conscience or against the national interest to offend , then I would from my Official withdraw , and I hope every conscientious public servant would do the same. But I do not intend to apologize to my critics , whether they are Catholic or Protestant faith now for my views , just as I intend to renounce my views or my church in order to win this election .

texas church - http://www.sjd.org/ If I was to lose due to the real issues , I will again take my seat in the Senate and be satisfied that I did my best , and have been assessed fairly . But if this election is decided on the basis that 40 million Americans have lost the chance for the presidency on the day of their baptism , then the whole nation will be the loser in the eyes of Catholics and non - Catholics around the world in the eyes of history and in the eyes of our own people . If I should, however, win the election, I will devote every effort of mind and heart fulfilling my oath as president, who, I might add, is virtually identical to the oath which I have sworn in Congress 14 years ago. Because I can without reservation " solemnly swear that I will execute the office of President of the United States faithfully observe the Constitution and its best efforts to protect and defend , so help me God.
