ABSTRACT

SOSIODEMOGRAPHIC AND CLINICAL CHARACTERISTIC OF EPILEPSY PATIENTS WITH TONIC-CLONIC SEIZURE: Descriptive Observasional Study on Pediatric Outpatient at Polyclinic of Pediatric Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang During 2007-2012
(M. Febriandi Djunaidi, FK Unsri, 2014, 75 pages) Background: Epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizure is the most common type of epilepsy that often occur in children. Impaired growth and development are the most important problems in epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizures. Objective: To identify characteristics of epilepsy patients with tonic-clonic seizures in children by sociodemographic and clinical findings at Polyclinic of Pediatric Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang from 2007-2012. Methods: Descriptive observational study with cross sectional approach. Samples were taken from the medical records of children with epilepsy at Polyclinic of Pediatric Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang period 1 January 2007-31 December 2010. Results: From the 78 samples, the largest age group in children with epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizures is age group of 6-15 years which consists of 38 children (48.7%). Males are 46 (59%) and women are 32 (41%). Considerable Socioeconomic group consist of 43 children, and it is quite many (55.1%) and from low socioeconomical consists of total 35 children (44.9%). From the 69 samples, seizure duration less than15 minutes were found in 60 children (87%) and seizure duration more than 15 minutes were 9 children (13%). From the 71 samples, the incident of seizures that never re-occur is found in 21 children (29.6%) and more than one time per year is found in 50 children (70.4%) . From the 67 samples, the idiopathic etiology is found in 37 children (55.2%), symptomatic case is found in 27 children (40.3%), and cryptogenic case is found in 3 children (4.5%). From the 63 samples, the cases with no family history of epilepsy is found in 59 children (93.7%) and the case with a family history of epilepsy is found in 4 children (6.3%). From the 69 samples, patient with very poor nutritional status consists of 8 children (11.6%), patient with poor nutrition consists of 3 children (4.3%), patient with good nutrition consists of 42 children (60.9%), patient with over nutrition consists of 12 children (17.4%), and patient with obesity consists of 4 children (5.8%). From the 71 samples, patients with monotherapy consists of 65 cases (91.5%) and polytherapy consists of 6 cases (8.4%). From the 69 samples, length of therapy is less than 2 years consists of 42 children (60.9%) and more than 2 years consists of 27 cases (39.1%). Conclusions: Epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizure is the most common type of epilepsy that often occur in children between 6-15 years age group, and the most often case are found in men, patient with considerable Socioeconomic life , patient with seizure duration less than 15 minutes, patient with re-occurance case 1 time per year, patient with idiopathic etiology, patient with no history of epilepsy in the family, patient with good nutritional status, patient with valproic acid monotherapy, and patient with duration of therapy less than 2 years.
