The verb "be" is the most important verb to learn in English. It's also the most complicated. In the present tense it has three forms: am, is, are. In the past tense, it has two forms: was and were. The verb "be" is also used to make the passive voice.

Gostaria de falar um pouco do famoso dilema do ser ou no ser, mas esquecendo um pouco as questes existenciais levantadas por Shakespeare. Quando comeamos a aprender ingls um dos primeiros tpicos gramaticais inevitavelmente o famoso verbo to be e como em portugus ele tem mais de uma traduo nem sempre esse assunto bsico to bsico assim. Em portugus temos dois verbos, o ser e o estar, que correspondem ao verbo to be do ingls e isso pode muitas vezes gerar confuso. Vejamos alguns exemplos: I am Brazilian Eu sou brasileira. I am tired Eu estou cansada. H ainda a questo da forma de se falar a idade em portugus e em ingls. Em portugus ns temos uma idade: Eu tenho trinta anos. Em ingls ns somos uma idade, usando dessa forma o verbo to be. I am thirty years old. Essa pode parecer uma questo muito bsica mas na minha experincia como professora de alunos brasileiros j pude observar que muitas vezes alunos com ingls de nvel bom, com alguma fluncia ainda fazem o erro tpico de dizer: I have thirty years old. E R R A D O Outro erro comum que ocorre principalmente como o verbo to be us-lo sem o sujeito como fazemos em portugus, por exemplo: Est sol. muitas vezes ouvi brasileiros dizendo Is sunny, traduzindo ao p da letra, mas em ingls nunca temos uma frase sem sujeito e quando no h um sujeito definido usamos o it. Ento o certo seramos dizer: It is sunny. Esses so erros comuns, mas que podem, numa situao de entrevista de emprego, por exemplo, botar por gua abaixo tudo de bom que o entrevistado possa ter dito anteriormente. Ento, ateno ao uso do verbo to be e d uma polida no seu ingls.
