Cuddalore has al"ays been classified as a multi#ha$ard prone district. Cyclones and floods ha%e "rea&ed ha%oc in the District se%eral times in the past fe" centuries. The District also falls "ithin the $one#' "ith respect to earth(ua&es. A part of the problem o"es its enesis to the location of the district. The District has a lon coastline of )*.) +M. Therefore the district is %ulnerable to the cyclonic depressions and the resultant rains "hich causes floods ,i&e the rest of the shore of the bay of Ben al . Cuddalore had been prone to cyclone. The hurricane of April -',-*./ "rec&ed three %essels bet"een Cuddalore and pondicherry .Se%en hundred and fifty men lost their li%es. A cyclone in December -*01 caused dama e to the si2 ships in the 3ondicherry road. There "ere %iolent storms on the coast in -*)4. -*5.. -*/). -515. -541. -5)-. -5.1. -5.4.-5)'. -5*- and -5*.. In the storm of -5)' se%en %essels "ere "rec&ed bet"een Cuddalore and 3ortno%o There "ere hi h floods in the 6adilam in 1864 and in 3ennayar in 1874. 7f these floods the flood of -55. "as the "orst. In -55., ri%ers 3ennayar and 6adilam "ere united due to hea%y flood. Their "aters s"ept throu h the to"n for t"enty four hours. 8The current tore across the plain round "hich the offices stand to a depth of fi%e feet, and a youth narro"ly escaped dro"nin close to the 7ld time un there. Thus the floods "ere the source of de#urbani$ation of Cuddalore in the -/th century In the year 411. the District "itnessed a se%ere drou ht in may, floods in 7ctober and then in December 9the tsunami. The e2cessi%e rainfall and unprecedented floods durin 411) left a trail of de%astation.
