Assignment/Activity Title Dada Performance Skill Media, Group Dynamics, Public Performance

Year Freshman Portfolio Category Social Awareness

For our Dada performance, we were required to create a performance containing many characteristics of the Dada movement. The performance was supposed to be about an important current issue. My group chose gun violence. We focused on the mass shootings that have been going on in the news lately. We noticed that very similar instances had occurred in the past couple years. From the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, to the one at the Aurora movie theater, to Sandy Hook, and finally to the Navy Yard shooting only a month before the project, there have been so many deaths in this country as a result of these mass shootings. Plus, a few weeks after our performance, there was another shooting, this one at the Los Angeles airport. This trend of violence can be quite scary to a young generation exposed to so much news through the internet and other sources. The goal of our performance was to put all the sadness together in a two minute performance. We made a video to represent the four shootings we chose to cover. Each segment would start with a black screen with the date of the shooting and intense music in the background. This would be followed by pictures of various newspaper headlines about the incident with media coverage in the background. Then it would move on to the next segment, with the next date appearing on the screen. For the performance aspect, the three other group members and I dressed in black and wore hoodies. We would all begin by walking around dejectedly to represent the American people. During this time one person would put on their hood. When the next date came on screen, this person would be the shooter, symbolizing that anyone could be the next person to commit such a terrible crime, and we never know who it will be. As the music plays, the other people freeze and this person shoots imaginary people around the room, when the music stops, the person would shoot themself and fall to the ground. Although many of the shooters in our examples didnt kill themselves, in our performance they also represented the people who died in that shooting. When the news coverage comes on, the other people walk around, melancholy American citizens, hearing the news, but doing nothing as the next person dons their hood. This would continue until the video was over and we all lay on the floor, dead, signifying the lives we have lost and will continue to lose if nothing is done to change it. Our group worked well together and we came out with an amazing final product although it took a lot of time to make sure we looked serious the whole time and got the shooting down so that it wouldnt look comical. With something so serious, you just want to laugh to relieve yourself of the sadness, but we didnt want to offer relief to the audience, we wanted them to understand. Even in creating the video, it had a huge impact on me, and made me feel depressed as I realized just how bad it was. As I listened to the media coverage over and over, editing the clips so they would fit together well and wouldnt be choppy, I felt truly disheartened.
