Amos

1,1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 1,2 And he said: the !"# roareth from $ion, and uttereth %is &oice from Jerusalem' and the (astures of the she(herds shall mourn, and the to( of )armel shall wither. {P} 1,3 *or thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of #amascus, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because they ha&e threshed +ilead with sledges of iron. 1,4 ,o will I send a fire into the house of %azael, and it shall de&our the (alaces of -en.hadad' 1,5 And I will break the bar of #amascus, and cut off the inhabitant from -ikath.A&en, and him that holdeth the sce(tre from -eth.eden' and the (eo(le of Aram shall go into ca(ti&ity unto /ir, saith the !"#. {P} 1,6 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of +aza, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because they carried away ca(ti&e a whole ca(ti&ity, to deli&er them u( to 0dom. 1,7 ,o will I send a fire on the wall of +aza, and it shall de&our the (alaces thereof' 1,8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sce(tre from Ashkelon' and I will turn 1y hand against 0kron, and the remnant of the 2hilistines shall (erish, saith the ord +!#. {P} 1,9 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of Tyre, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because they deli&ered u( a whole ca(ti&ity to 0dom, and remembered not the brotherly co&enant. 1,10 ,o will I send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it shall de&our the (alaces thereof. {P} 1,11 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of 0dom, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because he did (ursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all (ity, and his anger did tear (er(etually, and he ke(t his wrath for e&er. 1,12 ,o will I send a fire u(on Teman, and it shall de&our the (alaces of -ozrah. {P} 1,13 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because they ha&e ri((ed u( the women with child of +ilead, that they might enlarge their border. 1,14 ,o will I kindle a fire in the wall of "abbah, and it shall de&our the (alaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tem(est in the day of the whirlwind' 1,15 And their king shall go into ca(ti&ity, he and his (rinces together, saith the !"#. {P} 2,1 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of 1oab, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because he burned the bones of the king of 0dom into lime. 2,2 ,o will I send a fire u(on 1oab, and it shall de&our the (alaces of /erioth' and 1oab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the horn' 2,3 And I will cut off the 3udge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the (rinces thereof with him, saith the !"#. {P}

2,4 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of Judah, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because they ha&e re3ected the law of the !"#, and ha&e not ke(t %is statutes, and their lies ha&e caused them to err, after which their fathers did walk. 2,5 ,o will I send a fire u(on Judah, and it shall de&our the (alaces of Jerusalem. {P} 2,6 Thus saith the !"#: *or three transgressions of Israel, yea, for four, I will not re&erse it: because they sell the righteous for sil&er, and the needy for a (air of shoes' 2,7 That (ant after the dust of the earth on the head of the (oor, and turn aside the way of the humble' and a man and his father go unto the same maid, to (rofane 1y holy name' 2,8 And they lay themsel&es down beside e&ery altar u(on clothes taken in (ledge, and in the house of their +od they drink the wine of them that ha&e been fined. 2,9 4et destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks' yet I destroyed his fruit from abo&e, and his roots from beneath. 2,10 Also I brought you u( out of the land of 0gy(t, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to (ossess the land of the Amorites. 2,11 And I raised u( of your sons for (ro(hets, and of your young men for 5azirites. Is it not e&en thus, ! ye children of Israel6 saith the !"#. 2,12 -ut ye ga&e the 5azirites wine to drink' and commanded the (ro(hets, saying: 72ro(hesy not.7 2,13 -ehold, I will make it creak under you, as a cart creaketh that is full of shea&es. 2,14 And flight shall fail the swift, and the strong shall not e8ert his strength, neither shall the mighty deli&er himself' 2,15 5either shall he stand that handleth the bow' and he that is swift of foot shall not deli&er himself' neither shall he that rideth the horse deli&er himself' 2,16 And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the !"#. {P} 3,1 %ear this word that the !"# hath s(oken against you, ! children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought u( out of the land of 0gy(t, saying: 3,2 4ou only ha&e I known of all the families of the earth' therefore I will &isit u(on you all your iniquities. 3,3 9ill two walk together, e8ce(t they ha&e agreed6 3,4 9ill a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no (rey6 9ill a young lion gi&e forth his &oice out of his den, if he ha&e taken nothing6 3,5 9ill a bird fall in a snare u(on the earth, where there is no lure for it6 9ill a snare s(ring u( from the ground, and ha&e taken nothing at all6 3,6 ,hall the horn be blown in a city, and the (eo(le not tremble6 ,hall e&il befall a city, and the !"# hath not done it6 3,7 *or the ord +!# will do nothing, but %e re&ealeth %is counsel unto %is ser&ants the (ro(hets. 3,8 The lion hath roared, who will not fear6 The ord +!# hath s(oken, who can but (ro(hesy6 3,9 2roclaim it u(on the (alaces at Ashdod, and u(on the (alaces in the land of 0gy(t, and say: 7Assemble yoursel&es u(on the mountains of ,amaria, and behold the great confusions therein, and the o((ressions in the midst thereof.7 3,10 *or they know not to do right, saith the !"#, who store u( &iolence and robbery in their (alaces. {P} 3,11 Therefore thus saith the ord +!#: An ad&ersary, e&en round about the land: And he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy (alaces shall be s(oiled. 3,12 Thus saith the !"#: As the she(herd rescueth out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a (iece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel that dwell in ,amaria esca(e with the corner of a couch, and the leg of a bed. 3,13 %ear ye, and testify against the house of Jacob, saith the ord +!#, the +od of hosts. 3,14 *or in the day that I shall &isit the transgressions of

Israel u(on him, I will also (unish the altars of -eth.el, and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. 3,15 And I will smite the winter.house with the summer. house' and the houses of i&ory shall (erish, and the great houses shall ha&e an end, saith the !"#. {S} 4,1 %ear this word, ye kine of -ashan, that are in the mountain of ,amaria, that o((ress the (oor, that crush the needy, that say unto their lords: 7-ring, that we may feast.7 4,2 The ord +!# hath sworn by %is holiness: o, surely the days shall come u(on you, that ye shall be taken away with hooks, and your residue with fish. hooks. 4,3 And ye shall go out at the breaches, e&ery one straight before her' and ye shall be cast into %armon, saith the !"#. 4,4 )ome to -eth.el, and transgress, to +ilgal, and multi(ly transgression' and bring your sacrifices in the morning, and your tithes after three days' 4,5 And offer a sacrifice of thanksgi&ing of that which is lea&ened, and (roclaim freewill.offerings and (ublish them' for so ye lo&e to do, ! ye children of Israel, saith the ord +!#. 4,6 And I also ha&e gi&en you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your (laces' yet ha&e ye not returned unto 1e, saith the !"#. 4,7 And I also ha&e withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the har&est' and I caused it to rain u(on one city, and caused it not to rain u(on another city' one (iece was rained u(on, and the (iece whereu(on it rained not withered. 4,8 ,o two or three cities wandered unto one city to drink water, and were not satisfied' yet ha&e ye not returned unto 1e, saith the !"#. 4,9 I ha&e smitten you with blasting and mildew' the multitude of your gardens and your &ineyards and your fig.trees and your oli&e.trees hath the (almer.worm de&oured' yet ha&e ye not returned unto 1e, saith the !"#. {S} 4,10 I ha&e sent among you the (estilence in the way of 0gy(t' your young men ha&e I slain with the sword, and ha&e carried away your horses' and I ha&e made the stench of your cam( to come u( e&en into your nostrils' yet ha&e ye not returned unto 1e, saith the !"#. 4,11 I ha&e o&erthrown some of you, as +od o&erthrew ,odom and +omorrah, and ye were as a brand (lucked out of the burning' yet ha&e ye not returned unto 1e, saith the !"#. 4,12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, ! Israel' because I will do this unto thee, (re(are to meet thy +od, ! Israel. 4,13 *or, lo, %e that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth u(on the high (laces of the earth' the !"#, the +od of hosts, is %is name. {P} 5,1 %ear ye this word which I take u( for a lamentation o&er you, ! house of Israel: 5,2 The &irgin of Israel is fallen, she shall no more rise' she is cast down u(on her land, there is none to raise her u(. 5,3 *or thus saith the ord +!#: The city that went forth a thousand shall ha&e a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall ha&e ten left, of the house of Israel. 5,4 *or thus saith the !"# unto the house of Israel: ,eek ye 1e, and li&e' 5,5 -ut seek not -eth.el, nor enter into +ilgal, and (ass not to -eer.sheba' for +ilgal shall surely go into ca(ti&ity, and -eth.el shall come to nought. 5,6 ,eek the !"#, and li&e..lest %e break out like fire in the house of Jose(h, and it de&our, and there be none to quench it in -ethel.. 5,7 4e who turn 3udgment to wormwood, and cast righteousness to the ground' 5,8 %im that maketh the 2leiades and !rion, and bringeth on the shadow of death in the morning, and darkeneth the day into night' that calleth for the waters of the sea, and (oureth them out u(on the face of the earth' the !"# is %is name' 5,9 That causeth destruction to flash u(on the strong, so that destruction cometh u(on the fortress. 5,10 They hate him that re(ro&eth in the gate, and they abhor him that

s(eaketh u(rightly. 5,11 Therefore, because ye tram(le u(on the (oor, and take from him e8actions of wheat' ye ha&e built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them, ye ha&e (lanted (leasant &ineyards, but ye shall not drink wine thereof. 5,12 *or I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins' ye that afflict the 3ust, that take a ransom, and that turn aside the needy in the gate. 5,13 Therefore the (rudent doth kee( silence in such a time' for it is an e&il time. 5,14 ,eek good, and not e&il, that ye may li&e' and so the !"#, the +od of hosts, will be with you, as ye say. 5,15 %ate the e&il, and lo&e the good, and establish 3ustice in the gate' it may be that the !"#, the +od of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Jose(h. {S} 5,16 Therefore thus saith the !"#, the +od of hosts, the ord: amentation shall be in all the broad (laces, and they shall say in all the streets: 7Alas: alas:7 and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and (roclaim lamentation to such as are skilful of wailing. 5,17 And in all &ineyards shall be lamentation' for I will (ass through the midst of thee, saith the !"#. {P} 5,18 9oe unto you that desire the day of the !"#: 9herefore would ye ha&e the day of the !"#6 It is darkness, and not light. 5,19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him' and went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a ser(ent bit him. 5,20 ,hall not the day of the !"# be darkness, and not light6 0&en &ery dark, and no brightness in it6 5,21 I hate, I des(ise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies. 5,22 4ea, though ye offer me burnt.offerings and your meal. offerings, I will not acce(t them' neither will I regard the (eace.offerings of your fat beasts. 5,23 Take thou away from 1e the noise of thy songs' and let 1e not hear the melody of thy (salteries. 5,24 -ut let 3ustice well u( as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. 5,25 #id ye bring unto 1e sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, ! house of Israel6 5,26 ,o shall ye take u( ,iccuth your king and )hiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yoursel&es. 5,27 Therefore will I cause you to go into ca(ti&ity beyond #amascus, saith %e, whose name is the !"# +od of hosts. {P} 6,1 9oe to them that are at ease in $ion, and to them that are secure in the mountain of ,amaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come: 6,2 2ass ye unto )alneh, and see, and from thence go ye to %amath the great' then go down to +ath of the 2hilistines' are they better than these kingdoms6 or is their border greater than your border6 6,3 4e that (ut far away the e&il day, and cause the seat of &iolence to come near' 6,4 That lie u(on beds of i&ory, and stretch themsel&es u(on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the cal&es out of the midst of the stall' 6,5 That thrum on the (saltery, that de&ise for themsel&es instruments of music, like #a&id' 6,6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themsel&es with the chief ointments' but they are not grie&ed for the hurt of Jose(h. 6,7 Therefore now shall they go ca(ti&e at the head of them that go ca(ti&e, and the re&elry of them that stretched themsel&es shall (ass away. 6,8 The ord +!# hath sworn by %imself, saith the !"#, the +od of hosts: I abhor the (ride of Jacob, and hate his (alaces' and I will deli&er u( the city with all that is therein. 6,9 And it shall come to (ass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die. 6,10 And when a man7s uncle shall take him u(, e&en he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is in the innermost (arts

of the house: 7Is there yet any with thee67 and he shall say: 75o7' then shall he say: 7%old thy (eace' for we must not make mention of the name of the !"#.7 {S} 6,11 *or, behold, the !"# commandeth, and the great house shall be smitten into s(linters, and the little house into chi(s. 6,12 #o horses run u(on the rocks6 #oth one (low there with o8en6 that ye ha&e turned 3ustice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood' 6,13 4e that re3oice in a thing of nought, that say: 7%a&e we not taken to us horns by our own strength67 6,14 *or, behold, I will raise u( against you a nation, ! house of Israel, saith the !"#, the +od of hosts' and they shall afflict you from the entrance of %amath unto the -rook of the Arabah. {P} 7,1 Thus the ord +!# showed me' and, behold, %e formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting u( of the latter growth' and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king7s mowings. 7,2 And if it had come to (ass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land..so I said: ! ord +!#, forgi&e, I beseech Thee' how shall Jacob stand6 for he is small. 7,3 The !"# re(ented concerning this' 7It shall not be7, saith the !"#. 7,4 Thus the ord +!# showed me' and, behold, the ord +!# called to contend by fire' and it de&oured the great dee(, and would ha&e eaten u( the land. 7,5 Then said I: ! ord +!#, cease, I beseech Thee' how shall Jacob stand6 for he is small. 7,6 The !"# re(ented concerning this' 7This also shall not be7, saith the ord +!#. {P} 7,7 Thus %e showed me' and, behold, the ord stood beside a wall made by a (lumbline, with a (lumbline in %is hand. 7,8 And the !"# said unto me: 7Amos, what seest thou67 And I said: 7A (lumbline.7 Then said the ord: -ehold, I will set a (lumbline in the midst of 1y (eo(le Israel' I will not again (ardon them any more' 7,9 And the high (laces of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste' and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. {S} 7,10 Then Amaziah the (riest of -eth. el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying: 7Amos hath cons(ired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel' the land is not able to bear all his words. 7,11 *or thus Amos saith: Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away ca(ti&e out of his land.7 {S} 7,12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos: 7! thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and (ro(hesy there' 7,13 but (ro(hesy not again any more at -eth.el, for it is the king7s sanctuary, and it is a royal house.7 7,14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah: 7I was no (ro(het, neither was I a (ro(het7s son' but I was a herdman, and a dresser of sycamore.trees' 7,15 and the !"# took me from following the flock, and the !"# said unto me: +o, (ro(hesy unto 1y (eo(le Israel. 7,16 5ow therefore hear thou the word of the !"#: Thou sayest: 2ro(hesy not against Israel, and (reach not against the house of Isaac' 7,17 Therefore thus saith the !"#: Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be di&ided by line' and thou thyself shalt die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely be led away ca(ti&e out of his land.7 {P} 8,1 Thus the ord +!# showed me' and behold a basket of summer fruit. 8,2 And %e said: 7Amos, what seest thou67 And I said: 7A basket of summer fruit.7 Then said the !"# unto me: The end is come u(on 1y (eo(le Israel' I will not again (ardon them any more. 8,3 And the songs of the (alace shall be wailings in that day, saith the ord +!#' the dead bodies shall be many' in e&ery (lace silence shall be cast. {P}

8,4 %ear this, ! ye that would swallow the needy, and destroy the (oor of the land, 8,5 ,aying: 79hen will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain6 and the sabbath, that we may set forth corn6 making the e(hah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances of deceit' 8,6 That we may buy the (oor for sil&er, and the needy for a (air of shoes, and sell the refuse of the corn67 8,7 The !"# hath sworn by the (ride of Jacob: ,urely I will ne&er forget any of their works. 8,8 ,hall not the land tremble for this, and e&ery one mourn that dwelleth therein6 4ea, it shall rise u( wholly like the "i&er' and it shall be troubled and sink again, like the "i&er of 0gy(t. {P} 8,9 And it shall come to (ass in that day, saith the ord +!#, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. 8,10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation' and I will bring u( sackcloth u(on all loins, and baldness u(on e&ery head' and I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day. {P} 8,11 -ehold, the days come, saith the ord +!#, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the !"#. 8,12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north e&en to the east' they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the !"#, and shall not find it. 8,13 In that day shall the fair &irgins and the young men faint for thirst. 8,14 They that swear by the sin of ,amaria, and say: 7As thy +od, ! #an, li&eth7' and: 7As the way of -eer.sheba li&eth7' e&en they shall fall, and ne&er rise u( again. {S} 9,1 I saw the ord standing beside the altar' and %e said: ,mite the ca(itals, that the (osts may shake' and break them in (ieces on the head of all of them' and I will slay the residue of them with the sword' there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them esca(e. 9,2 Though they dig into the nether. world, thence shall 1y hand take them' and though they climb u( to hea&en, thence will I bring them down. 9,3 And though they hide themsel&es in the to( of )armel, I will search and take them out thence' and though they be hid from 1y sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the ser(ent, and he shall bite them. 9,4 And though they go into ca(ti&ity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them' and I will set 1ine eyes u(on them for e&il, and not for good. 9,5 *or the ord, the +!# of hosts, is %e that toucheth the land and it melteth, and all that dwell therein mourn' and it riseth u( wholly like the "i&er, and sinketh again, like the "i&er of 0gy(t' 9,6 It is %e that buildeth %is u((er chambers in the hea&en, and hath founded %is &ault u(on the earth' %e that calleth for the waters of the sea, and (oureth them out u(on the face of the earth' The !"# is %is name. 9,7 Are ye not as the children of the 0thio(ians unto 1e, ! children of Israel6 saith the !"#. %a&e not I brought u( Israel out of the land of 0gy(t, and the 2hilistines from )a(htor, and Aram from /ir6 9,8 -ehold, the eyes of the ord +!# are u(on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth' sa&ing that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the !"#. 9,9 *or, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, like as corn is sifted in a sie&e, yet shall not the least grain fall u(on the earth. 9,10 All the sinners of 1y (eo(le shall die by the sword, that say: 7The e&il shall not o&ertake nor confront us.7 9,11 In that day will I raise u( the tabernacle of #a&id that is fallen, and close u( the breaches thereof, and I will raise u( his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old' 9,12

That they may (ossess the remnant of 0dom, and all the nations, u(on whom 1y name is called, saith the !"# that doeth this. {P} 9,13 -ehold, the days come, saith the !"#, that the (lowman shall o&ertake the rea(er, and the treader of gra(es him that soweth seed' and the mountains shall dro( sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. 9,14 And I will turn the ca(ti&ity of 1y (eo(le Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them' and they shall (lant &ineyards, and drink the wine thereof' they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. 9,15 And I will (lant them u(on their land, and they shall no more be (lucked u( out of their land which I ha&e gi&en them, saith the !"# thy +od. {P}
