Study
This project is the second part of the study of childcare information practices. The first half the study garnered
the “official story” of how information is managed by the childcare. Our team’s concern is to now get the ‘other side of
the story’ by talking to parents. What are their concerns about keeping their child’s information secure? How aware are
they of the current practices at the childcare? Are they satisfied with these? What does it mean for them to keep their
child’s information secure? Interviewing parents in conjunction with prior research will provide insight to these
questions and more. The purpose of this research is to start investigating how personal information is accessed,
documented, and stored in medical-like settings. The goal is to develop an understanding from the interviews that will
better inform the design and study of personal health records.
Method
The project involves interviewing approximately 20 parents who have their child(ren) current enrolled in a local
childcare using an interview protocol already developed. Each interviewee will be reimbursed $10.00 for 20-30 minutes
of time. After transcribing the interviews and conceptualizing the content of the interviews a report will be produced.
Timeline
The main parts of the project are doing interviews, transcriptions, and the corresponding data analysis of these
interviews. Our plan is to divide the remaining 10 weeks into: two weeks for interview, five weeks for transcription, two
weeks for data analysis, two weeks for the reports, and the remaining time for preparing for the in-class presentation.
Deliverable
A detailed report covering the interviews and our findings will be submitted. However, we will have the
transcripts and initial data analysis reports as intermediate outputs during the project.
