BASIC MATHEMATICS (SMART STATISTICS)/2013

3.0 INTRODUCTION
Statistics is the science of data collection, organization, and interpretation. The data is often numerical but may take other forms including relationships between entities. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. The purpose is to obtain some overall understanding of group characteristics.Statistics is considered by some to be a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data, while others consider it a branch of mathematics concerned with collecting and interpreting data. Because of its empirical roots and its focus on applications, statistics is usually considered to be a distinct mathematical science rather than a branch of mathematics. Statisticians improve the quality of data with the design of experiments and survey sampling. Statistics also provides tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models. Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, government, and business. People in varied occupations use statistics. Health professionals use statistical methods to determine whether a specific drug or procedure is useful in the treatment of medical problems. Weather forecasters use statistics to more accurately predict the weather. Engineers use statistics to benchmark standards for product safety and quality. Scientists employ statistical methods to design effective experiments. Economists apply statistical techniques in predicting future economic trends.Sports recruiters use statistics to check out potential athletes. Sports teams also use statistics to prepare for upcoming opponents. They look to see which players on the opposing teams are doing well at that time. They also use statistics to decide which players are doing well and they try to predict which players will bring the best results for the game. The people who pick out merchandise for retail stores also use statistics. They look to find out what styles and colours sold the best in previous seasons and then they decide what to buy. Police officers also use statistics in several ways. The first way is to find out what intersections have the highest accident rate and then they are able to watch those intersections and reduce the number of accidents. They also study the crime rates in different neighbourhoods to show the need for additional police force. In this survey, we had survey about the reading habits among students of PPISMP 3A,3B and 3C in Institut Pendidikan Guru, Kampus Bahasa Melayu .

4.0 OBJECTIVE
Objective for carrying out the survery : i) To identify the purposes of reading habits among students of IPGKBM PPISMP Semester 3 ii) To investigate the reading habits among students of PPISMP Semester 3 in IPGKBM iii) To analysis spending money for buy book among students of PPISMP Semester 3 in IPGKBM Survey Question :1. What is the purpose students are interesting in reading books? 2. What kind of books are reading by students of PPISMP Semester 3 in IPGKBM ? 3. How much student can spend money to buy book?

Reason Choosing :We choose this topic because we want to know how many of the students of PPISMP semester 3A,3B and 3C in Institut Pendidikan Guru, Kampus Bahasa Melayu in reading book. Mostly students have to read book to improve their are interest

knowledgement.

Reading helps students become in interesting person and develops their imagination. Because of that, we do survery to impress students to more read the book. besides that, we want to know how many people choose the right books for their studies. Reading enlightens the mind, makes the intellect sharper and makes an individual travel far without motion (Braunger &Lewis, 2006). Generally speaking, reading has been accepted as an interactive process, a communication process, an active process and a meaning inducing process. Reading is not just about printed matter, but about the ability to interpret anything that is intended to convey a message or that which is to enable communication. Reading can be said to be the bedrock of most forms of learning activities culminating in literacy. One of the most important factors in education is ability to read, understand and critically apprehend the text (Hetting & Knapp,2001). To be capable of doing these students must develop their reading habits on daily basis. TARGET OF GROUP The target of group 30 students from PPISMP Semester 3.

8.0 CONCLUSION
Based on the survey, there are kinds of responses given by the respondents. These varying patterns made our data more interesting to be interpret and thus attract the people to see the data shown. Overall, based on the survey, we stand on our foot that the reading habits among students of PPISMP sem 3 in IPGKBM that we can see more female students interest in reading books compared to the male students.

At the same time, we found that mostly female students are give respond while boys respond are so less. Total figure of female student is 77% among 30 students. The figure of male students is 23 % among 30 students. Reading habit is helps students become in interesting person and develops their imagination. Because of that, we do survery to impress students to more read the book. Besides that, we want to know how many people choose the right books for their studies. The Malaysian Goverment target to have Malaysians read at least 10 books yearly from 2010. Many afforts have been done so that the objective is achieved.

Based on our first question , student give respond that reason or purpose their reading books. First fall, most of them choose their purpose of reading book is develop

knowledgement and pleasure and enjoyment is 36.6 %. Reading is the act or practice of a person who reads, where as a reading habit means the regularity on which we read. It could be anything from magazines, novels, comics, newspapers or even our textbooks. As Malaysians, we are living in a fast-paced country, trying to keep up with the current events of the world in this new-age technology where we can get absolutely anything with just a single-click of a mouse, be it information, accessories, gadgets, in a blink of an eye and I mean it literally. Previous past times such as reading has become sort of an old-fashioned ritual. Therefore, our purpose in putting up this information is to discuss ways of

encouraging the reading habit among Malaysians students.

According our second question is genre of books are reading by student of PPISMP sem 3 in IPGKBM. Once we do survey , most of male students like to read genre of fiction and genre of others book mostly read by female students. For genre of fiction is 33.33 % , for genre of non- fiction is 43.33 % and for genre of other books is 23.33%.

Page 16

BASIC MATHEMATICS (SMART STATISTICS)/2013

Most students prefer or interest in reading non- fiction books. This is because non-fiction is prose writing that presents and explains ideas or that tells about real people, places, objects, or events. It is an account or representation of a subject which is presented as fact. This presentation may be accurate or not; that is, it can give either a true or a false account of the subject in question. However, it is generally assumed that the authors of such accounts believe them to be truthful at the time of their composition. Autobiographies, biographies, essays, reports, letters, memos, and newspaper articles are all types of non-fiction.

Our third question, is total of money are spending by student of PPISMP sem 3 in IPGKBM to buy variety of books. When we do survey, we found that, most of them spend money around RM 10 to RM 15 to buy books is 40 % . Most students buy a book with a little money in order to save costs. To gain more knowledge about the books, they would rather find material on the Internet. For this reason, they prefer to buy books at a low cost.

It is important to encourage the reading habit so that people grow mentally and fulfil their potential at every level from village to university. Neither a subsistence farmer nor a graduate chemist can fulfil his or her potential without the cognitive growth that comes from reading widely and people will not read further than their immediate needs if they are not given the reading habit. Such growth is every person's right and will benefit the country economically as well as benefitting the individual personally.

Finally and most important of all it is necessary to spread the word, to create a general awareness of the importance of books to the mental growth of the individual and to the economic growth of the nation. It is necessary most of all to give books to the people, to give plenty of books which are both easy and interesting and to provide these in a manner that is culturally acceptable. Once people get the reading habit, they will pass it on, the demand for books will grow and the citizens of Papua New Guinea will start to achieve as they should.

In my work to done this task, I had reaches many trouble. I cant find the material about mode, median and mean. So I try to find another way. I try to find the material of mode, median and mean in internet and books from library. I also cannot find the best material in the books from library .After that I try to find the type of graphs in the internet. I tried to use the internet to identified type of graphs and complete my task in Basic Mathematics. Beside that, I also stuck when I do this task because of the tasks question. I cannot understand what is the task exactly wanted. So I decide to see my lecturer, Miss. Vijayalecthumi d/o Maniveloo to ask her kindness to show me what are this task really want. It is note as to meet Miss. Vijayalecthumi d/o Maniveloo with because she always not is around the Institute. Sometimes he has meeting, so I cannot see her if I have a problem in my task. In addition, I can feel the strength and weakness when do this task. The weakness is how to make the survey and what is the problem in the survey. Another that is how to draw a graph based on the survey. I feel this is very hard to do because we do not have many times in institute doing that survey. When I want to do this task, I fell very weak because do not have any experiences make a survey before this. The strength when do this task is I know how to make a survey. I can use this skill when I become a teacher soon. I also know how to draw pie chart, bar chart and histogram based on the survey. In addition, I know what is mode, median and mean in the graph. This knowledge is very important to me when I become a teacher soon. I can use this knowledge when do the survey of the result in my class. I feel much enjoyed when doing the task because I can learn many things such as how to find books in the library, how to search internet and the outline of the report .All of it can help me in my studies to become a teacher soon. Because of him, now I have understand what to do and then I do it on my own and completely done before the date of submission. I really thankful to all of who had helped me to did my work.

First of all, let me thanks and praises to Allah the creator of the universe for giving the chance for me to complete this coursework successfully and happily. In the same time, I also want to thank my beloved lecturer for guiding me in completing my coursework. Besides, I also wanted to thank my teammates as they supported each other in sharing and contributing their brilliant idea with me to complete this coursework successfully with strong bonding among us. Statistic is one of the important mathematical reasoning in helping us to solve our mathematical problem in daily life. By applying the mathematical principle of statistic in solving the problem I experienced, I could calculated the mathematical problem more easier and efficient. For example I applied the principle of statistic in calculating the percentage and the number of respondent who gave their opinion based on the statement of reading habits among student of PPISMP sem 3 in IPGKBM will give positive effect. By applying statistic, I could see the first perception of the data that I had collected earlier. The data then could be tabulated in the form of table or any other diagram. Other than that, we can make a an earlier conclusion despite hypothesis by using statistic. We can make an inference too by looking and analysing the statistic that we had made. From there, we could analysed and interprated more data that had been collected. As a conclusion, the applying of statistic concept in our daily life could make people to understand more clearly of the data in the form of diagram and graft.

I complete the short course work assignments Basic Mathematics (MT 3311D) at a specified time. I feel very blessed to be a group with Bhavanii d/o Rajasegar and Jumaalrina Binti Sulaiman. Thanks to both of them because they have given quite encouraging cooperation in completing this course work. Basic Maths assignment title is smart statistic. Our lecturer, Pn.Nazimah Binti Abdullah and Miss. Vijiyalecthumi d/o Maniveloo has provided enough information to us complete and accurate in completing this task. In this work, we have been seeking information from various sources such as books that we borrowed from the library and Internet resources.

For me, this task quite challenging because it requires such a high concentration of each of the questions we try to solve in this task. During completion of this assignment, the problems we face. But, thank God thanks to the cooperation and patience of our team members make the barrier as a motivation to finish this task properly. In completing this task, a lot of knowledge and new knowledge that we can. It makes us more understanding on this subject.

Finally, I know how to do the conduct survey about reading habits among students of PPISMP sem 3 in IPGKBM. I want to thank to all who have helped our team in completing this task within the required time frame.

Thank you.
