Our Intentions: Technology Inspired

• In 2010 there will be a £25 million competition for
Collaborative R&D projects in these six Technology-Inspired
areas.
– Projects will be linked to the priorities listed in the strategy
documents.
– The last two of these will be published shortly

• We’re conscious that small companies need time to prepare

for such a major investment

• Hence we’re investing £1 million now in about 40 feasibility

studies to help this preparation.

Driving Innovation

£1m: Technology-Inspired Innovation

• Small and micro companies
– 50 employees or less

• Single company or collaborative

• Project cost £33k (75% from us)

– To complete by 26th Feb 2010

• “Light-touch” 1-stage application

• Studies may become proposals

for a 2010 follow-on competition
– Budget around £25m for CR&D
– Further details available early 2010

Why Digital Britain?

Driving Innovation

We’re swamped by information…

Internet Video to PC

Source: Cisco 2008

Driving Innovation

…but it’s getting hard to make £ from it

…not to mention confusing.

Driving Innovation

Our vision for a digital Britain...

For all participants in Digital Britain

to benefit fairly
from creation, distribution and
consumption
of digital content
Driving Innovation

Our Team
Driving Innovation

Our Strategy has

priorities in three
areas:
Driving Innovation

The Network
• We will encourage technology to
make the existing infrastructure
work more efficiently...
• And promote the development of
ultra-fast broadband, upgradable
to speeds of 1 to10Gb/s.
Driving Innovation

Content and Services

• We will encourage the
development of technology and
tools that can support the creation
of digital content and the extraction
of value from it
• We will work with public sector
information and online service
providers, and mobilise industry
solutions to their software and
services challenges.
Driving Innovation

Protecting and enabling

• We will work to remove the barriers
to new business models emerging
- specifically around cost, trust and
understanding.
• We will work with business to
develop tools, services and
interfaces which will ensure a
positive user experience.
Driving Innovation

Collaboration is key
• People have to work together to find integrated
solutions which will benefit all
• Business interests are seen as both inter-related
and conflicting

• We also need a safe way to explore...

Driving Innovation

The digital TeStBed

Driving Innovation

The digital TeStBed

• A controlled environment for business and
technology experimentation
• Where real members of the public will try out
new services and new equipment - testing new
technology, and studying behaviour
• Trying out new ways to run the business of the
internet, and businesses on the internet
• Aiming to understand what will work for business
over the coming ten years.
Driving Innovation

Best Current Thinking: 3 TeStBed types:

Gen I: On today’s standard infrastructure.
An environment for network operators and service
providers to test new business models together.
Gen II: On pilots of Next Generation Access and
wireless/mobile infrastructure.
Demonstrating the additional businesses that can be
supported by higher bandwidths and/or improved
interfaces.
Gen III: On dedicated networks serving eg
universities.
Demonstrating possible business models and
applications for the further future.
Driving Innovation

When & Where?

•Budget of up to £10M for the construction and operation of
the test beds

•Currently in consultation on scope and not yet in a position

to decide about locations or delivery partners

•We aim to detail functional specifications against which

consortia can develop proposals in October.

•First decisions on consortia and locations: end 2009

•First test beds to go live: mid 2010.
