Section 3: NetWare Configuration
NetWare Configuration
NetWare Utilities Overview
This section provides information on the various NetWare utility programs that are available to you, with
emphasis on the Novell PCONSOLE utility that is used to perform all KN-302 print server functions.
As an alternative to using PCONSOLE, the procedure using the NWADMIN utility is provided for configur-
ing NetWare 4.0x (NDS).
PCONSOLE is an integral part of the Konica Network Management Utility. Separate procedures are provided
to show how to configure the KN-302 for the NetWare version you are using.
Before users of the Novell NetWare Network Operating System can print, the KN-302 print server must be
configured according to the instructions included in this section.
q How to Access the HTTP Server with an IP browser other than the MAP Utility.
q Konica Management Access Program (MAP) is a Windows based browser utility. The MAP utility
allows you to access the KN-302 and can be used to activate network protocols, configure the print server
and printer port, reset KN-302 from a remote location, and troubleshoot problems. Help screen information is
included to show you how to use the MAP Utility.
q Configure Using NetWare 2.15 and 3.1x describes how to use PCONSOLE to configure and set up KN-
302 printers for printing and to set up the Notify option.
q Configure Using NetWare 4.0x Directory Services (NDS) describes how to use the Konica Network
Management Utility as well as the NWADMIN utility to configure and set up the KN-302 print Server for
use with version 4.0x Directory Services.
q Configure Using NetWare 4.0x Bindery Emulation describes how to use PCONSOLE to configure and
set up the KN-302 Print Server for use with Version 4.0x Bindery Services.
q Primary File Server explains how to define a Primary File Server and gives you guidelines beforehand
about the effect it has on your network system.
PCONSOLE
• Use PCONSOLE to set up the KN-302 print server and set the print queues. This utility helps you
control network printing and allows you to view information about network printing.
PRINTDEF
• Use to set up a database of printer definitions. Define device drivers for network printers, plotters,
and other devices. The information defined with the utility is then used by CAPTURE, NPRINT,
PCONSOLE, and PRINTCON.
PRINTCON
• Use to define the preferred print options and set the options up as standard configurations.
PRINTCON serves as a database for printing with CAPTURE, NPRINT, and PCONSOLE.
• The tasks include edit print job configurations, select default print job configurations, and copy
print job configurations from one user to another.
CAPTURE
• Use to print screen displays, save data to a network file, and print to a network printer from a non-
network software application.
NPRINT
• Use to print files from outside an application to a network printer. The files must be DOS text files,
or files that are formatted by the application for a specific printer type (for example, HP Laser).
To add new queues to the Use the PCONSOLE utility. See Print
KN-302 unit . . . Queue Functions in this Section.
To remove queues from the Use the PCONSOLE utility. See Print
KN-302 unit . . . Queue Functions in this Section.
To change the KN-302 print Use the Konica MAP utility that is on
server name . . . your Konica Network Management
Utility CD-ROM.
Option: If you have the MAP (Konica Management Access Program) Utility, use instructions on p. 3-7.
MAP gives you access to the Konica Network Management Utility, which allows you to perform all print
server functions.
If you do not have the MAP Utility, perform the following steps:
3. When the browser is up and running, type http:// followed by the IP address of the unit in the
Location field at the top of the browser screen, or by going to File at the menu bar and choosing
Open Location.
http://199.9.200.200
At this point, the IP Browser works the same as the Konica MAP Utility
(see Network Setup screen on p. 3-8).
While the Konica Network Management Utility can be accessed with any browser, such as Netscape, you
can also use the MAP (Konica Management Access Program) Utility to access and configure the KN-302.
The MAP Utility automatically installs when you install the Konica Network Management Utility CD-ROM.
If you have not already done so, install the Konica Network Management Utility program using the installa-
tion procedure on p. 2-6.
NOTE: The Konica Network Management Utility CANNOT be installed from DOS.
The MAP utility consists of the MAP Setup program and the MAP program. (See sample screens on next
page.)
You may also configure the maximum number of hops for the IP searches. The hop count number determines
how many sub-networks the program will search to find the print server units. An entry of zero [0] on the
screen searches only the current subnet. An entry of [2] searches a wire that is directly connected to the
workstation and all networks accessible through two routers. An entry of 15 or higher automatically
searches every connected network; but such a high number is not recommended due to the amount of traffic
it would generate.
MAP Program
The MAP program lets you utilize the default browser for viewing and changing the Print Server configura-
tion settings. To do so, click on any active KN-302 Print Server unit (see next page).
SN-49667 Konica KN-201 Running Novell NetWare (NDS), AppleTalk and TCP/IP

KN3 992380 Konica Ethernet Option Supporting Novell (NDS), TCP/IP and AppleTalk
KN3 992384 Konica Ethernet Option Supporting Novell (NDS), TCP/IP and AppleTalk
After clicking on any one of the active KN-302 Print Server units listed in the MAP Program, the Network
Setup screen displays (see next page) to allow you to select any function related to the printer system. (See
APPENDIX A for a full description of the resident HTTP Server).
NOTE: Menus and function items are explained in Using The MAP Utility (see p. 3-9) .
NOTE: You will be required to enter a password to perform most of the functions.
The default password is sysadm. It is case-sensitive and must be entered in lowercase.

System Functions
System Functions allow you to reset the unit when an error condition occurs; reset the unit to download a
new version of the print server software; return the unit to its factory defaults before configuring; check the
unit status on Novell NetWare, TCP/IP, or AppleTalk protocols; update the Ethernet network; change the
password assigned to the unit.
Reset
Two functions are available: Reset Unit lets you reset the print server to clear an error condition that is
preventing you from printing. Reset simply recycles the unit and leaves all current print server settings
intact. Typical error conditions that would require resetting the unit include the situation where the printer
port does not accept data for a print job, or the printer is printing codes instead of the desired text. When
you reset the unit, you may need to recycle the printer power Off, then On again to correct the problem.
Reset the Unit for Download lets you reset the print server in to download mode to enable you to update the
unit's flash read-only memory (ROM) with a new or updated software release. A software release normally
includes new features or fixes for the print server.
Factory Defaults
This function resets the print server to the factory default settings that came with the unit. This feature is
useful in the event you are moving the print server to a new location, or if the unit was set up improperly
and you need to start over again. Remember that this option clears any settings already defined for the print
server.
Unit Status
The Unit Status screen displays the current state for each protocol and print server port available on your
print server model. For each supported protocol (Novell NetWare, TCP/IP, AppleTalk), the top line displays
the protocols supported and indicates whether the protocol is currently enabled or disabled.
System Functions
Unit Status
Novell NetWare
For Novell NetWare, the file server status for each print server post is displayed as explained in the follow-
ing field descriptions:
File Server: The name of the file server(s) to which the print server is connected.
File Server Status: These status messages inform you of whether the server is connected or disconnected to
the print server. It also lets you know when the server is shutting down its connection to the print server.
Queue Name: The queue name assigned to the print server printer port.
Queue Status: This field displays the status of the queues servicing the print server printers. If there is a
problem printing, e.g., the queue is not available, the problem will be listed here.
System Functions

TCP/IP
The internet protocol (IP) and line printer daemon (LPD) settings are displayed for the print server and the
printer server printer ports. IP field settings are described below.
Subnet Mask: This address identifies the number of bits used for the subnet and host portions of the
address.
Default Gateway Address (if needed): This address is used if the routers on your network have a default
gateway address that needs to be listed for accessing the print server printers.
Base Port Number: The base number assigned to the print server port. For example, port [1] would be 100001.
DHCP: DHCP displays on the screen whether the function is On or Off. When DHCP is On, the KN-
302automatically obtains the IP address from the DHCP Server.
IP Address in NVRAM: This displays on the screen whether or not the IP Address is to be retained between
power cycles.
Banner: This displays whether the banner page option is turned On or Off.
The LPD settings are displayed for each print server port. This information includes the type of print jobs
supported for each print server printer. For example, if PCL and PS are displayed, this means that the printer
supports PCL and PS compatible print jobs.
AppleTalk
The print server unit name and the AppleTalk zone in which the print server resides are displayed. The name
will either be the default name KN3_(serial_number) or a user-defined name. The Port Status has a default
assigned printer name of Unit # (serial_number) 1. You cannot print to any printer with a disabled port
status.
System Functions
Network Address
The network address screen displays the print server unit serial number and the Ethernet address for the
unit.
Change Password
To change an existing password, you need to enter the new password in the New Password field, then
retype the new password in the Retype New Password field to confirm it.
Once you have confirmed the new password, then click on [Change Password] to make the change perma-
nent. Your existing password will be in the Old Password field.
Protocols
This section lets you set up configuration parameters for each protocol supported by your print server unit.
Novell NetWare Setup includes assigning a new name and password to the KN-302 Novell Print Server,
identifying the preferred file server connection, setting up for Novell Directory Services (NDS), identifying
the Ethernet frame type, and disabling Bindery Services.

Overview
Basically, the configuration function tells the Print Server which printers it is supporting. Configuration
procedures are performed using the PCONSOLE utility. To use the PCONSOLE utility, you must have
supervisor privileges.
Make sure your PCONSOLE version is not version 1.0, as the KN-302 cannot be configured with version 1.0.
Contact Novell if you need to upgrade your version of PCONSOLE.
• To configure the KN-302 for use with NetWare 4.x NetWare Directory Services, see p. 3-36.

Overview
NetWare Directory Services (NDS) offers a different, more advanced approach to network management than
previous NetWare versions. Generally, it stores and tracks all network objects.
As a rule, all 4.x servers must have NDS loaded in order to function. In this way, every NetWare 4.x server is
a Directory server, because it services named Directory objects, such as printers, print servers and print
queues.
With the appropriate privileges, you can create a print server object, which, once configured in its context
(or location) on the network, eliminates the cumbersome setup of print servers on every network server.
NDS provides true enterprise networking based on a shared network database rather than on individually
defined physical sites. The result is greatly improved print server setup and management.
NetWare 4.x also provides backward compatibility for 2.x, 3.x and 4.x print service in Bindery emulation.
The Directory Information Base (DIB) is used to store information about servers and services, users,
printers, gateways, etc., and is a distributed database, allowing access to data anywhere on the network
wherever it is stored.
NetWare versions prior to 4.x provide the same data found in the DIB but the data is stored in the NetWare
Bindery. DIB was designed with more flexible access, more specific security, and, since it is distributed, it
was designed to be partitioned.
The Directory uses an object-oriented structure rather than the flat-file structure of the Bindery, and offers
network-oriented access, rather than server-oriented access found in the Bindery.
The Directory is backward-compatible with the NetWare Bindery through Bindery emulation mode. When
Bindery emulation is enabled, Directory Services will accept Bindery requests and respond just as if a
Bindery existed on the NetWare server being accessed.
Overview (continued)
Information obtained from the Bindery query may not be stored in the server, since the Directory is a
partitioned and distributed database. Even though the NetWare 4.x server is not operating from a Bindery,
the applications making Bindery requests will not know the difference.
The Konica Network Management Utility program provided with the KN-302 is used to configure the
context of the KN-302 Print Server.
Novell NWADMIN
The Novell NWADMIN (NetWare Administration) program is used to create the directory tree, print server,
printer and print queue objects within the tree. See procedure on p. 3-43.
Snap-in support for the NetWare administrator (NWADMIN) utility is provided for the print server. This
offers a single point of control for Administrators for NetWare Directory Services (NDS).
NWADMIN lets administrators manage the print server from a central location.

The NetWare Configuration Menu shown above is for your reference while configuring NetWare Directory
Services. The procedure starts on the next page.
1. If you have not already done so, install the Konica Network Management Utility on your system (see
Installing the Konica Network Management Utility, p. 2-6). Make sure the Konica Printing system is
powered up and connected to the network.
NOTE: The serial number is the 6-digit number located on the label attached to the KN-302 circuit board.
To display detailed information about the individual KN-302 device(s), select “Options” from the Network
Setup menu and then select “Show All”).
The selected KN-302 unit’s Network Setup menu appears. See p. 3-36.
4. Under the “Protocols” section of the Network Setup menu, click on “Setup NetWare.” The NetWare
Configuration Menu displays.
Refer to the menu screen illustration shown on the previous page, as you follow the steps shown below.
7. Leave “Print Server Password” and “Password Retype” fields blank, unless you plan to assign a pass-
word to the Novell Print Server. The password entered here must match the password you define when
creating the print server object in NWADMIN or PCONSOLE.
8. In the “Preferred File Server:” field, enter the name of the Preferred File Server that you want the KN-302
Print Server to attach to first. This operation, in conjunction with listing all the file servers to be serviced on
this preferred file server, lets you connect directly to the file servers of choice rather than having the KN-302
search for all file servers it is to service (which may take a long time).
9. In the “Preferred NDS Context:” field, enter the preferred NDS context. The Preferred NDS Context refers
only to the context name, whether typed or non-typed. Do not begin the context path with a trailing period
(.). You do not need to write a container name (KN-302 Print Server Name) because it was provided in the
field above. See example below:
ou=standard.o=organization_1 (KONICA)
10. In the “Preferred NDS Tree” field, enter the preferred NDS tree name. If you don’t know what the tree
name is, type WHOAMI at the DOS prompt.
11. The “Print Queue Scan Rate” lets you select how often the KN-302 polls the Novell Netware queues to
see if any new print jobs need to be serviced. The default is one (1) second. Enter in the “Print Queue Scan
Rate” field a value between 1 and 255 seconds.
12. Select the “Ethernet Frame Type:” you want the KN-302 to use. If you select Auto-Sense, the correct
frame type is automatically selected.
13. Click on the “Disable Bindery:” checkbox if you want to disable Bindery Services. Bindery services is
disabled if the checkbox is marked. When you disable Bindery Services, the KN-302 will not support any of
the print servers on any Bindery file servers.
14. After completing the above steps, enter the password in the password field, using lowercase letters, then
click on “Accept Settings" to store the new configuration settings in the KN-302’s nonvolatile memory.
NOTE: The default password is “sysadm.”
These changes will not take effect until you power down the Konica Printing System, and then power it back
on.
As an alternative to NWADMIN, NetWare offers PCONSOLE for those who prefer it. PCONSOLE can be
used to set up static information about print servers such as, which queues to service, and whom to notify
in the event of a problem. See Novell NetWare documentation for more information about the use of
PCONSOLE for NDS.
2. Highlight the Organizational Unit or Organization where you want to create the print service in the
Directory Tree, select the Object item from Network Setup and choose Create.
NOTE: In NWADMIN, you can create objects another way by selecting an Organizational Unit, clicking on the right
mouse button to display a pop-up menu, clicking on Create, then using the left mouse button to display the New Object
window.
3. When the New Object window appears, scroll down the Class of New Object icon list, select the Printer
icon and click on the OK button.

button. The Print Server Name must match the name that is entered in the KN-302's Print Server Name field
(see Step 6, p. 3-50).
1. Once again, highlight the Organizational Unit, select the Object item from the menu and choose Create.
2. At the New Object window, scroll down the Class of New Object icon list, select the Print Queue icon,
and click on the OK button.
3. At the Create Print Queue screen, click on the Directory Service Queue button, then type in values for
Print Queue Name and Print Queue Volume and click on the Create button.
If you do not know the Print Queue Volume name (the hard drive you will be accessing), click on the icon to
the right of the volume field. The Select Object window will appear with the volume listed in Objects. If the
volume is not listed, scroll the Directory Context items until you find the volume where you want the queue
to reside.
Click on the object (hard drive) of your choice and it will appear in the Selected Object field. Click on the OK
button. The full volume will now appear in the Print Queue Volume field. Finally, click on the Create button.

Printing System.
Overview
Novell’s NetWare 4.0x can operate in the Bindery Services Emulation mode and NetWare Directory Services
(NDS) mode (see NetWare Directory Services to configure the print server in this mode).
While Bindery Emulation services and NDS services run simultaneously and transparently to each other, the
print server may be configured to operate with Bindery Services mode only, as described in this section; or
with NDS only. When configured under NDS, the print server will also service older file servers operating in
bindery mode.
NOTE: If the Bindery Services mode is not running, the print server will be unable to find its file servers, and the status page
will indicate that the Novell NetWare protocol is not active.
Before installing the print server on a Novell NetWare 4.x server in Bindery Emulation mode, first check to be
sure the server has Bindery Context by using the Confirming Bindery Context procedure on the next page.
If the server does not have Bindery Context, the Novell administrator must execute either a SET command
from the console prompt, or, modify the AUTOEXEC.NCF file to include the proper SET command and
restart the server.
NOTE: The command entered from the console prompt takes effect immediately, whereas, the definition in the autoexec
file takes effect only when the server is shut down and then restarted.
Using PCONSOLE
Perform the following steps to determine if the server has Bindery Context:
3. When the file displays, look to see if you have a statement similar to
<Name> is the designation for the Server Context, and is obtained by starting PCONSOLE. The Server
Context name is displayed in the upper left corner of the Available Options menu screen.
4. If no such name statement in on the screen, you must add that statement to enable the KN-302 to work. In
that case, exit from PCONSOLE and use a DOS text editor to add the following statement to the
AUTOEXEC.NCF file:
5. After adding the statement to the AUTOEXEC.NCF file, you must power down the server and restart it for
the changes to take effect.
Or, as an alternative method, the network administrator can type the SET command at the Server console
to make changes immediately. In this case, any changes will be in effect until the server is powered down
and restarted again.
Important: The command at the console prompt takes effect immediately, whereas, the definition in the
autoexec file takes effect only when the server is shut down and then restarted.
Using PCONSOLE
Once you confirm the server has Bindery Context, you can configure the KN-302 using the PCONSOLE
procedure shown below. Use the function keys located at the bottom of the screen to configure the KN-302.
1. Start PCONSOLE.
2. Select Bindery Mode.

defined only if you have a very large network tied into many different sites with several file servers. This
procedure is performed with the PCONSOLE utility in the File Servers To Be Serviced option, details of
which start on the next page.
If you do not wish to define a primary file server, go directly to the PCONSOLE configuration procedure for
your particular NetWare version.
The following information describes the effect on your system when a primary file server is defined and not
defined.
• Minimum of two file servers can be placed on the file server list.
• The KN-302 searches for the primary server, starting with the servers that are closest (0 hops), and
works its way outward to amaximum of four hops.
When the KN-302 finds a primary file server, the print server -
• The KN-302 searches for file servers that are four hops or less away. The four hops that KN-302
searches are the four LAN segments directly connected to the first workstation or server.
NOTES:
1. The propagation delay is the time it takes for a packet of data to go from the file
server to the KN-302 unit.
2. A hop is a step in the data transmission from one node (a workstation or server)
through an intermediate node.

Overview
The following pages explain how to configure the Konica Print Server and your network for use with TCP/
IP communication in various environments.
Independent setup and installation procedures are provided for Windows systems and for most popular
UNIX systems.
The Konica Print Server TCP/IP capability will also operate with lpr spoolers on other systems, and with
spooler/supervisor capabilities that communicate raw print jobs to the Print Server TCP/IP Port.
This port number defaults to 10001, but may be changed to any desired number using the Konica Network
Management Utility.
You can use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for delivering IP addresses to hosts through an IP
network.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a protocol for network management services.
SNMP is supported for Management Information Base (MIB) II over IP for the print servers. This support
allows you to query MIB II to get system information about the print server.
Several versions and variations of Microsoft Windows may be used on NetWare and/or TCP/IP networks,
as well as on native Microsoft Windows network. This flexibility allows various options for setting up the
network printing system even though this Konica Print Server does not support Netbeui.
• If the Windows workstations are connected to a NetWare network, configure the printer interfaces for
NetWare, and use standard Windows/NetWare utilities to provide access to the printer.
• If NetWare is not to be used, the users may access the printer using TCP/IP. This section describes
installation under Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, and Windows NT.
UNIX Printing with TCP/IP requires that the workstation have TCP/IP capability; or that the workstation
can share an lpr queue on a Windows NT server (for example) that has one. In general, if printers are not
shared, an lpr queue must be created on each workstation from which printing is initiated. See Windows
documentation about sharing printers.
Windows for Workgroups does not normally come with TCP/IP. However, various TCP/IP facilities are
available for Windows for Workgroups workstations, including a free TCP/ IP stack provided by Microsoft.
Third party lpr spoolers are available.
The following instructions are based on the Microsoft TCP/IP stack and a shareware lpr application that is
available from various sources, including the Konica Print Server manufacturer.
• You will need files WFWTCP32.zip and WFWTCP32.txt for TCP/IP, and files WLPRS41.zip and
wlprspl.txt for lpr.
• You will need the BOOTPL.exe file if you wish to use the BOOTP Lite program to set up IP parameters.
The BOOTPL.exe file is located on the Konica Network Management Utility CDROM.
• WFWTCP32.zip, WLPRS41.zip, and BOOTPL.exe are both available for downloading from the Konica
WEB server located at: http://www.kbm.com.
Installing TCP/IP
To set up TCP/IP on the workstations, follow the instructions in the text file for the TCP/IP stack. These
instructions are part of the self-exploding files that you downloaded from the Web site. They are the
copyright of Microsoft and cannot be included here.
The Windows lpr Spooler Version 4.1 (wlprspl.txt), provides detailed instructions for decompressing and
installing the shareware lpr spooler.
The Konica Print Server must be given an IP address and routing information before being used with TCP/
IP.
This can be accomplished with Konica Printer Management for Windows if you have a NetWare connection
on your network, or with Apple Administration Program for Macintosh if there is an Apple Macintosh on
the network.
Follow the instructions for these programs provided in Section 3 or Section 4 (see Note).
NOTE: If you cannot use these programs, you can use either the BOOTP Lite program described on p. 5-5 or the ARP procedure
described on p. 5- 6.
3. Keep the status sheet handy for the Ethernet (MAC) address.
It should show that TCP/IP is enabled, but that the Protocol address is not configured.
NOTE: If the unit already has an IP address, the IP Address procedures on the following pages will not be required.
This procedure uses the BOOTP protocol. The Konica Print Server must be on the same network segment
as the workstation that you are using to configure it. The TCP/IP stack must be installed and operating.
The BOOTPL.exe program works with a 16 Bit TCP/IP Stack (FTP, NetManage, B&W, or WFWG).
NOTE: The BOOTP request is for a finite period of time. The print server must be freshly reset for this to work.
4. Enter the IP address (you want to assign to the Konica Print Server);
the Subnet Mask ( matching what you are using on your subnet); the Default Gateway (your router's IP
address); the MAC address of the Konica Print Server (Hardware Address, listed on the Status sheet as
Ethernet Address). Use colons as delimiters as shown on the status sheet rather than the dashes that Win-
dows uses.
5. Click on Go. You will get a message that the program is Verifying, and then it will tell you whether the
unit is active or not.
6. Wait for about five minutes for the Konica Print Server to reset. The Status sheet should report the
newly entered IP information.
Continue until you get a reply. If you get no response, verify that TCP/IP is enabled on the status sheet. If
the IP information is not displayed on the sheet, then repeat the above procedure.
(a) ping [any valid IP address on your network - not the print server].
The identified unit should reply. If you do not ping the network, the
arp cache will be empty (no static entries), and you will receive an
error 2 message (after performing the next step).
3. Recycle the power on the print server. The Konica Print Server will produce a status page that should
include the entered IP address.
4. When the Konica Print Server is up again, type the following at the command prompt:
NOTE: This only enters the IP address. You must use the Konica Network Management Utility to enter the other IP parameters.
Once you install the spooler onto the workstation, the setup program will create a group and icon.
3. At the Remote Host Name prompt, enter the Konica Print Server IP Address, and enter PORT1 for the
Remote Printer Name.
C:\SPOOL\PRINTER_NAME.
Windows 95 comes with a TCP/IP stack. To print with this protocol, a client also requires an lpr utility.
This program is available from various sources. The lpr queue can be created on each workstation or the lpr
queue can be created on one workstation and shared on the network. Windows 95 workstations can also
share a lpr printer installed on an Windows NT server on the network.
The following instructions are based on a shareware lpr application that is available from various sources,
including the Konica Print Server manufacturer. You will need the wlprs41.zip and wlprspl.txt for the lpr.
If you wish to use the BOOTP Lite program, you will also need the ntBOOTP.exe file. The ntBOOTP.exe
files provided on the Konica Network Management Utility CDROM. ntBOOTP.exe and WLPRS41.zip are
also available for downloading from the Konica WEB server located at http://www.kbm.com.
The Windows lpr Spooler Version 4.1 (wlprspl.txt), provides detailed instructions for decompressing and
installing the shareware lpr spooler.
The Konica Print Server must be given an IP address and routing information to be used with TCP/IP. This
can be done with Konica Network Management Utility for Windows if you have a NetWare connection on
your network, or with Apple Administration Program for Macintosh if there is an Apple Macintosh on the
network. Instructions for these programs are in Section 3 or Section 4. If you cannot use these programs,
you can use either thentBOOTP program or the ARP procedure.
Keep the status sheet handy for the Ethernet (MAC) address. It should show that TCP/IP is enabled but that
the Protocol address is not configured. If the unit already has an IP address, these procedures will not work.
Use the ntBOOTP Program or any standard Internet Web Browser to change the IP parameters.
Microsoft Windows 95
This procedure uses the BOOTP protocol. The Konica Print Server must be on the same network segment
as the workstation that you are using to configure it, and the TCP/IP stack must be installed and operating.
Use ntBootp instead of ARP to configure the IP address.
You may provide the IP address and other IP parameters to the Konica Print Server on 32 Bit TCP/IP Stack
(Windows NT & Windows 95) using the ntBOOTP.exe program. You must store the file in the Windows
directory.
NOTE: The BOOTP request is for a finite period of time. The print server must be freshly reset for this to work.
4. Enter the IP address that you want to assign to the Konica Print Server, its Subnet Mask (make sure it
matches what you are using on your subnet), Default Gateway (your router's IP address), and the MAC
address of the Konica Print Server (Hardware Address, listed on the Status sheet as Ethernet Address). Use
colons as delimiters as shown on the status sheet rather than the dashes Windows uses.
5. Click on Go.
6. Wait about five minutes. The Konica Print Server should recycle and produce a status sheet showing the
IP parameters you have just entered.
7. Pull down the Admin menu to Verify. You should get a message back stating that the Unit is Active. If you
do not get this message, verify that TCP/IP is enabled on the status sheet.
8. When you get a response that your unit is active, you should be able to ping the Konica Print Server.
(a) ping [any valid IP address on your network - not the print server].
The identified unit should reply.
(b) arp -s [IP address of Konica Print Server] and [MAC Address].
The entry should be accepted.
(c) ping [IP address of the Konica Print Server].
Request should time out.
2. Recycle the power on the printer, or let the Konica Print Server reset itself. The Konica Print Server will
produce a status page that should include the entered IP address.
3. When the Konica Print Server is up again, at the command prompt, enter:
ping [IP address of Konica Print Server]
Continue until you get a reply.
NOTE: This only enters the IP address. Use the ntBOOTP Program or any standard Internet Web Browser to change the IP
parameters.
Once the spooler is installed on the workstation, the setup program will create a group and icon.
4. Go to Settings.
5. Select Printers.
6. Choose Add Printer.
7. Click on Next.
8. Select your driver, and click on Next.
At this point, you should see an entry for your Windows lpr Spooler's printer in the “Available ports” listing
displayed as, for example:
C:\SPOOL\PRINTER_NAME
Windows NT (version 3.5 or higher) comes with TCP/IP and lpr capabilities, although these must be
installed when the unit is configured. You must install the TCP/IP Protocol, Simple TCP/IP Services, and
Microsoft TCP/IP UNIX Printing prior to entering the network printer on the workstation.
NOTE: Once you have lpr installed on a Windows NT Server workstation and have allowed printer sharing,
other workstations may use the printer through the Microsoft Windows Network without having to have
separate lpr queues installed on each workstation.
The Konica Print Server must be given an IP address and routing information before being used with TCP/
IP.
This can be done with Konica Network Management Utility for Windows if you have a NetWare connection
on your network, or with Apple Administration Program for Macintosh if there is an Apple Macintosh on
the network.
If you cannot use these programs, you can use either the ntBOOTP program or the ARP procedure. To use
ntBOOTP, you will need the ntBOOTP.exe file. This file is on the Konica Network Management Utility for
Windows CDROM supplied with the Konica Print Server, and can be downloaded from Konica's WEB
Server located at the following address:
http://www.konicabt.com
NOTE: Keep the status sheet handy for the Ethernet (MAC) address. It should show that TCP/IP is enabled but that the Protocol
address is not configured. If the unit already has an IP address, these procedures will not work. Use the ntBOOTP Program or any
standard Internet Web Browser to change the IP parameters.
This procedure uses the BOOTP protocol. The Konica Print Server must be on the same network segment
as the workstation that you are using to configure it, and the TCP/IP stack must be installed and operating.
You may provide the IP address and other IP parameters to the printer's Konica Print Server on 32-Bit
TCP/IP Stack (Windows NT & Windows 95) using the ntBOOTP.exe program. You will have to store the
file in the Windows directory. You can use ntBOOTP Lite to configure the IP address instead of ARP.
NOTE: The BOOTP request is for a finite period of time. The print server must be freshly reset for this to work.
4. Enter the IP address that you want to assign to the Konica Print Server; its Subnet Mask (make sure it
matches what you are using on your subnet); Default Gateway (your router's IP address); and the MAC
address of the Konica Print Server (Hardware Address, listed on the Status sheet as Ethernet Address). Use
colons as delimiters as shown on the status sheet rather than the dashes Windows uses.
5. Click on Go.
6. Wait about five minutes. The Konica Print Server should recycle and produce a status sheet showing the
IP parameters you have just entered.
7. Pull down Admin menu to Verify. You should get a message back stating that the Unit is Active. If you do
not get this message, check that TCP/IP is enabled on the status sheet
8. When you get a response that your unit is active, you should be able to ping the Konica Print Server.
ping [any valid IP address on your network - not the print server]
The identified unit should reply.
NOTE: You need to ping something on your network prior to using the arp -s command. Windows NT will not allow you to add
an entry to an empty arp cache.
2. Recycle the power on the printer or let the Konica Print Server reset itself. The Konica Print Server will
produce a status page that should include the entered IP address.
3. When the Konica Print Server is up again, at the command prompt, enter:
NOTE: This only enters the IP address. Use the ntBOOTP Program or any standard Internet Web Browser to change the IP
parameters.
Use this procedure to set up the lpr spooler on the Windows NT server.
1. Open Control Panel.
2. Go to Printers.
3. Choose Printer Menu.
4. Choose Create Printer.
5. Enter a printer name (For example, lprprinter).
6. Select the proper printer driver.
7. Enter a description. This is optional.
8. In the Print To dialog, choose Other.
9. In Print Destinations window, select lpr port.
10. When the add lpr compatible printer window is displayed, enter:
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides a mechanism for delivering IP addresses to hosts
through an IP network, and, for the delivery of other configuration parameters, such as a subnet mask or
gateway address.
Important: When configuring a DHCP server, you need to establish a permanent lease or reservation for the
print server. Failure to do this may cause the same address to be given out to another host.
On power-up of the print server, a DHCP request is broadcast. Based on the tables established on the DHCP
server, the reserved IP address information will be returned, the print server will automatically be reset and
restarted using the reserved address information.
FTP printing allows users several ways to print files through the internet directly from their favorite IP
browser or other FTP client.
To print from Netscape (only Netscape 2.0 or greater), use the following procedure:
2. Select File.
NOTE: FTP printing does not support selecting multiple file names.
The selected file is now sent to the printer.
If you wish to send text-based files to the PostScript printer on your print server, connect to that port. For
example, to print to A2PSx (ascii to postscript) on your print server from Netscape 2.0 (or greater):
2. Select File.
From Netscape 2.0 (or greater), use the drag and drop method of printing a file on your print server, as
follows:
2. Click and hold on the file that is on your system and drag it to your IP browser's window.
NOTES:
1. FTP printing does not support selecting multiple file names.
2. Only one person can be logged on to a port at any particular time.
FTP Client
The Konica Print Server can support UNIX TCP/IP printing in two modes:
• Host-based where a supplied line printer daemon is run on one or more workstations and print data
is communicated to the Konica Print Server via a TCP/IP port
or
• Printer-based lpd where the printer appears as a host running a line printer daemon.
Many operating systems provide the option of using host-resident printing or print server-resident printing.
In general, printer-based lpd is easier to use on BSD UNIX systems. This requires an entry in the printcap
file once the Konica Print Server has its IP information. Some UNIX System V systems have restrictions on
support of remote lpd printers, requiring that the host-based lpd approach be used.
Each printing mode has certain advantages over the other mode, as follows:
• The host-resident method can print the username and filename on its banner page; whereas the
print server-resident method prints a banner page with the host’s name.
• The print server-resident method requires you to configure the printer only one time, when you
install the print server.; whereas, the host-resident method requires that a printing daemon be
installed on every host that you want to be able to print jobs.
NOTE: The Konica Print Server will also operate with other host-resident print supervisor/spooler programs that present a print
image to the printer over a TCP/IP port.
Considering both the host-based and printer-based TCP/IP printing capabilities, the Konica Print Server
works with the following systems:
• Solaris:
Version 2.5
• HP-UX Series 700 and 800 Version 9.01 and Version 10.0
• AS400
The TCP/IP CDROM also includes source code so that you can recompose host-based code for configuring
on other System V platforms.
Regardless of the printing mode selected, the Konica Print Server must be given IP address and routing
parameters. You can configure the IP address for the Konica Print Server in one of the following ways:
Depending on the topology, you need to provide the MAC address of the Konica Print Server.
The MAC address is the 12-character code that is printed on the configuration status report each time the
printer is turned on.
You can use the BOOTP, rarp, or ping procedures only when the print server is in its factory default state
(when no IP information has been entered.)
After the print server has an IP address, you must use the Konica Network Management Utility, or the
Apple Administration Program (for Macintosh) to change an IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.
Using BOOTP
The BOOTP daemon is a native TCP/IP option for configuring the IP address of a non-disk network device.
To communicate the IP address, use the following procedure:
2. Log in as superuser on a host that is attached on the same network segment as the print server. Confirm
the subnet mask is the one you intend to use. However, if the server resides on another subnet, complete this
procedure to store the IP address in the print server.
3. Find the LAN address of the Konica Print Server. The address is printed on the configuration status
report each time you turn the printer on.
4. Edit the hosts file (usually /etc/hosts) or use NIS or DIS to add the IP address and Konica Print Server’s
node name. See the network administrator for the IP address. For example, a Konica Print Server named
printfast with an IP address of 192.9.200.200 has the following entry:
192.9.200.200 printfast
The same information uses the following format on an RFC 951 system:
8. Check the printer to verify that the Konica Print Server is connected to the network. Turn on the printer.
9. Wait until the printer powers up and finishes initializing to allow enough time for the IP address to
become known and to be saved in nonvolatile memory. The Konica Print Server should re-initialize itself.
10. After the Konica Print Server has re-initialized, send a ping command to verify that the print server
obtained its IP address. For example:
ping 192.9.200.200
If the print server has the address, a confirmation message displays:
192.9.200.200 is alive
12. Stop the BOOTP daemon and, if you want it to run, restart it.
Using rarp
The Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (rarp) allows network devices to query a server for their IP
addresses on start-up. This procedure requires a workstation with a rarp server.
If the server resides on another subnet, complete this procedure to store the IP address in the print server.
Reconnect the print server anywhere on the network.
3. Find the Ethernet address of the Konica Print Server. The address is printed on the configuration status
report when you power on the printer.
4. Edit the hosts file (usually /etc/hosts) or use NIS or DIS to add the IP Address and Konica Print Server's
node name.
See the network administrator for the IP address. For example, a print server with the name of printfast has
the following entry:
192.9.200.200 printfast
5. Edit the /etc/ethers file or use NIS or DIS to add the Ethernet address.
To continue the example, for the printfast card with an Ethernet address of 00:40:c8:00:00:ff, make the
following entry:
0:40:c8:0:0:ff printfast
6. If the rarp daemon is running, stop it and restart it. Verify that the daemon is running.
7. Check the printer to see that the print server is connected to the network. Turn on the printer.
8. Wait until the printer powers up and finishes initializing to allow enough time for the IP address to
become known and to be saved in nonvolatile memory. The Konica Print Server should then reset itself.
9. After the Konica Print Server has reset, send a ping command to verify that the print server obtained its
IP address. For example:
ping 192.9.200.200
If the print server has the address, a confirmation message displays:
192.9.200.200 is alive
11. Stop the rarp daemon and, if you want it to run, restart it.
Using ping
Use the following procedure to enter the IP address:
1. Turn off the printer.
2. Log in as superuser on a host on the same subnet as the print server. However, if the server resides on
another subnet, complete this procedure to store the IP address in the print server.
3. Find the Ethernet address of the Konica Print Server. The address is printed on the configuration status
report each time you turn the printer on.
4. Edit the hosts file (usually /etc/hosts) or use NIS or DIS to add the IP address and print server’s node
name. See the network administrator for the IP address. For example, a print server with a name of printfast
and an IP address of 192.9.200.200 has the entry:
192.9.200.200 printfast
5. Add an entry to the arp cache for the print server’s IP address and Ethernet address, as:
arp -s 192.9.200.200 0:40:c8:0:0:ff
6. Check the printer to see that the print server is connected to the network. Turn on the printer.
7. Send a ping command the Konica Print Server to verify it is running on the network, as for example:
ping 192.9.200.200 or ping printfast
The Konica Print Server will not respond to this ping command but it will read its IP address from the
packets.
8. Turn the printer off and back on again and then send the ping command again to verify that the print
server obtained its IP address. A confirmation message displays as:
192.9.200.200 is alive
9. Remove the entry from the arp cache using the following command. Specify the print server either by its
IP address or by its name, for example:
arp -d printfast
lpd is an implementation of the standard UNIX line printer daemon that lets you print across a TCP/IP
network without the need to install software on your workstation, with all filtering and banners done by
Konica Print Server.
Remote printing uses the same commands (lpr, lpq, lpc) as local printing.
The process begins when the lpr call finds a printer on a remote system by looking at the remote (rm) entry
in the /etc/printcap file for that printer.
lpr handles a print job for a remote printer by opening a connection with the lpd process on the remote
system and sending the data file (followed by the control file containing control information for this job) to
the remote system.
The printer-based lpd then filters the data and prints the job according to information contained in the
control file and its own printcap file.
The Konica Print Server lpd recognizes the format of a certain printer emulation and filters the data, if
possible, so it can be printed on the printer type you specify.
You can indicate to the Konica Print Server lpd what type of printer is attached to by either:
The sections that follow give specific lpd setup instructions for various systems.
To set up a remote printer on the host that sends jobs to Konica Print Server using printer resident lpd, add
an entry to the /etc/printcap file on your host for each printer you use. The procedure is described below.
This entry will send jobs spooled at /usr/spool/lpd/<printer_name> to the printer designated
<printer_name> to be printed at port 1 (the internal connection to the printer) of the Konica Print Server
designated as <remote_host>.
Installation and testing are done. You are now ready to print.
Use the following procedure to set up a remote printer on the host that sends jobs to the Konica Print
Server using the Konica Print Server's lpd.
6. When a window appears, change the values shown to configure the Konica Print Server. The values
displayed are default values. You must replace the short and long form filter values with the values shown in
the following table.
Use these procedures to install a Konica Print Server in a AIX 4.0 system:
4. Select Remote.
7. Use the host address of the Konica Print Server for the Remote System.
Installation is complete.
lp -d<queue_name> <file_name>
Set up a remote printer on the host that sends jobs to a Konica Print Server using the Konica Print Server
lpd. To do this:
6. When a window appears, add values to configure Konica Print Server. See example below.
7. At the bottom of the screen, select Remote Printer is on BSD system from the three choices available.
When working with the output queue description (WORKOUTQD), there are several fields that must be
defined for the Konica Print Server to function properly as a remote printer device.
Use the following procedure to define fields for the print server to make it function as a remote printer:
1. When prompted for the remote system, type INTNETADR so the AS/400 recognizes the device as an IP
device.
2. Type: PORT1
4. Internet address must be the IP address of the Konica Print Server device.
6. When prompted for transforming SCS to ASCII, type YES to allow the AS/400 do the character transla-
tion.
7. Manufacturer type and model must be the print driver that goes with your printer. For example,
OKI320IBM.
Use the following procedure to set up a remote printer on the host that sends jobs to a Konica Print Server.
3. “Do you want more information on specific printer types?” Press Enter.
A list of ULTRIX-supported printers is listed.
6. Designate a spooler directory and press Enter, or accept the default spooler directory displayed and press
Enter.
8. Designate PORT1 as the remote system printer name and press Enter.
9. You are asked to enter the name of a printcap symbol from a displayed list. Type Q and press Enter.
10. Your configuration is displayed. You are asked whether these values are final. Type Y or N and press
Enter. An example is shown below.
11. Add comments to the printcap file. For example, you can type:
Lois' printer down the hall <Enter>
Use the following procedure to set up a remote printer on the host that sends jobs to a Konica Print Server
using lpd.
6. Enter remote host name: type host name entered in printcap for Konica Print Server. For example, type:
Lprprinter
11. Using a line editor of your choice, edit the /etc/printcap file by changing :rp= entry to :rp= PORT1.
(See example below.)
printer1:\
:lp=:\ (used to specify device name for a local printer; field must be empty)
If your system recognizes the LPSYSTEM command, you do not need to install Konica's host-side software.
Another option is the admintool if your system supports it.
LPSYSTEM Installation
The following procedure must be executed from the Bourne Shell.
Type: SH then press Enter to enter the Bourne Shell program.
1. lpsystem -t bsd
Print server host name in /etc/hosts file. Your system may want its IP address instead of the remote host
name.
NOTES:
1. There is no space between the remote host name and !PORT.
2. Enable <local printername>
3. Accept <local printername>
The TCP/IP CDROM provided with the KN-302 Print Server includes install scripts for various UNIX
systems.
This section describes how to install TCP/IP printing on the KN-302 Print Server for any of the following
operating systems:
• System V Rel. 4
• SCO UNIX
• OSF1/ALPHA
• IBM AIX
• HP/UX
Once the Konica Print Server has its IP information loaded, the following steps are necessary for host-side
TCP/IP printing:
The following procedures are only necessary when using the supplied host-based lpr capability.
1. Log in as superuser to the system that spools directly to the print server.
mkdir /usr/PSC_install
NOTE: If you already have a Konica Print Server printer at your site and you are now installing another one, delete the files in the
installation directory not (/usr/Konica). If these files remain, they can prevent the installation of a subsequent print server.
4. Use the tar command to load the software from the CDROM. Choose your UNIX version from the
example from the following table, or if not shown, consult the man page for your system:
NOTE: The device name varies depending on the computer and its peripheral designations. The first BSD floppy device is often
called rfd0.
5. After performing the tar, the system will display a list of Konica Print Server files copied by the tar. At
this point, go to the appropriate section in this manual for instructions on running the installation script on
your system.
Filters
There will be certain options in executing the script for various systems.
The installation script can create an entry in the /etc/printcap file for your printer:
ASCII, PCLfiles
If your printer is not a PostScript printer, the install script uses an input filter (infilter) that supplies CR/LF
translation to print ASCII files on a PCL printer.
If your printer is a PostScript printer, your printcap file will reference psfilter which offers easy ASCII-to-
PostScript conversion. Normal PostScript format files are not affected. Proprietary and public domain filters
are available for broader filtering capabilities.
PSBanner
The Konica Print Server ships with an input filter called psbanner, an output filter to print PostScript
banners.
:lp=/dev/nic/<printer_name>:\
:if=/usr/nic/psfilter:\
:of=/usr/nic/psbanner:\
:sd=/usr/spool/<printer_name>:
The script automatically downloads the correct Konica Print Server utilities for your particular system and
prompts you for information as needed.
3. What is the printer name? Type desired printer name, then press Enter.
4. The screen displays install script information you provided, as for example:
When asked to OK this configuration, type yes or no, then press Enter.
5. The script creates a printcap entry for the printer just configured.
The screen displays the entry and asks if you want the script to append it to your /etc/printcap file. See
below for a sample printcap file.
In your /etc/printcap file, be sure not to change the name of the device given Konica Print Server in Step
2. You must reference the same lp: entry you wrote on the lp command line of the printcap file. For ex-
ample:
:lp=/dev/<printer_name>:\
:if=/usr/nic/infilter:\
:sd=/usr/spool/<printer_name>:
Except for the first line, all printcap entries must be prefaced with a tab.
6. The Installation script creates a spool directory in /usr/spool and starts the daemon for the newly config-
ured printer.
It also displays the path used in case you need to restart the daemon.
For example:
7. Run the ps command so that you can view all your lpd processes.
8. To stop ALL printing, use the kill command on your lpd processes.
Type: /usr/lib/lpd
It is recommended that you ping the Konica Print Server to test communications.
4. The screen displays your install script information, as, for example:
You are asked to OK this configuration. Type yes or no, then press Enter.
5. The script creates a printcap entry for the printer just configured.
The screen displays the entry (see sample printcap file below) and asks if you want the script to append it to
your /etc/printcap file.
Type yes or no, then press Enter. Type no to perform manual edits.
6. Installation for the system is completed. When prompted to configure additional printers, type yes or no,
then press Enter. It is recommended that you ping the Konica Print Server to test communications.
Like all BSD systems, ULTRIX uses the /etc/printcap file to configure a printer. The interface to the
installation script is the same for all BSD systems, however, the printcap entry is different.
If you use the printcap entry generated automatically by the installation script, this will be transparent to
you.
When asked to OK this configuration, type yes or no, then press Enter.
5. The script starts the daemon for the newly configured printer automatically. It also displays the path used
should you ever need to restart the daemon. In the following example, the path would be:
When the installation script is completed, you must configure the printer and make it known to the lp
system. The HP/UX lp system uses the lpadmin maintenance command to configure a printer (there is no /
etc/printcap file).
See HP's alternative SAM method for configuring the printer on next page.
HP supplies the sam program as an alternative method for configuring the printer. The printer name must be
the same as the one you entered during the Konica Print Server installation.
When using sam, specify everything as if the printer were directly connected to /dev/lprprinter/
printer_name.
The software installed with your HP system can satisfy most of your printing needs. HP supplies ASCII-to-
PostScript filters, and the system will invoke the filters automatically if you define the content type of the
printer as PostScript.
The HP/UX lp system also supplies interface scripts that produce PostScript banners. Use the lpfilter
command to define new filters and content types if necessary.
The full power and flexibility of the lp print service is now available to you. The fact that you are printing
across the network is completely transparent.
Installing and Printing on System V (Solaris Ver. 2)/System V Rel. 4 386-based Machine
Installation and setup is exactly the same for System V Solaris and SVR4 i386-based machines.
Solution uses a network direct filter called nicfilter. The system invokes nicfilter directly from the printer
interface file.
After completing the software download in Loading the Software, you must configure the printer and make
it known to the lp system.
1) AT&T/SVR4; 386
2) SCO UNIX System V
3) None of the above
4. Edit the printer interface program this printer uses to redirect output to the Konica Print Server. Then,
configure your printer using lpadmin.
In most cases you would use the default interface script named standard (usually found in the /usr/spool/
lp/admins/lp/model directory).
If you wish to use an interface tuned to a specific printer, you must have a copy of the interface file for the
port you want to initialize. For example:
cp /usr/spool/lp/model/standard /usr/nic/port1_interface
Installing and Printing on System V (Solaris Ver. 2)/System V Rel. 4 386-based Machine
(continued)
Most Version 2 Solaris machines have a shell variable called FILTER that can be changed to invoke
nicfilter.
You must specify the Konica Print Server name (PSC_name) and the Konica Print Server port (10001)
indicated above to enable the nicfilter to connect to the Konica Print Server unit. The name must be the
same as the one you entered in /etc/hosts for this Konica Print Server.
The remaining arguments are optional. nicfilter uses them to produce a high quality banner. The lp print
service user name, request id, file names and options always pass to the interface file. They will be available
in any interface script as shell variables, although they may have different names.
If you disable banners in the lp command, the system will set the ${nobanner} option to yes. This will
suppress the Konica Print Server banner generation.
If you don’t define the FILTER shell variable in your interface file, you can usually modify it to pipe data to
nicfilter. The simplest way to accomplish this is to enclose the entire script in parentheses and pipe it to
nicfilter, using the arguments described above.
If you wish to use the banner generated by the interface file, simply omit the last four arguments.
NOTE: These arguments are shell variables from the interface file. They may have different names (names used above are from the
standard interface file supplied with most Version 2 and i386 systems).
Installation and setup is similar for HP/UX and SCO UNIX systems.
The Konica Print Server solution uses a network direct filter called nicfilter. The system invokes nicfilter
directly from the printer interface file.
After completing software download in Loading the Software, you must configure the printer and make it
known to the lp system. Use the following steps:
1) AT&T/SVR4; 386
2) SCO UNIX System V
3) None of the above
Type the name assigned in the /etc/hosts file, then press Enter.
For example, type: printfast
4. What is the printer name for this Konica Print Server-linked printer?
Type a printer name, then press Enter.
Do you want to accept this configuration? Type yes or no, then press Enter.
6. The script automatically starts the daemon for the newly configured printer. It also displays the path used
should you ever need to restart the daemon. In the preceding example, the path would be:
This example reflects names supplied to the script earlier. When the installation script is complete, you must
still configure the printer and make it known to the lp system.
The SCO UNIX lp system uses the lpadmin maintenance command to configure a printer (there is no /etc/
printcap file).
NOTE: Your host may require you to specify the model by using the -i command.
enable printer_name
accept printer_name
You can also use other options for the lpadmin command. See your system documentation for details. Note
that the printer name must be the same as the one you entered during Konica Print Server installation.
The software installed with your SCO system can satisfy most of your printing needs. SCO supplies ASCII-
to-PostScript filters and the system will invoke them automatically if you define the content type of the
printer as PostScript.
The SCO UNIX lp system also supplies interface scripts that produce PostScript banners. Use the lpfilter
command to define new filters and content types if necessary. The full power and flexibility of the lp print
service is now apparent. Your printing across the network is completely transparent.
The qdaemon uses configuration information stored in the /usr/lpd/qconfig file to manage queues and
route jobs to the proper devices. This information includes entries for each virtual printer and physical
device known to the system.
An AIX virtual printer is simply a high level software view of a data stream, queue, and device that controls
how a given job will be processed. A different virtual printer should be defined for each data stream that a
real printer supports. For example, you would use different virtual printers for PostScript and PCL jobs even
though they are destined for the same physical printer.
Configuring a Konica Print Server printer on an AIX system approximates configuration of a local printer as
closely as possible. The only difference is that the physical device associated with your Konica Print Server
printer must be a named pipe used by the print daemon to route data to Konica Print Server.
The following procedure shows the most straightforward way to add a printer to your system:
4. The screen will display the install script information you provided, as for example:
When asked to OK this configuration, type yes or no, then press Enter.
5. Configure a virtual printer using printer_name as the physical device, where printer_name is the same
printer name chosen during install.
6. Use the following command to shut down the qdaemon and stop all printing:
stopsrc -s qdaemon
from: /dev/printer_name
to: /dev/nic/printer_name.
The installation script creates the named pipe and starts the supplied print daemon using the printer name
and Konica Print Server information you supplied.
Since the AIX System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) cannot accept a named pipe as a printer device,
the installation script creates a null character device in /dev/printer_name.
By entering the device name printer_name for configuration purposes, virtual printers can be added either
through SMIT or through the mkvirprt command.
During this process you also select a particular printer type for the new printer, which inherits the set of
predefined attributes for that printer type.
In most cases, this set of attributes will be sufficient, but it can be changed either through SMIT or by using
the chvirprt command. If you need to make more extensive changes on your printer, see the AIX RISC
System/6000 documentation for information.
Before you edit the files, be sure that the following daemon is running:
1. Run nicinst.
3. Choose Devices.
4. Choose Printer/Plotter.
8. For Type of Printer, enter a number from the printers list, then press Enter.
printer_name:
file=/dev/printer_name
backend=/usr/lpd/probe
16. Type startsrc -s daemon. Now you can print using the lp command.
The AIX lp command works slightly differently from the lp command for other System V Release 4
systems. The following lp commands can be used to print files:
lp -d <queue_name> <filename> or
lp -d <queue_name>:<device_name> <file_name>

The KN-302 has two LED status indicators: amber and green. The Amber LED generally indicates job
activity by flashing when a print job is being communicated to the card. When the amber LED light is Off,
no activity is occurring. The green LED indicates the operating condition of the card when it is powered on
during normal operation. The following table provides the conditions indicated by the green and/or amber
LED.
Green blinks rapidly Performing self test Failed Ethernet Check network

6-6 Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
• CHECK PRINT SERVER STATUS PAGE(S) TO CONFIRM THAT EACH NETWORK PROTOCOL IS INSTALLED
AND CONFIGURED CORRECTLY.
• IF YOU MADE CHANGES TO YOUR NETWORK, BE SURE THE CHANGES DID NOT AFFECT THE PRINT
SERVER PRINTER(S) CONFIGURATION.
Check to see if you installed and configured the Print Server correctly. See section 3 for Novell or
section 5 for TCP/IP.
If you added, changed or removed any network hardware, check to see if it is installed correctly.
• CHECK TO SEE IF THE USERS ARE ON THE SAME NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM. IF YES, REFER TO
TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION FOR NOVELL OR TCP/IP.
If you added or updated software, make sure the version is compatible and installed correctly.
Go to your Novell NetWare manual to confirm Setup.
Troubleshooting 6-7
Troubleshooting
• An error on your printer control panel may indicate a break in communication from the network to
the printer. This may be a result of the network server going down, or from cables that are loose or
disconnected.
• Check to see if the printer control panel displays printer status, and be sure the printer is on-line.
If the control panel displays an error, check error conditions and jam conditions in the printer
manual.
• If the printer is plugged into the power outlet and the printer is turned ON, try using another outlet.
• Make sure you are using the correct network interface port and that each connection is secure.
• Try another cable to make sure you do not have a bad cable.

Troubleshooting
KN-302 Troubleshooting
Make sure you have properly configured the KN-302 for each network protocol you are using, i.e., Novell,
AppleTalk, and TCP/IP.
• Use the Konica Network Management Utility to enable the protocols that you are using with
KN-302.
Novell
• For Novell, make sure you configure all KN-302 printers usingPCONSOLE.
You need to configure each printer you want to use.
AppleTalk
• For AppleTalk, make sure the KN-302 printer(s) are listed in Chooser.
This printer appears as the KN3#<Serial number> 1 in Chooser (unless you changed it).
All Protocols
• Check the KN-302 status page to make sure your network protocol is enabled.
• Check the KN-302 status page to make sure there is no error message.
If there is an error page, follow the instructions on the page to make your corrections and then try
printing again.
Troubleshooting 6-9
Troubleshooting
Novell Protocol
It is recommended that you first run the Konica Network Management Utility for Windows to try and
troubleshoot your NetWare problem. If you still cannot resolved the problem, then go through the checklist
below.
Print Server
• Check that the print Server name is entered correctly as KN3_<serial number>
• If the printer is serviced by more than one Print Server make sure the print jobs are directed
correctly through PCONSOLE.
Printer
• Check print queue assignment to be sure that print queues are assigned ONLY to the Print Server
printers; otherwise print jobs will go to other network printers.
• Check the PCONSOLE configuration to be sure the KN-302 printer(s) are assigned in
PCONSOLE to the printer type REMOTE OTHER/UNKNOWN.
• If you are printing graphics that may require two minutes or longer to print out, increase the
timeout using NetWare's PRINTCON or CAPTURE utility.
NOTE: If the PCONSOLE settings are correct, the connection between the printer and the network may have been broken. Turn
the printer off and wait for a status message that indicates the printer is Not Connected (using PCONSOLE). When printer power
is resumed the status should change to Waiting for Job.
6-10 Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
Novell File Server Checklist
• First, check to be sure the File Server has enough Hard Disk space and is up and running.
• Use PCONSOLE to verify that the correct File Server is associated with the Print Server.
• If the KN-302 loses its connection to the file server, it can take approximately five to ten minutes
to reconnect. No action is required, since it will automatically try to reconnect on its own.
• If the connection is not made after a reasonable amount of time, you should check the other error
conditions listed in this chapter to help troubleshoot the problem.
• Be sure you have Supervisor/Administrator rights to configure the Print Server using PCONSOLE.
• From any workstation, run NetWare's COMCHECK to verify that the File Server and the Print
Server are communicating.
• Make sure the network is loaded on every workstation that is trying to access Print Server printers.
See Novell NetWare documentation.
• Make sure the workstation's programs are set up to print to the Print Server printer; and you are
using the connect printer driver.
• Verify that the workstation is connected to the correct print queue by printing a file.
• Make sure the print queues assigned to the Print Server printers are not assigned to other network
printers.
• Use PRINTCON or CAPTURE to set a longer print job timeout. A setting of two minutes or more
is recommended for printing graphics.

KN-302 Configuration Checklist
Workstation > Queue > File Server > Print Server > Printer
• Using the MAP browser from the workstation, look under Protocols and Protocol Status to check
the Print Server status, or to display the server's queue status.
• Using PCONSOLE from the workstation, direct the print jobs to the correct queues, then check to
see if the print job is in the queue. Use PCONSOLE to be sure you correctly configured any
devices you may have changed or added.
• Make sure the Print Server name is entered correctly as KN3_<serial number>. If you changed
the name using the MAP browser, be sure to change the name in PCONSOLE to make the
change effective.
• PCONSOLE Version 1.0 cannot be used to configure the Print Server. To upgrade PCONSOLE,
contact Novell.
• Use the MAP browser to access the Konica Printer Management System and check the Uniport
configuration. If this port is being used as an output port, it must be enabled to receive print jobs.
• Check to see if the Print Server is configured for the file server. If it is not, use PCONSOLE to
configure it.
• Use the MAP browser to access the Konica Printer Management System and update the password
stored in the Print Server. The password assigned to the Print Server through PCONSOLE must
match the one assigned through MAP.
• Use PCONSOLE to verify that print jobs are being sent to the Print Server printer. Be sure the
print jobs are in the print queue and are waiting to be printed. To check this, PCONSOLE must be
in the Remote Printer mode.

UNIX (TCP/IP)
Normally, the KN-302 will work transparently in a UNIX TCP/IP environment. At this time, the following
UNIX versions and hardware platforms are supported:
More platforms and versions are being added all the time. If you are having difficulty printing, first make
sure you followed the installation procedures in Chapter 5, TCP/IP Configuration. Briefly, these steps are:
1. Configure the host by adding a node name and the assigned IP address to the local hosts database to each
host that will spool jobs directly to the Print Server.
2. Configure the KN-302 IP address using the MAP utility, Bootp Lite, rarp, or ping.
Finally, if you are still experiencing difficulties, please contact the Konica Digital Lab or Technical Support.
Different platforms, version, and network combinations sometimes require analysis by our technicians
before we can recommend a solution.

Assigning Multiple File Servers
Assign multiple file servers to the KN-302 print server using NetWare's PCONSOLE utility during initial
installation or afterward.
• During initial installation, assign multiple file servers to the KN-302 print server as part of the
software installation.
• Or, after initial installation is completed, use PCONSOLE to assign file servers to the KN-302
print server. To enable the print server to service the newly assigned file servers, turn the KN-302
print server power off, then on.
STEP 1
(a) Go to each selected File Server and create a KN-302 print server as described in Section 2,
Installation.
STEP 2
(a) When the Print Server menu displays, press the [INS] key to display the new Print Server
Name entry box.
(b) Type in the name of the KN-302 print server using the serial number printed on the label
located on the KN-302 board.
STEP 3
(a) After typing in the KN-302 print server name, press Enter. The Print Server Information
menu appears.
(c) Choose Printer Configuration on the Print Server Configuration menu. A list of printers
appears.
(d) Assign the KN-302 to Printer 0. After you assign each printer a number, a Printer Configura
tion menu appears for the printer.
(e) Under the field name TYPE, select Remote Other/Unknown as the printer type.
(f) After you configure each printer, save your changes (when you receive the prompt) and escape
back to the Print Server Configuration menu.
Appendix B-3
Assigning Multiple File Servers
(b) Select the appropriate printer from the list of Defined Printers. The screen that appears should
be blank for the initial installation procedure.
(c) Press [INS] key to display a list of Available Queues for your printer.
(d) Choose a queue and assign a priority level to the queue (from 1 to 10), then press Enter. The
queue appears on the previous screen.
(f) When you finish assigning queues, escape back to the Print Server Configuration menu.
STEP 5
(a) Select users or user groups to be notified if a problem occurring with a print job is sent to a
KN-302 printer. (For details, refer to Step 5 of Set Up Notify Options for KN-302 printer(s) in
Section 3.)
If this procedure is part of the initial KN-302 installation, then you are finished. If this procedure is
being used after initial KN-302 installation, then go to Step 6.
STEP 6
Power down the KN-302 unit and power it back on. This will attach the file servers you assigned to
the KN-302 print server.
When power is turned on during the initial installation or any time afterward, the KN-302 will log into the
network and specify a password for all file servers assigned to it. If no password is found, no password to
login will be specified.

Jumper Settings
Normally, you do not need to change the jumpers on the KN-302 board. Only in a rare case would you find
that the jumper configuration does not work with your network configuration.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT change any of these jumpers unless you have the technical knowledge to do
so. Any changes to the jumper setting may cause your KN-302 to perform improperly or not at all.
To change specific jumper settings, see procedures below and on the following pages.
Step 1: Turn off the Printer Controller Power and unplug the power cord.
Step 3: Locate the Jumpers on the KN-302 board. (See the KN-302 board illustration on the
following page.)
Step 5: Reinsert the KN-302 board into the PCI Bus slot of the printer controller.
Step 6: Plug in the power cord, then turn on power to the Printer Controller.

Changing Jumper Settings
The Reset to Factory Default OP2 jumper allows you to force the KN-302 back to factory default settings
When you change this jumper, the parameters altered by any administrative programs will be restored to
factory default values, losing any special configuration information that may have been entered.
The KN-302 is shipped with the jumper set to NORM (OP2 set to pins 2 and 3) for normal customer
configuration.
To restore the KN-302 factory default setting, you must change the jumper to FACT (for factory default) by
setting OP2 to pins 1 and 2, power up the KN-302, power down the KN-302, then change the jumper back
to NORM.
See the following illustration.
Appendix B-7
Windows 95 Peer Printing
Windows 95 Peer Printing allows Windows 95 workstations to print to KN-302 printers.
The main features of the Windows 95 Peer Printing are as follows:
• Runs on Windows 95 workstation out of the box.
• Runs on networks which have no NetWare file server.
• Implements peer-to-peer bidirectional printing between
Windows 95 workstations and KN-302 printers.
• Setup is easy. Users can configure network printers the same way they configure printers directly
attached to their workstations.
3. Click on Run.
The CD should run automatically while installing ACROBAT READER or while accessing the
table of contents for ACROBAT READER.
4. From the Run screen, select the Setup file from the CD-ROM that you placed in your CD drive.
Should the CD not run automatically, execute the file OSICOM16.EXE for the Windows 3.11
system; or execute the file OSICOM32.EXE for the Windows 95/NT/98 system.
5. Click on OK.
If setup detects a previous installation of the PeerToPeer Driver, it will prompt you to have Setup delete
the old driver and continue the installation procedure.
To use a KN-302 printer, use the Add Printer Wizard in the Windows 95 Printers folder. KN-302-95
printers will appear as local printers.
