Question 2

The frame structure shown on the figure 2.0 which is the support structure for a hoist located at the point of application of load W. The supports at A and B are completely fixed. Other connections are welded. Assuming the structure to be modeled using the minimum number of the beam axial element.

a) How many elements are needed? The element can be defined as a small domain which is in order to solve the boundary value problem in term of the displacements and the force of the nodes on the element. And when it related with this case, there were eight elements which is needed for the figure 2.0 which is from the text book of the Fundamental of Finite Element Analisis where the page are 128 to 129. b) What is the size of the assembled global stiffness matrix? The global stiffness matrix can be defined as an assembly of the element stiffness matrix that relates the displacements of the nodes where it can be defined as the points on the structure at which displacement and rotational are found or prescribed. Accordingly to the size of the assembled global stiffness matrix which is consider with the nodes that involved in the system where in this case are related with the figure 2.0 were there are 2 nodes with 7 elements. In order on getting the size of the assembled global stiffness matrix, the element are multiply with the same value which and then the values obtained are multiply with same values which is the obtained values in the matrix form of ( ). c) What are the constraint(boundary) conditions? The constraint or boundary condition also can be defined as the condition of specified values of the field variables or related variable such as derivative on the boundaries of the field. in this case which is the figure 2.0 are shown the boundary condition are on the fixed wall.

d) What is the size of the reduced global stiffness matrix after application of the constraint condition? After application of the constraint condition on the system, the reduction will occur on the size of the global stiffness matrix which is from the global stiffness matrix which is form of ( where the matrix value are( ) to be in form of with the matrix value of ( ). Technically this situation occur because of and which is the number of independent boundary and interface condition. e) Assuming a finite element solution are obtained for this problem, what steps could be taken to judge the accuracy of the solution? The steps that could be taken to judge the accuracy of the solution after assuming a finite element solution were obtained for the given problem is the convergence of numerical method such as the FEM which is by no means assurance that the convergence is to the correct solution. Other than that, by using the finite element technique which is must examined the solution analytically in term of numerical convergence, reasonableness, whether the physicallaws of the problem are satisfied and whether the discontinuities in the value of derived variables across element boundaries are reasonable.
