ACTIVITY 1 WARM-UP PRE-LISTENINGCOMPETENCES: 1. Ss will be able to speak about Barack Obama and his election campaign CLASS MANAGEMENT: INDIVIDUAL, TEACHER-STUDENTS INTERACTION AIDS: Obamas picture TIME: 5 PROCEDURE: The teacher announces the objectives of the lesson and shows a picture of Barack Obama and asks the students if they know the man in the picture. The teacher writes down the title the date on the white board .The teacher has a free conversation with students and they may be asked questions like: Have you been following the American election campaign? Have you heard any extracts from Barack Obamas speeches? If you have, did you hear them in English, or in Romanian? Did he have an impact on you? Why? Why not? The students answer freely.

PROCEDURE: The teacher then announces that the students are going to hear the final section of the speech Obama made when he was elected President. The teacher distributes handouts to students asking them to match the words and phrases in pairs. The teacher checks their answers.

ACTIVITY 3 TRANSITION TO THE NEW TOPIC -WHILE -LISTENINGCOMPETENCES: 1. Ss will be able to number some ideas heard in Obamas victory speech CLASS MANAGEMENT: PAIR WORK, TEACHER-STUDENTS INTERACTION AIDS: COMPUTER, VIDEO PROJECTOR, HANDOUTS TIME: 15 PROCEDURE: The teacher asks the students to listen to the final section of Obamas speech and to number the ideas in the order they hear them. Teacher and students check the order .Then the teacher asks students to listen again and note down clues in the speech that helped them decide. The teacher checks the students. ACTIVITY 4 DEVELOPMENT COMPETENCES: 1. Ss will be able to scan a text and find the meaning of some phrases 2. PROCEDURE: The teacher gives students paragraphs of the transcript of Obamas speech and asks them to scan the text and find phrases with a certain meaning (in pairs). The teacher checks the students. Then the teacher announces that Obama uses a lot of literary devices to have an impact on the listener. The teacher divides the students into groups and asks them to scan the text and find the literary devices he uses (alliteration, repetition, rhythm, rhyme, parallel structures, direct appeal to the listener, including the listener). Teacher and students check the answers. ACTIVITY 5 DEVELOPMENT COMPETENCES: 1. Ss will be able to find parallel structures in the text

They are also divided in groups. AIDS: handouts TIME: 5 PROCEDURE: The teacher asks students some questions regarding Obamas speech What words would you use to describe this speech? Depressing, hopeful, inspiring, exhausting, convincing, energizing..? Were you shocked when you heard he was elected president? Why yes? Why not? Do you think that the Americans were touched by his speech? Were you touched by his speech? Why yes? Why not? - Students answer freely. The teacher appreciates the students performance and asks students to fill in feedback files about the lesson, the teachers performance.
