Dear Fellow Youth Leader: Warmest Greetings from the Union! The NATIONAL UNION OF STUDENTS OF THE PHILIPPINES (NUSP) is the nationwide alliance of more than 650 student councils/governments/federations/unions committed to the advancement of students democratic rights and welfare. As such, the Union has earned the recognition of being th e premier national student center in the country. We invite you and your student/council government to participate the annual leadership training, PALIHAN 2014: Leadership and Student Council Elections Training on February 1, 2014 at the NU Social Hall, National University from 7:00am 5:30pm. PALIHAN 2014 is geared at leadership and skills training, where a series of forum and classroom discussion will be administered. BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND PROJECT RATIONALE PALIHAN is the annual Student Council Election Training and Leadership Workshop spearheaded by the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP). PALIHAN primarily aims to gather students and student leaders aspiring to run for office in order to represent the studentry in their corresponding student councils, governments or federations. This workshop is also open to incumbent officers and members of student councils, governments, federations, COMELEC, political parties and organizations. The workshop will provide forum and classroom discussions, leadership and skills trainings, and arts and culture workshops to imbue principled leadership to student leaders and participants. Palihan is a Filipino word for anvil, an iron block on which heated metal is shaped by hitting it with a hammer. The world palihan has taken a new definition in the contextual fields of literature and politics. Palihan means a collective workshop and/or training intended to hone an individuals skills and capabilities. Thus, NUSPs PALIHAN is purposive of honing the leadership skills of students via a student council election training.

OBJECTIVES 1. STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION TRAINING (a) Gather students and student leaders aspiring to run for elective posts in their school student councils, governments or federations; (b) Undergo leadership workshops and trainings; (c) Undergo arts and culture workshops; and (d) Tackle current student and peoples concerns. 2. GENUINE STUDENT LEADERSHIP (a) Unleash individual potentials; (b) Promote principled and democratic pro-student leadership; (c) Promote holistic development; (d) Build unity among student representatives and imbue a sense of responsive collective leadership; and (e) Inculcate the value of genuine student leadership geared towards the promotion and advancement of student and youth rights and welfare. 3. NATIONALIST LEADERSHIP (a) Uphold the task of the students and the youth to protect and promote the value of nationalism and social responsibility; (b) Imbue a nationalist and pro-people perspective in the discourse of nation building; and (c) Coordinate with different sectors in the community in the aspiration for genuine social change.

BENEFICIARIES The discussions, trainings and workshops, plus contact expansion during the event, will benefit participants with a deeper and broader knowledge of leadership and student council management. The said trainings will also extend to their constituents and their nearby communities.
