The New York State Museum is seeking to fill a Museum Scientist 4 position.

supervision of the Director of Research and Collections, the Museum Scientist 4 will serve as the New York State Geologist, a non-regulatory position designated by the Board of Regents. The Museum Scientist 4 curates the State Museums sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock core collection, performs and disseminates related research, supervises subordinate collections and research staff, and contributes to exhibition, public, and educational programming. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs statutory duties, including reviews and approvals of natural gas and liquid petroleum gas underground storage reservoirs; Provides general oversight of the Museums geologic mapping program including StateMap, and fulfills other advisory and educational duties and activities associated with this position; Directs a well-established program of geologic field and laboratory research. Designs specific research strategies and conducts research focused on New York State that meets the highest professional standards. This research will include utilizing the Museums rock core collection. Oversees the development of grant and other funding proposals to solicit support for research, curatorial and educational programs, with an emphasis on Federal agency funding opportunities; Curates the Museums rock core collection; maintains and builds the intellectual integrity of the collection, expanding the Museum's holdings according to Museum and discipline standards, and ensuring proper physical care of this collection; Prepares research findings and research reports for presentations and public programming including participating in the Museums summer earth-science field school for teachers and administrators in K-12 institutions as well as other educational events and for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles and monographs and/or books; Participates in the development of Museum public programs, and may take responsibility for their implementation, as required; participates in exhibit planning; educational programming, develops methods and carries out means of communicating research to the Museum's diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not traditionally represented in museums; develops public and educational programs to meet the museum oriented and/or community oriented goals of the Museum. Minimum Qualifications: A bachelors degree and five years of professional experience in geology; OR a masters degree in geology and four years of professional experience in geology; OR a doctorate degree in geology and two years of professional experience in geology. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position will be required to participate in an

internal peer-review process. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in geology with extensive experience in eastern North American geology, extensive fieldwork experience in sedimentary or metamorphic/igneous terrains, laboratory skills in geochemistry/petrology, proven experience in collections care and management, a well-established record of peer-reviewed publications in geology, involvement in public and life-long educational programs, demonstrated ability to obtain outside funding through grants and/or other sources, and administrative experience including professional staff supervision, budgeting, human resource planning and program planning. Analytical skills in geochemistry and/or sedimentary petrography are required. Time period of research specialization is open but should complement existing staff expertise. *Leads to a maximum salary of $100,822 based on annual performance advances.
