Lines of Communication

Upward Communication - Emanates from subordinates and goes upward. This is usually in the form of feedback to show the extent to which downward communication has been received, accepted, and implemented. Examples are discussions between subordinates and superiors, grievance procedures, written reports, incident reports, and statistical reports. Downward Communication - The traditional line of communication is from superior to subordinate which may pass through various levels of management. It includes policies, rules and regulations, memoranda, handbooks, interviews, job descriptions, and performance appraisal. Horizontal Communication It flows between peers, personnel or departments on the same level. It is most used frequently in the form of endorsements, between shifts, nursing rounds, journal meetings and conferences, or referrals between departments or services. Outward Communication It deals with information that flows from the caregivers to the patients, their families, relatives, visitors and the community. Delegation Head Nurse to Staff Nurse Activities That May be Delegated Checking of the patients chart, E-cart, instruments and supplies Assist and conduct training programs for the nurses who are new and need help. Solve any issues related to the patients. Direct contact with the patients and formulate nursing diagnosis regarding their health problems

Accompany the doctors when they go on their rounds to check the patients where they present the reports collected by them. To maintain the hygiene in the unit and make sure that the patients are provided with enough facilities and entertain all types of complaints from the patients. Making job orders for equipment that needs immediate repairs and maintenance. Activities That May Not Be Delegated Manage all the administrative duties of the departments which they are assigned to work in. Schedule shifts for the nurses and assign duties to them. To collect work reports from all the nurses regarding their day-to-day activities and maintains a record of them. Inventory management. Maintain a log of the entries of the patients in their wards and their health reports. Observe patients' conditions, measuring and recording food and liquid intake and output and vital signs, and report changes to professional staff. Coordination with the Laboratory Service Requests for laboratory examinations are forwarded to the laboratory unit. Medical Technologists usually come to the units for routine blood examinations. Nurses should direct them to where the patients are located and provide the necessary assistance. Specimens such as sputum, feces, urine or those collected after a special procedure should be properly labeled and sent to the laboratory. Coordination with the Radiology Service Requests for X-ray examinations are likewise forwarded to the x-ray service for proper scheduling and specific instructions. Coordination with the Dietary Service Nurses are responsible for forwarding the diet list of the patients in the units, taking into consideration the prescribed special diets, the patients idiosyncrasies for food, allergies or food preferences, and religious restrictions. Patients needing special instructions in their diets are referred to the nutritionist for counseling. Coordination with the Medical Records Service Nurses are responsible for the accurate documentation and completeness of the patients charts, including their safety and confidentiality. Coordination with the Pharmacy Service Policies regarding the procurement of drugs are formulated jointly by the Administrative, Medical and Nursing Services and the Pharmacy. These policies are circulated to all nursing units for notation and guidance of all concerned. Coordination with the Billing Department Patient billing module handles all types of billing processes in the long run. It works in coordination with many other modules such as inpatient, outpatient, registration etc. This module seamlessly integrates with financial accounting module to consolidate patients overall billing information. This hospital billing system helps in automatic posting of charges pertaining to various services including lab test, food and beverage, bed charges etc. It is a hospital billing management system is a flexible solution for efficient billing without manual errors and time consumption. The module is highly customizable to adjust to clients unique needs. It is capable of handling and recording various payment types such as cash or credit, partial or full payment and dues or defaulters.
