Chapter 1: System Requirements

CAM2 Measure X Update Training Version 1.0 - June 2005

General Overview
Graphics/CAD Engine
The Graphics/CAD Engine is the major change to the software between version 4.0 and X1. The native file format has changed from the ACIS (*.sat) file to two file types. The FARO CAD data (*.fcm) contains the information from a CAD file (i.e. IGES, VDA, STEP). The FARO CAM2 Measure X (*.fce) contains the measurement data. This allows multiple parts to reference the same CAD file. The FARO CAD Engine is developed in FARO Europe and has been in use for more than 10 years.

AutoRecover
CAM2 Measure X saves a backup file every 10 minutes. In the event of a system crash you will be prompted to recover a lost file. This is the only prompt to recover the file.

3-2-1 Changes
The 3-2-1 Coordinate System allows the use of a line versus of a plane for the primary axis. The first selection in the coordinate system is the primary datum. For a turbine or a spinning shaft the primary datum is often measured as a cylinder. Selecting the cylinder will construct a coordinate system where the primary plane is perpendicular to the cylinder.

Objective - There are four methods that can be used to inspect a CAD surface. This practical section will show the student how to use each method to check a part to a CAD surface.

Using a DRO allows you to pass a Probe/SMR over the surface to see the surface error in a readout. No measurement data is taken with this method. The Home In point can be used to check specific locations on the CAD model. The Inspect Surface point can be used to check random locations on the CAD surface. The last method, Scanning and Comparing to a CAD Surface allows you to create cross sectional polylines to compare to the CAD model. Inspect Surface Point

The Inspect Surface point allows you to take random measurements over the surface of a part. Each time you take a point the software finds the closest point on the CAD surface and compensates the measured point towards the CAD surface point. The results show how far the measurement is to the CAD surface. Graphical Results The GRAPHICAL RESULTS parameter was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Sets the default results box. No will display the HTML results that allow you to change the label, set nominals, and tolerances. Yes displays the deviations of the feature in a bar graph. Labels, tolerances and nominals can not be set in this mode. Features are automatically accepted in this mode. The results dialog box will remain on the screen until the command is canceled or another feature is measured. Inspect Surface Only will use the bar graph results for Inspect Surface Points, all other features will use the HTML results.

FIGURE 7-23 Graphical Results Windows

Compensation Point Mode Allows you to take one compensation point for multiple Inspect Surface or Surface Edge points. When the preference is toggled to Global you need to measure a compensation point (BACK button or HOME key) to record the compensation location. Once the compensation point is recorded CAM2 Measure X will continue to use the same compensation point for each measurement. This allows you to quickly measure points without having to compensate each point and increase the inspection time of a part. If no compensation point is digitized, CAM2 Measure X will use the Alignment origin. When the preference is set to Feature End (default) you will need to compensate each point separately.

Scans Compared to a CAD Surface

All Cross Sectional Scans and 3D Freehand polylines can be used to compare the surface of a part to a CAD surface. This will determine the GD&T Profile of Line or Profile of a Surface. The polyline is compensated using the Surface Normal vector nearest the point on the polyline. Each point of the polyline is compared to the closest point on the CAD surface. Moving the NOMINAL WHISKER command into REVIEW FEATURES will give you a graphical representation of the curvature of the part to the CAD surface in addition to the normal results data. NOTE: If the Surface vectors of the CAD model are not normalized, or pointing the same direction, then it is possible for some sections of the polyline to offset in the opposite direction of the CAD Surface. The surface vectors will need to be normalized in a CAD program prior to exporting, translating and adding to CAM2 Measure X.

Scan Measurement Preference

Save Scans as Features The SAVE SCANS AS FEATURES preference was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. When value is set to Yes CAM2 Measure X will save each polyline as a feature in REVIEW FEATURES and compensate, or offset, the cross section to the surface. Set the value to No for Reverse Engineering and Yes for comparing the polyline to the CAD surfaces. Lines Drawn while Scanning The LINES DRAWN WHILE SCANNING preference was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. When value is set to Yes you will see the polyline draw as each point is added. Setting the value to No increases the processing speed allowing for more points to be scanned. Scan Line Creation The SCAN LINE CREATION preference was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. This sets the order of the points in a polyline. Sorted allows CAM2 Measure X to resort the polyline so that the points are ordered by distance. This will create a smooth curve and is ideal when reverse engineering. Unsorted creates the polyline by the order that the point was taken. This is ideal if you are tracking the location of the Probe/SMR over time. 71

Readings and Whiskers

Readings and Whiskers located in the REVIEW FEATURES dialog box and allow you to graphically display the deviation of each reading on a feature. Readings Check box The READINGS check box was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Displays each reading of a feature on the screen. The READINGS will show the location of each point used in a feature. The readings are color coded based upon the feature tolerance (Green = In Tolerance less than 75 percent. Yellow = In Tolerance greater than 75 percent. Red = Out of Tolerance). Form Whisker Check box The FORM WHISKER check box was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Displays each readings Deviation from Fit on the screen. Use the Form Whisker to show the deviation of a feature and see the flatness of a plane, or the roundness of a circle. The error is color coded by the Form tolerance (Green = In Tolerance less than 75 percent. Yellow = In Tolerance greater than 75 percent. Red = Out of Tolerance). Nominal Whiskers Check box Replaces the DIMENSION < WHISKERS < NOMINAL WHISKER and WHISKERS commands. Use this check box to visually see the deviation between a feature and the associated nominal.

Chapter 8: Define Device Position Practical

Objective - In this exercise align to a CAD file, relocate the Device, and realign using the Define Device Position command.

Device Position
Set Active The SET ACTIVE command was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Sets the active measurement device, or device location. With multiple devices, you can choose which device to measure the part. This allows you to switch between measurement devices in a single drawing file. Clear The CLEAR command was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Sets the active device to None, or no measurement device. This command should only be used for advanced applications. New The NEW command was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Creates a new device position in the drawing file. This allows you to add an additional device to the measurement file. This command should be used along with the DEFINE command. Define The DEFINE command was new in CAM2 Measure, version 4.0. Aligns a device to the measurement file. This command can be used to add a second measurement device to the existing drawing, or to align the same device to a new location within the drawing. The MOVE DEVICE POSITION adds readings to the features used in the command, which causes the features to move from their original position. The DEFINE Device Position uses new features. The MOVE DEVICE POSITION must use measured features; the DEFINE DEVICE POSITION can use Measured or Nominal features to align.

Tubing Part Preferences

FIGURE 10-1 Tubing Preferences

Tubing Turn Direction - Clockwise or Counterclockwise. This preference will be based upon the tube-bending machine. When the machine turns the tube it can be rotated in the clockwise or counterclockwise (default) direction. Changing this preference will affect the nominal construction and measurement report. Tubing Turn Angle - Relative or Absolute. This preference will be based upon the bending machine. When the machine bends the angle the bend is referenced to the first segment (absolute) or to the last segment (relative default). Changing this preference will affect the nominal construction and measurement report. Break Point Type - Intersection or Segment End. This preference will construct the intersection points from the intersection of the cylinder segments (Intersection - default) or the intersections of the cylinders with the toroid (Segment End). Measure Tube Bends - All Bends or Required Bends. This preference determines if the toroid of the tube will be measured. When set to All Bends, you will measure the cylinders and bends. When set to Required Bends (default), only bend angles of 180 degrees will be measured.

Measure Tube
Round Tube
The MEASURE ROUND TUBE command links a series of plane, cylinder and torus commands to construct a single round tube. End B is the first feature 109
Chapter 10: Round Tubing

CAM2 Measure X Update Training Version 1.0 - June 2005 to be measured and will be measured as a plane. End A is the last feature to be measured and is also measured as a plane.

Rectangular Tube
The MEASURE RECTANGULAR TUBE command links a series of plane commands together to construct a single rectangular tube.

Tube Fitting
The MEASURE TUBE FITTING command allows you to design a tube by measuring points in space to define the tube segments. A plane and cylinder at the ends of the tube is required. The plane and cylinder are used to determine the starting and ending points of the tube as well as the angle to the surface.

Construct Tube
Enter XYZ
Round The XYZ values of the breakpoints, tube diameter and bend radius of the tube can be entered into a list to create a tube. Rectangular The XYZ values of the breakpoints, tube width, tube height and bend radius of the tube can be entered into a list to create a tube.

Enter PTB
Round The Pull (y), Turn (B), Bend (C), tube diameter and bend radius of the can be entered into a list to create a tube. Rectangular The Pull (y), Turn (B), Bend (C), tube width, tube height and bend radius of the can be entered into a list to create a tube.

From Features
A tube can be constructed from measured, constructed or nominal geometry. Two planes, a series of cylinders and torids are selected to construct a tube.

Breakpoints
The breakpoints of a constructed or nominal tube can be added as separate features for use in alignment, construction or dimension commands.

Importing Data
Import CSV Select a comma-delimited file that contains the XYZ or PTB information for a tube. This command will populate the list with the Pull, Turn, Bend, or XYZ value, bend radius and diameter information. The format for this command should be: Tube diameter 01, X, Y, Z, 0, 0, 0, 0 02, X, Y, Z, P, T, B, Bend Radius 03, X, Y, Z, P, T, B, Bend Radius ##, X, Y, Z, P, T, B, 0 NOTE: If the CONSTRUCT > TUBE > ENTER XYZ is used, only the X, Y, Z and Bend Radius information is needed. The PTB fields can be left blank. The X, Y, Z fields are not required for the ENTER PTB command. Import BendPro Select a tube from the BendPro database. This command will populate the list with the Pull, Turn, Bend, Bend Radius and diameter information that was used to create the tube. From Polyline Select a polyline from the CAD view and the XYZ breakpoint list will be populated with the vertices of the polyline.

Tube Reporting
Tube Correction Report
TubeBendCorrection is a report format specifically designed for calculating tube spring back. The Pull Turn Bend of the measured tube will be compared to the Pull Turn Bend of the nominal tube and a correction report will be 111
Chapter 10: Round Tubing

CAM2 Measure X Update Training Version 1.0 - June 2005 generated. The correction report provides you with Pull Turn Bend information that will output a tube that will match the nominal.

Important Topics - Round Tubing

The Tubing Preferences are based upon the settings of the tube bending machine. The tubing bend radius can be measured for each bend or entered (default) for the tube. If a bend angle is 180 degrees you must measure the bend as a torus. The tubing commands can be used in the Learn/Execute program to create part programs.
