Evaluation The aim for the Unit F631 artefact was to produce 9 key frames and a script, that represented a clear narrative of my film, The Rise. This was focusing on the themes of bravery taken from the representations of teen protagonists in my textual analysis of Attack the Block(2011) and Super 8(2011). For my creative artefact, I focused on creating the ending sequence. My photos represented up to two minutes in duration when in action and had to flow from one frame to another. The protagonist, Jessie, is confronting the antagonist, Lenz, in a concluding last scene, following the restore of the natural equilibrium, followed by Todorovs theory. When using the camera, I took close consideration of mise-en-scene, particularly sticking to the codes and conventions identified in my artefact, such as setting. The regional identity seen in Attack the Block mainly represented Urban youths from South London. This was conveyed through their dialogue and use of slang. Their costume consisted of hooded jumpers and trainers, and their neighbourhood was based around an estate, which I linked with to use in my location and costume for my characters. Each character dressed slightly different to distinguish their personality, for example, my protagonist, Jessie, had her hair in a plait, to show the audience that she is girly and innocent as a person. In contrast, Ambers hair was loose and frizzy. This reflected her natural wild and crazy characteristics. The first scene was set inside a flat building and worked around a lift, which was also inspired by the film Attack the Block, which I highlighted as an important factor because of its motif in the film. It was important that my frames had every key moment included and so altogether I took up to 100 photos and selected the best ones that conveyed the action. Following the codes and conventions of Super 8, the denotation of the dim lighting in the lift connotates evil and danger, reflecting the my antagonists character. This was to highlight the tension built between the two opposing characters in the confined space, linking to the binary oppositions theory taken from Levi Strauss of good VS evil or Male VS Woman. This was similar to the relationship and tension built between Joe and the Alien, the lighting grew dimmer as the silence grew larger. The lighting in both film

text were important as they complimented the themes of bravery and danger. To enhance verisimilitude within the codes and conventions, I organised a makeup artist to work with my actors, to get the extra details included, so that my audience would find it easier and more interesting to understand the narrative. This was something included in my planning materials in order to boost my work and was beneficial in the end, as each actor looked believably injured, reflecting the action genre. Each character had their makeup designed to create the bruises and the cuts on their faces. The script played a large part of my planning materials, as it helped me to imagine and set the scene in my mind. I was certain that it would be filmed within the lift and therefore I focused on camerawork and how it would include levels and different angles to give my audience a perspective from many views, such as high and low angled shots. For example, low angled shot of Jessie illustrates her power by the appearance of her higher level in comparison to the camera. The script also allowed me to craft the language and behaviour of the actors; slang was used similar to the dialogue between the boys within the contemporary texts in which I used to highlight their race and class, which links to Stuart Halls theory. The planning also included organising the dates for filming and allowing my actors time to learn about their characters and what they would be doing on set. I was confident about their performance on the day as I was familiar with their work from the screen test notes. This was an important factor in my planning because I had an idea about my characters and the actors had to portray the similar traits that I concluded from the textual analysis, in which they did and made it successful. As a result, I think my artefact was successful in achieving the aims because the narrative was clear and represented the themes identified from my artefact. This was seen through the codes and conventions I focused on, particularly the setting and costume inspired by the two contemporary films. The similar themes of bravery and danger were met in my key frames, which I consider to be successful in my work because it was linked.
