D R . F. B R U C E W I L L I A M S PASTORAL MESSAGE
I greet you in the strong Name of Jesus Christ! Bates Memorial, by the grace of God, you've done it again! This Annual Report seeks to highlight, in a meaningful way, what you were able to accomplish for the Kingdom through your time, talents and tithes in 2013.

The theme for 2013 was Moving Forward Through Participation! And because so many stepped up to participate - faithfully giving of their time, talents and tithes - souls were saved, the hungry were fed, naked were clothed, homeless were helped, the prisoner was visited (and even transported to our worship), the sick were ministered to, the bereaved were comforted, children were mentored, youth were encouraged, students were sent to school or supported while in school, social justice causes were advocated (like supporting the restoration of voting rights for ex offenders), couples were empowered, families were strengthened, new properties were purchased for expanded ministry and missionary work was done abroad. We married, baptized, dedicated babies, counseled troubled hearts, the Lord was worshipped, God was gloried and the list goes on and on! 2013 was an exciting and fruitful year!

We are grateful to God for all you disciples who stepped up to help us edify the church and impact the community and world for the kingdom of God. This year, in 2014, the theme is Moving Forward Through Dedication! We are dedicated to excellence in ministry and are always seeking to move forward in progressive ways to more effectively and efficiently minister to both the church and community. So, this year we put our annual report on line for you to peruse at your convenience. We also changed our Vision Night to Vision Weekend so that we can creatively expose our entire congregation to our ministry accomplishments and vision. A great big thanks goes out to all of the staff and volunteers who helped make this annual report possible. With or new theme in 2014 we expect the disciples at Bates to be even more dedicated to ministry involvement to impact our community in unprecedented ways. Through deeper dedication we will continue to worship God, make disciples and impact our community for Jesus Christ, after all, we are Changed People, Changing the World!

Associate Ministers-Rev. Sandra Moore What were your ministry goals for 2013? The goals for the ministry in 2013 were to upgrade the way the Fellowship functions. This was to be done by developing and implementing a formalized orientation process for new members entering the associate ministers fellowship, updating the associate ministers handbook and establishing a monthly plan to better develop and prepare the associate ministers for ministry at Bates & elsewhere. Were you able to accomplish or exceed your goals for 2013? If so, how? If not, what will you do in 2014 to make sure that you accomplish or exceed your goals for 2013? Many of the goals were achieved while some are still being worked on. In 2014 there are plans to continue addressing those goals and reaching them. What activities did your ministry facilitate or participate in for 2013? The associate ministers ministry meets monthly to develop spiritually and personally. This is done in a variety of ways. Lectures are conducted and discussions and dialogue follows. One such topic in 2013 was the issue of justice following the Trayvon Martin case and verdict. As a result of the discussions, the associates were given the assignment to read the book "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander. Also, representatives from Simmons College came to present opportunities available for the associates to further develop themselves and further their education. The associates had fellowship outings as well in order to socialize with one another. How did your ministry make an impact in the life of the church and/or community in 2013? The associate ministers ministry is active in various areas which impact the life of the church. Some are involved in the education ministry, and teach weekly in life school which helps disciples grow spiritually. Some are active with the Children's ministry, serving the children and preaching at their worship services. Many are active weekly as they lead worship at weekend services. In the community, some associates are serving with the Prison ministry and going regularly to various correctional facilities. What are specific goals for your ministry in order for your ministry to make an impact in 2014? In 2014, the associates ministry will continue to serve and develop their gifts to be a blessing to the body. Bates Bookstore -John Randolph , Rev. Carla Anderson Our ministry goals for 2013 was to earn $30,000 dollars in a 2013 fiscal year, continue to guide and equip members to succeed in discipleship endeavors and add more volunteers in the Bookstore The $30,000 net sales goal was lofty. We were not able to exceed that goal. We were able to greatly increase the number of volunteers in the bookstore. Also, we continue to provide excellent material to help members understand kingdom work and improving their walk with Christ. What activities did your ministry facilitate or participate in for 2013? Rev. Charles Goodman book signing Book store ministry outing to Famous Dave's Rev. Otis Moss book signing Provided material for decision counselors in their book study regarding discipleship Our purpose is to help the people of the church improve their Christian walk with Christ by providing literature for Masterlife and other various bible studies. We were able to add 10 dedicated individuals to the bookstore ministry which was a 100% increase. Our goals for 2014 will be to keep the 30,000 net sales goals. It is a very high goal, but I believe you should aim high to achieve greatness. Also, our goal is to develop a system that encourages repeat sales. (i.e. book club , incentive programs), become more integrated with other ministries of the church some the book store could be the supplier of various gift and literature needs and work on marketing incentives to bring awareness that the bookstore can help supply the needs of the church .

Couples Ministry: Pamela Simms & Elaine Huddleston Additional Ministry Positions Spiritual Leader: Rev. Eric French, Sr. Founding Members: Fred & Beverly Peterson and Vincent & Pamela Simms What were your ministry goals for 2013? To provide enrichment for marriages through topical teachings and activities that encourage married couples to connect, prioritize and focus on their spouses by setting aside time each month. Were you able to accomplish or exceed your goals for 2013? If so, how? If not, what will you do in 2014 to make sure that you accomplish or exceed your goals for 2013?Yes were able to accomplish our goals for 2013. What activities did your ministry facilitate or participate in for 2013? In January we started the year off with a message of inspiration from Rev. Chris Campbell, Pastor of Genesis United Methodist Church. He spoke on five key points of Marriage that all couples should be in tune with. In observance of the Daniel Fast the entire lunch meal was fast friendly and was greatly appreciated. In February the annual Men Can Cook dinner was held in the Fellowship Hall on February 15th. The food was very tasty and the husbands served their wives very graciously. There were 14 couples in attendance. At our meeting in March we had Rev. William Dickerson, Pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church as our guest speaker. He spoke on Building the Right Relationship between a Husband and Wife Genesis 2:24. In April we had a Date Night at Rockys in Jeffersonville, Indiana on the 20th. It was a great night of fun and good food. On May 18th, our own Pastor Williams was the speaker at our meeting. As always he provided us with a message that was enriching. In June we had the Fourth Annual Cater 2 U event and the ladies planned an afternoon luncheon by the water at Captains Quarters for their husbands. The men loved the new approach to this event and it was enjoyed by all who attended. Couples Ministry did not meet during the month of July. Many couples helped out at Vacation Bible School, by being teachers, helping out in the kitchen, arts and crafts and many other areas as needed. An opportunity to

serve together is very rewarding. In August, Bates Couples Ministry joined with First Virginia Avenue Baptist Churchs Couples Ministry group at their church for lunch and a marriage seminar. Pastor Williams was the guest speaker and her spoke on the topic of Love Conquers All 1 Corinthians 8:1-8In September Couples Ministry had its Annual Cookout on September 21st where meat was provided and each couple brought a side or dessert. We had a relaxing evening under the stars. This year the Couples Ministry group had a fall retreat in Gatlinburg, Tennessee from Oct. 4-7th. The mountains provided a lovely retreat for Couples to reconnect, relax, and relate to one another. At the end of the month many couples helped out at the Hallelujah Party. In addition to bringing candy, many operated games, served as security, help with meals and other duties. Marriages are enriched when Couples serve together. November 15th was Couples Ministry last meeting of the year. Executive Pastor, Eric French, Sr. was the speaker for this meeting. He gave a very timely message entitled, Lets Stay Together. Through scripture, and humorous presentation, we received a message that will stick with us. In December as our final activity for the year, we again helped out with the Tree of Angels event by helping to give out the gifts, directing recipients and assisting with getting them to their cars. It was a very blessed way to end the year. How did your ministry make an impact in the life of the church and/or community in 2013? As a ministry we make sure we give back by participating in many church-wide activities such as Vacation Bible School, the Hallelujah Party and Tree of Angels that provide support to the community annually. How many additional members were added to your ministry in 2013? We have added approximately 10 new couples to the ministry in 2013. What are specific goals for your ministry in order for your ministry to make an impact in 2014? We plan to continue providing support to church and community endeavors to be role-models for marriage in the community. We also will plan to provide additional opportunities for enriching marriage by providing biblically sound teaching and other activities to support spouses working and having fun together. See 2014 Calendar of Events.

Kimberly Blackford, Rev. Sandra Moore Additional Ministry Positions Associate Ministers The goal for 2013 was to strengthen the ministry, and to partner and serve with other local ministries. It was the desire of the ministry to conduct an evangelism class and work towards planning an international trip for members of Bates. Another goal was to continue to serve in New Orleans as the ministry had done in the past. Many of the goals were accomplished in 2013. In 2014, the ministry intends to become more focused toward early planning and increase communication to the congregation, so that members are aware of opportunities to become more involved. In 2013, the Missions ministry served in various capacities. A six week evangelism class was conducted and 7 persons attended and completed the class. Some of the members of the class went out into the neighborhood to witness and some had evangelistic interactions with people at the Bates Xtravaganza. The ministry served at Ronald McDonald House, which is a "home away from home" for families of ill

children being treated in local facilities. A meal was prepared and served to many families staying there. Light housekeeping was performed by the volunteers as well. Volunteers also had the opportunity to fellowship and hear the stories of some of those families residing there at the time. The ministry served alongside Endeavor Ministries at an event which they held. Endeavor Ministries is a local ministry which reaches out to the Muslim Somali/Bantu community in Louisville. A festival was held and volunteers manned various carnival games and had the opportunity to show the love of Christ to the many children who attended. Leaders of the ministry along with our Executive Pastor were able to take a trip to Jacmel,Haiti. They served with a team from Southeast Christian church. The team conducted a medical clinic and shared the Gospel with the people of Haiti. Over 700 people were seen in the clinics and all were presented with the Gospel. As a result, 30 people gave their lives to Christ! The ministry made an impact in the community by serving people and by showing the love of Christ in their actions. Several members became active with the Missions ministry and served at different events. For this upcoming year, we have plans to continue on in the direction weve started. In 2014 efforts will be geared toward the planning for our very own international trip, possibly to Haiti, in the future. There is still so much need in Haiti, and we want Bates Memorial to take part in showing the people of Haiti Christs love and letting them know they are not forgotten. We also plan to continue the trip to New Orleans, and we want to continue to partner with ministries right here in Louisville who are serving Internationals who havent been exposed to the Gospel and ministries that are serving those in need. The Missions ministry is hoping to start an annual Missions Weekend to expose the church to Missions and Gods heart for the world. Another significant event should prove to be vital in this area as well. The ministry plans to assist the church staff with a major event in 2014. The 117th Annual Session of the Lott Carey Global Christian Missional Community will be held in Louisville on August 11-15, 2014 and we will be hosting it. Lott Carey is an international Christian missions agency that helps churches extend their witness to the ends of the earth. This annual convention draws some 2,000 attendees. Although the task may appear to be daunting, the ministry is excited to be a part of this event! There are so many opportunities out there to proclaim and demonstrate the message of the Gospel to those who havent heard. Our greatest desire as a ministry is to make an impact for the kingdom, help those who need to hear the message of the Gospel, and to see mature disciples developed who follow Jesus into his mission in the world.

Prayer Ministry (Linda Jacobs) What were your ministry goals for 2013? The prayer ministry gal for 2013 was to get more people to trust in prayers. We were able to accomplish this goal because more people filled out the prayer request forms at the prayer boxes and online. Our goals for 2014 is to get more ministry leaders involved in leading people to come to prayer. In 2013 the prayer ministry participated with the Masterlife prayer session. We were able to impact the life of the church and community because more people ask team members to pray for them. We had 2 people join the ministry for 2013. Our goals for 2014 are to have prayer breakfast, prayer vigil and a community prayer walk. Prison Ministry Minister, Joe F. Starks Highlights / Accomplishments for 2013.. 1. Moving Forward through Participation This years theme has guided us in providing spiritual growth for the members of Bates Memorial Baptist Church with a level of excellence. Moving Forward through Participation, lead us to increased participation in all areas of Christian Education including the Life Training Institute (LTI), Vacation Bible School and our annual Bates Bible Institute. Through New Disciples Orientation and the MasterLife Series, we were able to take seriously our mission in Maturing the Saved as stated in our Mission Statement. I am very grateful and proud of the Leaders and Teachers who serve in Christian Education as they have moved to a higher level in preparation of their studies which adds to growth of the Bates Family. Because of your sacrifice and commitment, many lives are being transformed and strengthened through the Word of God. We were committed each month to move beyond these walls to take the Gospel to those in nursing homes and prisons teaching the Good News to those who are unable to attend Worship. We were blessed in our dedication to sharing with the residents of Mt. Holly Nursing Home, Camelot Nursing Home, the Dierson Center and the St. Anns Dismiss Charities for men. We thank God for the opportunities to teach this Gospel to those who are in need. We give special thanks to the Rev. Joe & Dorothy Starks and Deacon John and Sallie Lacey for their faithfulness and dedication to Lord and the ministry. Bates Bible Institute Moving Forward through Participation Here Am I, Send Me, was our 2013 theme for the Bates Bible Institute, which was held April 8th - 10th. We were also blessed by the powerful, anointed preaching by Rev. Dr. Marcus Cosby, Pastor of the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, TX. The entire congregation was blessed! We were lead in worship by Music World Entertainment & Grammy Award Winner, LeAndria Johnson, National Recording Artist, Patrick Dobson and the Bates Memorial Mass Choir. We experienced a record number of attendances each night. We say thank you to those who helped to make this event a blessing to the Bates Memorial Church. Life Training Institute (LTI) The Life Training Institute (LTI) continues to strengthen our congregation with weekly study of the Word. Our primary focus is to Make Disciples. The purpose of LTI is to equip believers of all spiritual maturity levels at Bates Memorial Church to become more effective and committed Disciples of Christ by promoting excellence in mind, character and service through the ministry of Christian Education. The four areas emphases are: Discipleship, Ministry, Stewardship and Evangelism. Discipleship encompasses learning more about Christ. Ministry is how you transfer that knowledge into action. Stewardship is the act of each disciple diligently supporting the ministry by sharing your gifts, talents, and financial support to the ministry. Evangelism is the act of spreading this knowledge through acts of service in the church and throughout our communities. Bates Bookstore The Bates Memorial Bookstore has been open for business for three years now. All praises to an almighty God! We salute John Randolph and the entire Bookstore staff and volunteers who serve diligently in providing material that is enlightening to its consumers and has been a blessing to many lives of the Bates Memorial Members. The Bookstore is stocked with wide variety of Bibles and Resources. The shelves are also lined with various literary genres: African American Theology, Inspirational, Christian Fiction, Womens, and Mens, Children & Youth, Christian Relationships and so much more! You can also purchase traveling mugs, fleece jackets and Hoodies adorned with the Bastes Memorial logo. True Love Waits jewelry has been a big ticket item for our youth and young adults who commit their lives back to God each year. We were also blessed to host book signings for Rev. Dr. Lance Watson, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss and Rev. Dr. Jasmine Scurlark. We were also honored to feature our pastor, Dr. F. Nursery The Bates Memorial Nursery Ministry believes that children are our special gift that God entrust to our care. This year we welcomed our New Nursery Director, Mrs. Shont Darling! She has been a gift to this ministry as we initiated our new Kid-Style Worship @ the Nursery! The Nursery is a fun, unique, and creative worship experience designed just for kids. Our goal is to help the children to develop their worship style, passion, and knowledge of The Word of God.

We look forward to the Nursery growing in volunteers and participation from our parents. We thank God for Mrs. Darling as she shares her heart with the Children of Bates! New Disciples The New Disciples classes have moved to the next level of teaching. This year we added several new teachers to the New Disciples Orientation and MasterLife Classes. This has enabled us to have even more class times to meet the needs of our growing congregation. The New Disciples Ministry has proven to be a vital part in the development of our congregation. We say thank you to all of the teachers for their hard work and dedica-

Assimilation Ministry The Assimilation Ministry and the Nursery Ministry were two ministries which have struggled in the past. We thank God for Margaret Reed and her team of volunteers who have committed to the task of reaching out to all who join Bates Memorial. The Assimilation Ministry diligently guides and tracks new members through the Orientation process and into the life of the Church. Moving Forward - 2014 2013 proved that with God, all things are possible! The Christian Education Staff of Volunteers and teachers have been faithful to their calling in allowing God to use them for His glory. We will continue in our studies to provide qualitative classes that will nurture our members spiritually so they can grow and enjoy a closer relationship with God, the Church and all other relationships. I stand with great anticipation that God will continue to do marvelous things for Bates Memorial through the Ministry of Christian Education. BCDC continues the mission of enhancing the quality of urban life with the dedication and commitment of the BCDC staff and volunteers throughout the year. BCDC program highlights in 2013 include the Healthy Hearts Initiative and the Kingdom Academy After School Enrichment Program. Monthly health screening events and two health fairs were offered to community residents who obtained services such as mammograms, AIDS/HIV screenings, and blood pressure checks as well important health care materials and information regarding the Affordable Care Act, which was enacted on October 1, 2013. A six-week cooking class educated adult participants on how to prepare healthy and nutritious meals on a budget. Additionally, a second Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation series was added to the Fall schedule. Kingdom Academy After School Program tripled student enrollment for the 2013-14 school year and expanded the partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools by offering out-of-school time (OST) programming at Meyzeek Middle School four days at week. BCDCs collaborations and partnerships with local non-profits, community groups and human services organizations were essential to our efforts in 2013. A new partnership was established with River City Love Squad and our collaboration with Meyzeek Middle School was expanded. River City Love Squad coordinated a Christmas Fellowship & Dinner at 1228 South Jackson and where over 200 individuals enjoyed a delicious holiday meal and received free blankets and other gifts. Louisville Metro Health and Wellness and Norton Healthcare provided funding that supported our Healthy Hearts Initiative, while Louisville Asset Building Coalition awarded a grant for operation of the free VITA tax service during tax season. Our partnership with Dare to Care was expanded to include a low-cost food coop that enables BCDC to augment food pantry stocks. Dare to Care also provided free groceries and a nutritionist for the six-week Cooking Matters class which was attended by approximately fifteen individuals. Volunteer support throughout the year was vital to our success in offering much needed services to community residents. In 2013, more than fifty individuals volunteered over 1,600 hours to BCDC by serving meals on Saturdays, assisting at health screening events, working in the clothes closet, tutoring at our after school program and providing technical support in addressing our communications and marketing needs. BCDC maintains a strong volunteer and community service base with the help of Jefferson County District Courts and Metro United Way. We also continue a strong relationship with the church family through events such as the Bates Extravaganza and the Bates Tree of Angels. BCDC is grateful for your continued support through Power of One contributions. The Power of One is vital to our ability to offer programs such as A Pearl to Wear Clothes Closet, the Healthy Hearts initiative, Kingdom Academy, Dare to Care, and the Bates Granny Network. Your support in 2014 will enable us to continue our outreach to individuals and families living in the Smoketown and Shelby Park neighborhoods and throughout the Louisville Metro area. On behalf of the BCDC Board, the Executive Director, and our committed staff and volunteers, we invite you to visit BCDC and participate with us in serving our community and making a difference as we compassionately minister to human needs.

Cheryl Williamson was a dedicated member of Bates Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Her personality was infectious and she touched everyone that she came in contact with. Sadly, Cheryls life was tragically ended in November of 2012, just months before receiving her well earned college degree. Bates Memorial was able to pay tribute to Cheryl during our Youth and Young Adult Weekend in which her mother received Cheryls Bachelor of Arts Degree posthumously, by Western Kentucky University. We will always remember Cheryls spirit and her one word mission that fueled her life...BELIEVE.
