A Magnetically Coupled Feedback-Clamped
Optimal Bidirectional Battery Charger
AbstractThis paper presents a magnetically coupled feedback-clamped optimal bidirectional
battery charger. The proposed charger acts as a current source, i.e., acts in constant-current (CC)
mode with a controlled output current in case of deep discharge of a battery, and as a voltage
source, i.e., acts in constant-voltage (CV) mode with a controlled output voltage for near-100%
battery state of charge. The proposed circuit is universal from the battery voltage point of view,
i.e., can charge a battery with any given voltage rating, and adaptive from the optimum charging
current requirement viewpoint, i.e., can adapt to the optimum battery charging current. The
presented solution uses a magnetically coupled bidirectional converter topology. In order to
make the system feedback controlled during the whole cycle of charging, the regulation loop is
clamped, and hence, automatic and smooth transition from the CC to CV mode is achieved
without the need of any extra switching circuit or control loop. Experimental and simulation
results for a 250-W prototype are presented to verify the proposed system. The prototype shows
maximum efciencies of 90.24% under boost mode and 92.7% under buck mode of operation.
The performance of the charger is veried using two different 12-V7-Ah and 12-V32-Ah
leadacid batteries.

Photovoltaic Power System With Battery
Backup With Grid-Connection and Islanded
Operation Capabilities
AbstractThis paper presents the analysis, design, and experimentation results of a photovoltaic
energy management system with battery backup. The proposed system is capable of both grid-
connected and islanded operations. The main advantage of the proposed system is that, in grid-
connected mode, the inverter works as a current source in phase with the grid voltage, injecting
power to the grid and controlling the dc-link voltage. The dc/dc converter manages the battery
charge. In islanded mode, the inverter control is recongured to work as a voltage source using
droop schemes. The dc/dc converter controls the dc-link voltage to enable the maximum power
point tracking reference to be followed. An operation protocol is proposed to ensure the quality
of the energy supply and minimize energy loss. A battery bank is connected to the dc link as
energy storage for islanded operation mode. The aim of this paper is to show that the proposed
system performs correctly, without dangerous transients for the inverter or the loads. Simulation
and experimental results on a 3-kW prototype show the feasibility of the proposed control
strategy.

Soft-Switching DC/DC Converter With a Full
ZVS Range and Reduced Output Filter
for High-Voltage Applications
Anew soft-switching dc/dc converter, which can solve the drawbacks of existing phase-shifted
full-bridge converters such as narrow zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) range, large circulating
current, large duty-cycle loss, and a large output lter in high voltage applications, is proposed in
this paper. The proposed converter is composed of two symmetric half-bridge inverters that are
placed in parallel on the primary side and are driven in a phase-shifting manner to regulate the
output voltage. At the rectier stage, two full-bridge rectiers sharing two low-current-rating
diodes are employed. This structure allows the proposed converter to have the advantages of a
full ZVS range, no problems related to duty-cycle loss, no circulating current, and a signicantly
reduced output lter. In this paper, the circuit conguration, operation principle, and relevant
analysis results of the proposed converters are presented. Experimental results on a prototype
converter realized with the specication of 80-in plasma display panel sustain power module
(320385 V dc input, 205 V/5 A output) validate the theoretical analysis.

Pulse width-Modulated Dual-Half-Controlled
Converter
AbstractThe dual-half-controlled-converter (DHCC) is a voltage-source active rectier which
can be considered as a potential alternative to the conventional three-phase six-switch boost
rectier. The DHCC is attractive due to its lower component current rating, immunity to shoot-
through, simpler gate drive circuitry, lower semiconductor losses, and fault redundancy.
Compared to a six-switch voltage-source-converter and a diode rectier with a shunt active lter,
DHCC presents some advantages and has good potentials for grid-tied and generator-tied
applications. In the previous literature, the DHCC was controlled through a hysteresis regulator.
This paper discusses in detail the current compensation and harmonic cancellation
methodologies and presents improved control techniques for the three-phase three-wire DHCC
using interleaved pulse width modulation (PWM). Compared with the existing hysteresis
controller, the proposed xed-frequency PWM controllers require smaller ltering elements
and/or a lower sampling frequency. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to
demonstrate the superiority of the proposed PWM control algorithm. The impacts of input
reactor sizing and dc-link voltage rating are analyzed and discussed.

An Advanced Power Electronics Interface for
Electric Vehicles Applications

AbstractPower electronics interfaces play an increasingly important role in the future clean
vehicle technologies. This paper proposes a novel integrated power electronics interface (IPEI)
for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in order to optimize the performance of the powertrain. The
proposed IPEI is responsible for the power-flow management for each operating mode. In this
paper, an IPEI is proposed and designed to realize the integration of the dc/dc converter, on-
board battery charger, and dc/ac inverter together in the BEV powertrain with high performance.
The proposed concept can improve the system efficiency and reliability, can reduce the current
and voltage ripples, and can reduce the size of the passive and active components in the BEV
drivetrains compared to other topologies. In addition, low electromagnetic interference and low
stress in the power switching devices are expected. The proposed topology and its control
strategy are designed and analyzed by using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results related
to this research are presented and discussed. Finally, the proposed topology is experimentally
validated with results obtained from the prototypes that have been built and integrated in our
laboratory based on TMS320F2808 DSP.

Energy storage system-based power control
for grid-connected wind power farm

Wind power is characterized as intermittent with stochastic fluctuations, which can result in
deviation of grid frequency and voltage when the wind power ratio is high enough. These effects
have a definite impact on stability and power quality of grid operation. This paper proposes an
energy storage system (ESS) based power control for a grid-connected wind power system to
improve power quality and stability of the power system. Vanadium redox flow battery (VRB),
as an environmentally-friendly battery provided with many advantages, is employed in the ESS.
A dynamic mathematical model of VRB is built by using an equivalent circuit, and its charging
and discharging characteristics are analyzed. The VRBs stable voltage is available in a wide
range (around 2080% state of charge), which is suitable for utilization of a single-stage AC/DC
converter in the VRB-based ESS. With a proposed energy storage control method, VRB-based
ESS is added at the exit of the grid-connected wind farm to filter fluctuations of wind power,
which ensures that smooth power will be injected into the grid and which improves power
quality of the power system. Simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the proposed
power control method for these grid-connected wind power systems. The grid-connected wind
farm with VRB-based ESS, wind speed (characterized as gust and stochastic wind), and wind
turbines are modeled in simulations. Simulation results show that the grid-injected active power
from the wind farm is effectively smoothed, and reactive power support can be provided for the
grid by the designed VRB-based ESS. Experimental verification is achieved with a low power
bench, where a RT-LAB real-time simulation platform and a direct torque controlled induction
motor simulate a real wind turbine and a wind speed model is built in the RTLAB real-time
simulation platform. The experimental results verify the proposed scheme through demonstrating
a stable and smooth power flow injected into the grid though the wind power fluctuated.

StatCom Control at Wind Farms With Fixed-
Speed Induction Generators Under
symmetrical Grid Faults
AbstractThe stability of fixed-speed induction generator (FSIG)-based wind turbines can be
improved by a StatCom, which is well known and documented in the literature for balanced grid
voltage dips. Under unbalanced grid voltage dips, the negative sequence voltage causes heavy
generator torque oscillations that reduce the lifetime of the drive train. In this paper,
investigations on an FSIG-based wind farm in combination with a Stat Com under unbalanced
grid voltage fault are carried out by means of theory, simulations, and measurements. A Stat
Com control structure with the capability to coordinate the control between the positive and the
negative sequence of the grid voltage is proposed. The results clarify the effect of the positive-
and the negative-sequence voltage compensation by a Stat Com on the operation of the FSIG-
based wind farm. With first priority, the StatCom ensures the maximum fault-ride-through
enhancement of the wind farm by compensating the positive-sequence voltage. The remaining
StatCom current capability of the StatCom is controlled to compensate the negative-sequence
voltage, in order to reduce the torque oscillations. The theoretical analyses are verified by
simulations and measurement results on a 22-kW laboratory setup.

A New Battery/Ultra Capacitor Hybrid
Energy Storage System for Electric, Hybrid,
and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

AbstractIn this paper, a new battery/ultra capacitor hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is
proposed for electric drive vehicles including electric, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid electric
vehicles. Compared to the conventional HESS design, which uses a larger dc/dc converter to
interface between the ultracapacitor and the battery/dc link to satisfy the real-time peak power
demands, the proposed design uses a much smaller dc/dc converter working as a controlled
energy pump to maintain the voltage of the ultracapacitor at a value higher than the battery
voltage for the most city driving conditions. The battery will only provide power directly when
the ultracapacitor voltage drops below the battery voltage. Therefore, a relatively constant load
profile is created for the battery. In addition, the battery is not used to directly harvest energy
from the regenerative braking; thus, the battery is isolated from frequent charges, which will
increase the life of the battery. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the
proposed system.

Experimental Results of 47-Level Switch-
Ladder Multilevel Inverter
AbstractThis paper provides experimental results for a 2.5-kW 47-level prototype of the
switch-ladder multilevel inverter including the following: input and output voltage and current
waveforms under resistive and inductive loads, efficiency, total harmonic distortion, voltage
stresses across the switches, behavior of the system under fault condition, and no-load power
dissipation. The most important advantage of this inverter is that only four switches conduct in
each interval in low frequency. This matter, beside the elimination of switching losses, has made
this inverter an efficient choice with 97% peak efficiency. The ability to continue working with
open-circuit modules is another advantage of the inverter. Furthermore, some important factors
behind the unreliability and inefficiency of inverters have been improved, including the
following: low duty cycle of conducting switches, staircase voltage stresses across switches with
low-voltage steppes, line switching frequency results in low temperature of switches, possibility
of removing low-pass filters, and independence to capacitors. The inverter is proposed to be an
advantageous choice in low-voltage stand-alone photovoltaic applications.

Genetic Algorithm-Neuro-Fuzzy Controller
(GANFC) Based UPQC Controller for
Compensating PQ Problem
In basic unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) configuration, the shunt active power filter
and series active power filter are shared with dc-link capacitor. During the time of power quality
(PQ) problem, the voltage across the dc-link capacitor is varied from the rated voltage. An
adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system (ANFIS) is one of the recent controllers used for
regulating dc-link voltage. In ANFIS controller, the membership function of the fuzzy controller
is optimized by using network neuron. But, the weight of the network neuron is changed during
the network training process; so the neural network (NN) performance and the control operation
are affected. Hence, to improve the control operation, a genetic algorithm (GA) based neuro-
fuzzy controller (NFC) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed controller, GA based
optimization algorithm is used for optimizing the membership function of fuzzy system. The
proposed GANFC based UPQC is implemented and the output performances are evaluated.

High-Efficiency Single-Input Multiple-
Output DCDC Converter

AbstractThe aim of this study is to develop a high-efficiency single-input multiple-output
(SIMO) dcdc converter. The proposed converter can boost the voltage of a low-voltage input
power source to a controllable high-voltage dc bus and middle-voltage output terminals. The
high-voltage dc bus can take as the main power for a high-voltage dc load or the front terminal of
a dcac inverter. Moreover, middle-voltage output terminals can supply powers for individual
middle-voltage dc loads or for charging auxiliary power sources (e.g., battery modules). In this
study, a coupled-inductorbased dcdc converter scheme utilizes only one power switch with
the properties of voltage clamping and soft switching, and the corresponding device
specifications are adequately designed. As a result, the objectives of high-efficiency power
conversion, high stepup ratio, and various output voltages with different levels can be obtained.
Some experimental results via a kilowatt-level prototype are given to verify the effectiveness of
the proposed SIMO dcdc converter in practical applications.

Hybrid-Switching Full-Bridge DCDC
Converter With Minimal Voltage Stress of
Bridge Rectifier, Reduced Circulating Losses,
and Filter Requirement for Electric Vehicle
Battery Chargers
AbstractThis paper first presents a hybrid-switching stepdown dcdc converter, and then, by
introducing transformer isolation, a novel hybrid-switching phase-shift full-bridge dcdc
converter is derived for electric vehicle battery chargers. The proposed converter provides wide
zero-voltage-switching range in the leading-leg switches, achieves zero-current-switching for
lagging-leg switches, and uses a hybrid-switching method to avoid freewheeling circulating
losses in the primary side. Because the resonant capacitor voltage of the hybrid-switching circuit
is applied between the bridge rectifier and the output inductor for the duration of the
freewheeling intervals, a smaller sized output inductor can be utilized. With the current rectifier
diode of the hybrid-switching circuit providing a clamping path, the voltage overshoots that arise
during the turn-off of the rectifier diodes are eliminated and the voltage stress of bridge rectifier
is clamped to the minimal achievable value, which is equal to secondary-reflected input voltage
of the transformer. The inductive energy stored in the output inductor and the capacitive energy
stored in the resonant capacitor of the hybrid-switching circuit are transferred to the output
simultaneously during the freewheeling intervals with only one diode in series in the current
path, achieving more effective and efficient energy transfer. The effectiveness of the proposed
converter was experimentally verified using a 3.6-Kw prototype circuit designed for electric
vehicle onboard chargers. Experimental results of the hardware prototype show that the
converter achieves a peak efficiency of 98.1% and high system efficiencies over wide output
voltage and power ranges.

New Random PWM Technique for a Full-
Bridge DC/DC Converter With Harmonics
Intensity Reduction and Considering
Efficiency
AbstractPWM techniques for a full-bridge dc/dc converter are investigated and a new random
PWM technique is proposed in this paper. Three PWM techniques with constant switching
frequency are discussed and the related random PWM techniques which spread the harmonic
clusters and give constant average inductor current to reduce the output voltage ripple are
discussed. The pros and cons of three constant switching frequency PWM techniques and the
related random counterparts are investigated. Experimental results show that there is a significant
efficiency drop of the random PWM technique due to significant increase of switching counts.
Therefore, this paper presents a new random PWM technique to significantly reduce the
harmonic intensity while not causing relevant impact on the efficiency. An FPGA-based digital
controlled isolated full-bridge dc/dc converter prototype is built to verify the performance of
conventional and proposed PWM techniques. The specifications of the converter include the
following: input voltage = 400 V, output voltage = 12 V, output power = 528 W, and switching
frequency = 100 kHz. Measured efficiency and harmonic spread factor will be used for the
evaluation of these PWM techniques.

Derivation, Analysis, and Implementation
of a BoostBuck Converter-Based High-
Efficiency PV Inverter
AbstractIn this paper, a single-phase grid-connected transformer less photovoltaic inverter for
residential application is presented. The inverter is derived from a boost cascaded with a buck
converter along with a line frequency unfolding circuit. Due to its novel operating modes, high
efficiency can be achieved because there is only one switch operating at high frequency at a
time, and the converter allows the use of power MOSFET and ultrafast reverse recovery diode. It
also features a robust structure because the phase leg does not have a shoot-through issue. This
paper begins with theoretical analysis and modeling of this boostbuck converter-based inverter.
And the model indicates that small boost inductance will lead to an increase in the resonant pole
frequency and a decrease in the peak of Q, which results in easier control and greater stability.
Thus, interleaved multiple phases structure is proposed to have small equivalent inductance;
meanwhile, the ripple can be decreased, and the inductor size can be reduced as well. A two-
phase interleaved inverter is then designed accordingly. Finally, the simulation and experiment
results are shown to verify the concept and the tested efficiency under 1-kW power condition is
up to 98.5% .

Soft-Switching SEPIC Converter With
Ripple-Free Input Current
AbstractA soft-switching single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) is presented in this
paper. An auxiliary switch and a clamp capacitor are connected. A coupled inductor and an
auxiliary inductor are utilized to obtain ripple-free input current and achieve zero-voltage-
switching (ZVS) operation of the main and auxiliary switches. The voltage multiplier technique
and active clamp technique are applied to the conventional SEPIC converter to increase the
voltage gain, reduce the voltage stresses of the power switches and diode. Moreover, by utilizing
the resonance between the resonant inductor and the capacitor in the voltage multiplier circuit,
the zero-current-switching operation of the output diode is achieved and its reverse-recovery loss
is significantly reduced. The proposed converter achieves high efficiency due to soft-switching
commutations of the power semiconductor devices. The presented theoretical analysis is verified
by a prototype of 100 kHz and 80W converter. Also, the measured efficiency of the proposed
converter has reached a value of 94.8% at the maximum output power.

AbstractMultiphase converter topologies for use in high performance applications have
received increasing interest in recent years. This paper proposes a novel multidevice interleaved
boost converter (MDIBC) that interfaces the fuel cell with the powertrain of hybrid electric
vehicles. In this research, a multidevice structure with interleaved control is proposed to reduce
the input current ripples, the output voltage ripples, and the size of passive components with high

such as conventional boost converter (BC), multidevice boost converter (MDBC), and two-phase
