The bible tells us about both the good and the bad sides of Gideon’s character.
Gideon showed great courage and served God faithfully in many ways. But this
does not mean to say he never did anything wrong. His whole story is told in
Judges 6-8.
James
James points out four things to avoid if we want to know God’s will and serve
him in the right way.
“He who walks with wise men is wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”
Proverbs 13:20
It may be that you can be a friend to someone who is seeking God’s guidance for
his or her life.
Jesus is a friend
• “You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:14
• “I no longer call you servants. … Instead, I have called you friends.” John
15:15.
Checklist
Key 1: Be humble.
Key 2: Pray.
Key 3: Follow the light you already have.
Key 4: Don’t give up.
Key 5: Don’t be put off by barriers.
Key 6: Use your mind.
Key 7: Ask a friend.
Key 8: Remember, God is not in a hurry.
Key 9: Trust God.
Look at the instructions for each key. How good are you at following each
instruction? Try putting them into order, with your best at the top, and so on.
For example, if you are good at using your mind, put it in high on your list. If
you are not so good at asking friends for advice, put the key low on your list.
Use the left hand column boxes for your list. Use the right hand column
boxes for a checkmark when you have read the appropriate pages.
Now start with the bottom item on your list, and turn to the relevant page.
Key 1: Be humble
A proud person
A proud person may miss out on God’s guidance simply through not being prepared to
pray to God about it.
A characteristic of humility is to be contrite or repentant: “This is the one I
esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” Isaiah
66:2
Concluding thought
“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility towards one another.” 1 Peter 5:5
Key 2: Pray
Dependence on God
Prayer shows dependence on God.
Jesus in Gethsemane
“Jesus withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond [his disciples], knelt down and
prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be
done.’ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in
anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood failing to
the ground.” Luke 22:41-44
Persevere
Jesus told two parables which both had the same moral to them. They were both
aimed at encouraging his followers to keep praying.
Clearly, persevering in prayer is something that Christians have always
found hard.
• The parable of the widow who wouldn’t take “No” for an answer
ALSO [Jesus] told them a defend and protect and avenge
parable to the effect that they her, lest she give me intolerable
ought always to pray and not annoyance and wear me out by
to turn coward (faint, lose her continual coming or at the
heart, and give up). He said, In last she come and rail on me or
a certain city there was a judge assault me or strangle me. Then
who neither reverenced and the Lord said, Listen to what
feared God nor respected or the unjust judge says! And will
considered man. And there was not [our just] God defend and
a widow in that city who kept protect and avenge His elect
coming to him and saying, (His chosen ones), who cry to
Protect and defend and give me Him day and night? Will He
justice against my adversary. defer them and delay help on
And for a time he would not; their behalf? I tell you, He will
but later he said to himself, defend and protect and avenge
Though I have neither them speedily. However, when
reverence or fear for God nor the Son of Man comes, will He
respect or consideration for find [persistence in] faith on the
man, Yet because this widow earth?
continues to bother me, I will
Paul’s trials
Paul left a record of some of the sufferings he gladly endured for the sake of Jesus,
in 1 Corinthians 4:10-13 and 2 Corinthians 11:23-38.
Setbacks
The setbacks we have experienced in our own lives become insignificant when
compared with what some Christian missionaries and martyrs have suffered for
Jesus.
Helping others
The Bible tells us to help other people carry the loads which weigh them down and
burden their lives: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the
law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
A promise to hang on to
Jesus said, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew
28:20.
Rational creatures
God made us with wonderful minds. We are meant to use them to the fullest – not
least of all when it comes to finding out God’s will for our lives.
God’s timescale
God’s view of time and our view of time are often very different.
We tend to be in a rush to achieve things, but God is never in a hurry.
Peter writes: “Dear friends, with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and
a thousand years are like a day.” 2 Peter 3:8
Before time
Before time, as we know it, God was active.
In creation “In the beginning God created the Genesis 1:1
heavens.”
In choosing us “[God] chose us in him before the Ephesians 1:4
creation of the world.”
A time for…
“TO EVERYTHING there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under
heaven: A time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to break down and a time to build up,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to get and a time to lose,
a time to keep and a time to cast away,
a time to rend and a time to sew,
a time to keep silence and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
A promise to hang on to
“Cast all your anxiety on [God] because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
Patience is one of the most necessary Christian qualities, when God’s guidance
seems hard to find or difficult to follow. Christians are told: “Be patient with
everyone.” 1 Thessalonians 5:14
A promise to hang on to
“Blessed are all who wait for the LORD.” Isaiah 30:18
Forbidden
The Bible makes it quite clear that we should never seek God’s will through any
occult practices.
“When you come into the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to
follow the abominable practices of these nations. There shall not be found among you
anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire, or who uses divination, or is a
soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, Or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a
necromancer. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and it is because
of these abominable practices that the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You
shall be blameless [and absolutely true] to the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 18:9-13
A promise to hang on to
• “If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify
us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
