This August 1 performance offers the program originally scheduled for Kettle Corn New Music's inaugural concert on March 21, 2013, also at Spectrum. The program, which was cancelled due to illness, was replaced on that date by a solo piano recital graciously performed by Ms. Moore.

Hailed by The New Yorker Critic Alex Ross as riveting, by Time Out New York as a dazzling diva, adept at old and new music and by The New York Times as a versatile, charismatic soprano endowed with brilliant technique and superlative stage instincts, soprano Mellissa Hughes has collaborated with many of todays greatest composers and musicians. Renowned for her flexible vocal technique and collaborative artistry, Hughes is equally at home in the concert hall and in front of a rock band. She performs regularly with ensembles including Alarm Will Sound, Clarion Music Society, Vox Vocal Ensemble, and is the lead vocalist of the amplified alt-classical band Newspeak. The New York Times has called her indispensable to New York's new music ecosystem. Described as brilliant and searching...beautiful and impassioned...lustrous at the keyboard by The New York Times, Lisa Moore was the founding pianist for the Bang on a Can All-Stars and she has collaborated with many of todays greatest composers and musicians. She has performed with such ensembles as the London Sinfonietta, New York City Ballet, Two Sense, Steve Reich Ensemble, Eighth Blackbird, So Percussion and many others, at venues including the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall. Passionately dedicated to the music of our time as well as the great musical canon, The New Yorker has called Moore "New Yorks queen of avant-garde piano." *** Kettle Corn New Music , founded and run by Alex Weiser, Chris Rogerson, Emily Cooley, Loren Loiacono, Ryan Harper, is a presenting organization dedicated to creating high-caliber concerts of new music in intimate, comfortable settings. During our college years, we often played our favorite music for one another, sitting in our dorm rooms, passing around a big bag of kettle corn. We frequently found these listening sessions to be a rewarding alternative to more formal, traditional concerts, and we want to bring this experience to a public forum. We feel passionately that contemporary classical music of the highest quality can be shared in a relaxed and welcoming environment. We go to movies to enjoy ourselves, even when our minds are challenged and stimulated. Likewise, Kettle Corn New Music presents music drawn from a broad range of styles and aesthetic backgrounds in an atmosphere where it can be heard as both entertaining and thought provoking. Kettle Corn New Music isn't about a particular style or a group of composers. Rather, it's an approach to listening that embraces music as both art and entertainment.
