Note: The sign of the effect size is arbitrary. When the direction of the result is consistent with the a priori hypothesis, it should be reported with a positive sign. When a result is in the direction opposite of that specified by the hypothesis, it should be given a negative sign. For example, with SCL-90-R GSI, where higher scores are more pathological, and youd expect pt. treatment to have a positive impact, you would put the GSI evaluation scores as Group #1. Reverse this order when a measure with higher scores equals less pathology (DSM-Axis V, SCORS, etc)
