Audio Book Evaluation

. Why does the placement of microphones have an impact on a recording? . the placement has a impact because you always can get a different sound when changing the position of the microphone. . In what ways must we consider the requirements of performers when placing microphones? . Well when recording instruments or vocals the sound always does not come out of one place, So it is always best to place the microphone somewhere where you get the most sound. The technique I use when recording guitar is the Spaced Pair Technique is when you set 2 microphones about 2 ft away from each-other, I always point the microphone on the 8th fret of a guitar and I always point the other at the12th fret. . What is a pop shield and why do we need them?

. A pop shield is anti-pop noise filter, used in recording studios it eliminates the popping sound caused by the impact of fast moving air. . Why might you not want to record vocals with a dynamic microphone? . You might not want to record with a dynamic microphone because a condenser microphone is way more sensitive and picks a lot more sound compared to a dynamic microphone. . Research 3 different microphones that are good for vocal recordings and explain why. . . . . PG27USB is very good for vocal recording at a home studio because it is Designed with a flat frequency response and also has a Large

diaphragm capsule which provides wide dynamic range for clear highs and strong lows. Here are the Specs: . . . . . Transducer Type : Condenser Polar Pattern: Cardioid Frequency Response: 20 Hz - 20 kHz Sensitivity (1 kHz): -33 dBFS/Pa kHz Sound Pressure: . Pad Off: 124 dB Pad On: 144 dB

Weight: 452 g

. Another good microphone for recording Vocals is a SM27. It is good for recording vocals because a 3-position switchable low-frequency filter helps reduce unwanted background noise or counteract proximity effect and also has transformerless preamplifier for transparency, extremely fast transient response and no crossover distortion. Here are the specs also for the SM27: . . . . . . Transducer Type : Condenser Polar Pattern: Cardioid Frequency Response: 20 Hz - 20 kHz Sensitivity (1 kHz): -37 dBV/Pa / 14,1 mV/Pa Equivalent Selfnoise: 10 dB(A) Sound Pressure: . . . the KSM44A is a good microphone for recording because probably one of the best to record vocals because it has multiple polar pattern options It Pad off: 138 dB Pad on: 153 dB

Weight: 642 g

also has Advanced Pre-amplifier Technology for very good threshold minimum of self-noise. Here the specs: . . . Transducer Type : Condenser Polar Pattern: Omnidirectional, Bidirectional, Cardioid Frequency Response: 20 Hz - 20 kHz

. Sensitivity (1 kHz): Cardioid -31 dBV/Pa; Omnidirectional: -37 dBV/Pa; Bidirectional: -36 dBV/Pa / Cardioid 29,8 mV/Pa; Omnidirectional: 14,8 mV/Pa; Bidirectional: 16,8 mV/Pa . Equivalent Selfnoise: . Cardioid: 4 dB(A) Omnidirectional: 6 dB(A) Bidirectional: 7,5 dB(A)

Sound Pressure: Cardioid: Pad off: 134 dB Pad on: 150 dB

Omnidirectional: Pad off: 140 dB Pad on: 152 dB

Bidirectional: Pad off: 139 dB Pad on: 151 dB

. . . . . We use headphones Because when youre recording, youre using a condenser microphone. These microphones pick up everything. This then means that if the singer or a session musician that was recording wasnt wearing headphones and the track was being played aloud, the mic would pick up the track as well as the vocal they are laying down. This can ruin the editing stage because the sound engineer/producer would not be able to add the right effects. . . speakers. . . the difference between a Passive and Active speaker is that a Passive speaker does not have a built in amplifiers it needs to be connected to your amplifier through normal speaker wire. . . Active speakers, on the other hand, have a built-in amplifier and are fed by a low-level signal passed along an cable which originates at your PreAmplifier . Because the amplifier is an active electronic device, it needs power. . . . . A tweeter is part of a speaker system which are made to produce high frequencies where as woofers are made to produce for low frequencies. . . What are tweeters and what are woofers? Research the difference between passive and active Why do we use headphones when recording?

. . Research a brand of speakers which are good for music venues, and explain why. . A Good brand of speakers that you could use is A UPQ-1P or UPQ-2P which are made by Meyer Sound Speakers. . (Following quoted from: http://www.meyersound.com/products/ultraseries/upq/components.php) UPQ : Components . The UPQ loudspeaker is a two-way, bi-amplified system featuring drivers designed and manufactured at Meyer Sounds Berkeley, California factory. Low-Frequency Section The low section features a high-power 15-inch cone driver with a 4-inch voice coil, created to meet the power requirements of the system. The drivers are a proprietary design employing neodymium magnets for higher efficiency and power handling with reduced weight. Front View of Low Driver Rear View of Low Driver . High-Frequency Section

The high-frequency section uses a 1.5-inch exit, 4-inch diaphragm compression driver with a neodymium magnet powered by a dedicated amplifier channel. The output of the high frequency driver is coupled to a constant-Q horn. The smooth and consistent performance of the UPQ horn is the result of meticulous research in Meyer Sounds anechoic chamber. The horn exhibits a remarkably consistent beamwidth in both the horizontal and vertical planes across a wide frequency range of 1 kHz to 18 kHz and delivers uniform attenuation for all frequencies outside the specified beamwidth. Why is it sometimes necessary to use dynamic effects (compressor, noise gate, EQ etc) during the mix-down process?

. It is necessary because for example say you are recording a vocal track and the vocalist has to do a vocal screech in the song, After recording and looking at the wave from you will probably see that it is very loud you could use a noise gate to make it sound quieter when it goes over a certain volume so it is very important to use dynamic effects when recording.
