) Lab 2: Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions (2pts) Purpose: Determine if a reaction is endothermic or exothermic and describe the reaction using appropriate vocabulary. (2pts) Introduction:

Reaction 1: CaCl2(s) + water ! CaO(aq) + 2HCl(aq) Reaction 2: water + NH4NO3(s) ! NH4+(aq) + NO3-(aq) Reaction 3: 3CuCl2 (aq) + 2Al(s) ! 2AlCl3(aq) + 3Cu(s) Reaction 4: H3C6H5O7(s) + H2O(l) ! H2C6H5O7(aq) + H3O+(aq)
Reaction 5: MgSO4(s) + H2O(l) ! MgSO4 + H2(g) + O2(g) Materials: Thermometer Procedure: Reaction 1 1. Measure 10mL water and add to test tube. 2. Record temperature. 2. Add _____ g CaCl2 to water, using the using the thermometer to stir. 3. Record temperature for 2 minutes. Reaction 2: 1. Measure 10mL water and add to test tube. 2. Record temperature. 3. Add _____ g NH4NO3 to water, using the using the thermometer to stir. 4. Record temperature for 2 minutes. Reaction 3: 1. Measure 50mL CuCl2 and add to beaker. 2. Record temperature. 3. Ask teacher to light alcohol lamp. Dip metal loop into CuCl2 and hold above flame. Record observations. Turn off alcohol lamp. (10pts) Data Table: RXN Initial 10 sec. Temp (C) 1 2 3 4 5 20 sec. 30 sec. 40 sec. 50 sec. 60 sec. 90 sec. 120 sec.

Stir Rod 3. Add strip of aluminum into solution. 4. Record temperature for 2 minutes. 5. Repeat step 3. Record observations. Reaction 4: 1. Measure 10mL water and add to test tube. Place test tube on test tube rack. 2. Record temperature. 3. Quickly add all of the citric acid, using the thermometer to stir. 4. Record temperature for 2 minutes. Reaction 5: 1. Measure 10mL water and add to test tube. 2. Record temperature. 3. Add small scoop of magnesium sulfate to the water, using the thermometer to stir. 4. Record temperature for 2 minutes.

Honors Chemistry (Copy the purpose, introduction, and data table in your notebook.) *Please write or type answers on separate sheet of paper and staple to your notebook. Post-Lab Discussion Questions: (10pts) 1. Graph the change of temperature for each reaction and staple to the page after your data. You may graph all the data on a single graph or make several graphs. Make sure to label the axes and title your graphs. (2pts) 2. You performed a flame test during reaction 3. Why might there be a change in color of the before and after flame? Post-Lab Conclusion Questions: (5pts) 1. For each reaction, describe as endothermic or exothermic. What evidence do you have? (5pts) 2. Rewrite each chemical reaction equation with energy written correctly as a reactant or product. Example: C(s) + O2(g) ! CO2(g) + energy (exothermic reaction) (2pts) 3. Define endothermic reaction in your own words, using system and surroundings. Why does an endothermic reaction feel cold? (2pts) 4. Define exothermic reaction in your own words, using system and surroundings. Why does an exothermic reaction feel hot?
