A Wal k for Water:
A Collaborative Fundraising Project for Students
to benefit the children and families
of the Azawak valley of Niger, West Africa
During nine months of the year, in stifling 100+ degree temperatures, the
children of the Azawak make a marathon hike for water, inspired not by an LET'S WALK TOGETHER
athletic goal, but by a desperate need. They travel up to 30 miles in a day, SO THAT THE CHILDREN OF THE AZAWAK
in an oppressive heat, with little to eat. They know that if they don't CAN HAVE WATER TO DRINK, AND TIME
return soon, one of their family members might die. TO PLAY AND LEARN FOR A BETTER FUTURE.
When: Saturday, May 17, 2008 - Check-in from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Rally begins at 10 a.m. Walk to follow.
Approximate walking time is 2 hours.
Where: Lake Frank in Derwood, Maryland (Rain or shine)
What: Students, with a parent or adult chaperone, will walk the 3.25 miles around the lake.
Cost: Registration for each student participant is $10. Additionally, students may seek sponsorships from family, friends,
neighbors and local businesses, a suggested minimum of $5.00 for each mile that they walk.
