Volume 38 Number 5 February 2, 2014

Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina

Dear Eastminster Family, In early December, I invited you to submit questions that you would like to hear addressed in a sermon. Over the next month, we will focus on four of the questions that were submitted, and we will look at some others this summer. Thank you to those who responded, and if you have a question of faith you would like to hear addressed in a sermon, you can still send it to me at bsmith@eastminsterpres.org. Continuing to think along the line of questions, let me say what a great idea God came up with when he invented the Church. While both the local church (like Eastminster) and the church universal are full of flawed people (like us!), there is something beautiful about people, even flawed people, when we together support shut-ins, mentor children, serve people who are hungry, grieve one anothers losses, and celebrate new life in Christ. While it can stretch us, there is also something beautiful about people gathering before our sovereign God, listening and learning and sharing with one another what our Lord, through the witness of Scripture and the power of the Holy Spirit, wants to teach us regarding the questions of life. In a world that is increasingly polarized, my prayer is that the church in general, and Eastminster in particular, will be a place where we can freely and humbly confess that we dont know it all, God is bigger than we are, and I believe, Lord; help my unbelief. Then, with respect for one another and with reverence for our God, may we sense the Savior in our midst. Here are the sermons for the coming month: Feb. 2- #1 Id Like to Hear a Sermon on Hope Romans 5:1-8 Feb. 9- #2 Would You Sell Your Beloved Sports Illustrated Collection and Give the Money to Charity? Luke 18:18-30 Feb. 16- #3 What Does it Mean That Presbyterians Are Reformed? Feb. 23- #4 Why Does God Allow Suffering? Youre blessedbe a blessing, Brad

(Eastminster Presbyterian Women) Morning weekday stUdy - On February 4, Eastminster will begin a six-week daytime video series by Max Lucado entitled Come Thirsty. We will meet from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. each Tuesday, through March 11 in room E-351. This series is about having God quench our spiritual thirst. Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty. The water I give will become a spring of water gushing up inside that person, giving eternal life. SUnday evening stUdy - This evening study is entitled: Making Room for God in our busy lives: practical ways to read Scripture and pray more meaningfully. This will be led by Lynn Grandsire and is to be a part of SUnday@5 beginning on February 16 - March 30 in room E-350. It will be a six-week study with the Peace Service in the middle as part of the class. To sign-up for the class, e-mail Mary at mbaldauf@eastminsterpres.org or call her at 256-1654. You are invited to a free church-wide fellowship event for the whole family on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. All youth and parents are invited! The game will be played at A.C. Flora High School as the adults and youth compete in a game of flag football. Come cheer on your team! Please bring an extra dollar (or two) or a non-perishable food item with you to worship on Sunday, February 2. The young people will greet you at the doors with soup pots and receive your gifts, sending one hundred percent to the charity they have selected. The scouts of Eastminster (boys & girls) will be recognized at both services and help in the Souper Bowl collection. Eastminster Presbyterian serves dinner to the 200 residents of Transitions every Third Thursday of the month. As much as we believe that we are helping out our brothers and sisters, we are the ones who, month after month, see Gods love poured out to each one of us made in His image!!! Transitions is inviting us to bring our entire family out to help the homeless community in Columbia. Children as young as age 10 can help serve on Thursday nights, if you have made a reservation. Please email Laura Long at laurapricelong@att.net if your family is interested in helping in any capacity. Each Third Thursday of the month the church brings Bojangles fried chicken and biscuits, fresh fruit, homemade pasta salad and homemade pound cake to the residents. Please know that your family is invited to be a part of this ministry. The servers meet at EPC at 4:30 p.m. and return to EPC by 6:30 p.m. Hope to see your family serve in 2014! Next Transitions is February 20th!
