Ping pong players play one set to 11 points. Musicians play
the written music by taking the sounds of the game as their
beat. The score of the game is projected in the background.

Directions for musicians:

Musicians play by taking the sounds of the ball hitting both the
paddles and the table as their beat; each one of these is
equivalent to an eighth note. The only exception to this is the
serve, where the first hit of the paddle is not taken as a beat.
This sound is to be felt by the musicians as a pick-up. The
downbeat of each point is the sound of the ball hitting the table
for the first time, on the server's side.

Brackets above the music mean looping. Whenever the
musicians reach that part of the music they should repeat it
indefinitely until the point ends. Loops are most of the times
different in length for each of the musicians within the same
point.




Expression-wise, it is more important - or at least equally
important - for the musicians to follow the energy of the game
than the written dynamics. Hence, if the game gains in
intensity, performers should react accordingly. Written
dynamics should be taken as the base dynamics from where
to react.

When the game reaches a match point, players will move
forward to their last page - if needed -, marked as match point,
and will loop the four points found there. This can be seen very
clearly in the parts - much more than in the score - which are
properly labeled and prepared with a tab that helps turning the
page in that critical moment.

Directions for ping pong players:

Players should try to hold the rally until they make a given
amount of hits, and only then start to risk progressively. This
goal of hits decreases as the piece progresses as follows:

1st point: 30 hits, 2nd point: 29 hits, 3rd point: 28 hits, ...

and so on until they arrive to 15 hits, which will be always
the minimum goal from then on until the piece ends.

Furthermore, their starting speed of play for each point should
increase progressively throughout the piece, starting very
gentle in the first point and arriving to the fastest speed
possible - while still being sufficiently comfortable to hold the
ball in play - towards the last point.

When the game arrives to a "match point", one of the players
should announce it out loud to the audience and musicians.
Players should continue to play with the regular ping pong
rules until the game is finished, without worrying to announce
any further score even if the game goes into deuce.

11 points - Installation version

Abstract:
Installation version of my concert piece "11 points". While the participants play a ping-pong match to 11 points, the
bounces of the ball both on the paddles and the table will trigger previously composed and recorded music, showcasing,
as a result, the beauty of a music whose basic tempo is uneven and unpredictable.

Background:
I hadn't seen the following before doing my piece, but I saw them later and it draws a similarity to my piece in the use of
ping pong balls: Alvin Lucier's "Music for Pure Waves, Bass Drums, and Acoustic Pendulums" (vimeo.com/61884228
although easily searchable in nternet).
Any sequenced music can be thought of an antecedent, such as piano rolls from the XX century, Nancarrow's player
piano pieces, etc.
The concert version is unique in having performers following an action that is steady but uneven. The installaton version is
unique in that the elements of a sport trigger a sequencer or music box, acting as a MIDI controller. Also, the rules of the
sport areboth in concert and installation versionthe element that structure the form of the piece
Goals
In previous works, I had been exploring different ways of feeling the rhythm, mainly by writing stemless notes and having
the musicians play by following their spatial location in the score. This piece takes this attitude one level further by having
the basic pulse altered, which is much more dramatic. In its concert version the piece is performed by 2 ping pong players
and 5 musicians. By asking the musicians to do an impossible task - to follow the unpredictable bounces of a ping pong
ball - the concert version stages human imperfection. The installation version leaves that layer of meaning out by having
the sensors and software do the job in a much perfectionist fashion. However, it has the advantage of allowing the
performance of subtle and "complex-contemporary" music to non-musicians: "Play a contemporary music piece: now you
can!".
Implementation:
Hardware materials (diagram at the end):
Arduino, Xbee with trace antenna X3, Breakout board for Xbee X2, Xbee explorer dongle, piezos X3, buttons X5, batteries
X2, contact mic, Jumper cables, connectors for batteries, Projector, Computer, Sound card, Speakers, Ping-pong paddles,
table, etc.
Software:
Arduino, Processing, RWMidi library for Processing, ProTools, Battery sampler plugin, Minim Library, Audacity.
Processing uses the input of the paddles and table to send MIDI notes to the sampler in ProTools, loaded with
prerecorded sounds. The intensity of the strokes is routed to MIDI velocity values. Paddles are equiped with a piezo and
Xbees that transmit through a receiver Xbee. For the table, a contact mic is used: Minim reads the input of the contact
mike and sends a MIDI note each time the intensity rises above a given threshold.
The music score - taken from the original concert piece - is written in Processing in MIDI values. Music is written for each
of the points in the piece.
Ping pong players use two buttons (up and down) attached to the table to keep the score. This tells Processing which
music to trigger and the score to project. Also, one reset button at the side of the table restarts the game.
