RESEARCH PROPOSAL

CHAPTER – 1

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM –

A study to assess the Knowledge of Staff Nurses regarding Instrumental delivery in a


selected hospital at Jabalpur (M.P).

OBJECTIVES –

1. Assess the knowledge of staff nurses regarding instrumental delivery.

2. Find out association of staff nurses knowledge regarding instrumental delivery


with selected demographical variables.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS –

Assess –

Means to explore the knowledge of staff nurses regarding instrumental delivery


with the help of structured closed ended questionnaire (multiple choice questions).

Knowledge –

It refers to the correct responses of the staff nurses regarding instrumental delivery
on structured closed ended questionnaire as evident from knowledge score.

Instrumental delivery –

An instrumental delivery is a method to assist mother to her deliver baby vaginally when
normal induction of labor is not possible, to prevent maternal and fetal complication with
appropriate nursing management. This is undertaken using either forceps or a ventouse
(suction) cup.

Staff nurses –

The qualified staff nurses with 1 – 3 yrs experience working in maternity wards of a
Hospital,at Jabalpur. (M.P).
.

ASSUMPTIONS –

1. There will be some knowledge regarding instrumental delivery among staff


nurses.

2. Adequate knowledge regarding instrumental delivery is essential to prevent the


maternal and fetal complications while working in labor room.

DELIMITATIONS :-

The staff nurse who are –

1. qualified.
2. having 1 – 3 yrs of work experience.

CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK:-

In my study conceptual frame work is based on General System Model

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH APPROACH:-

Cross sectional survey research approach will be used to collect the data from the sample.

RESEARCH DESIGN:-

Descriptive Survey method will be used for present study.

VARIBLES:-

Independent variable - Knowledge of Staff Nurses

Dependent variables - Instrumental delivery

SETTINGS OF THE STUDY


The setting for this study is the Maternity Wards of a Hospital, in Jabalpur.

POPULATION:-

The staff nurses who are working in maternity wards of a Hospital,at Jabalpur (M.P).
SAMPLE:-

The qualified Staff nurses with 1 – 3yrs of experience working in maternity wards of a
Hospital, at Jabalpur.

- Inclusion Criteria –
The staff nurses who are -

a. selected for the study in a selected hospital, at Jabalpur.


b. available at the time of study.
c. able to read & write the English language.
d. willing to participate in study.

- Exclusion criteria –

a. Staff nurses posted in isolation ward.


b. Staff nurses posted in OPD.

SAMPLE SIZE:-

Approximately 50 samples will be selected for the present study.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:-

Non – probability convenient sampling technique will be used to collect data from
sample.

DEVELOPMENT OF TOOL:-

Structured Closed Ended Questionnaire (MCQ) will be used to assess the Staff Nurses
Knowledge regarding instrumental delivery. The tool will be developed on the basis of
knowledge, experience, literature, journals, books, and internet.

PART -A –
It includes the demographic variables such as, year of working experience, Qualification,
Area of working, exposure to in-service education.

PART -B –

This section consists of 30 Structured Closed Ended Questions (MCQ) about


instrumental delivery which includes question related to maintaining aseptic techniques,
indication, contraindication, method, complications, psychological support and
management during instrumental delivery.

Scoring:-

Very poor upto – 6 0 – 20 %
Poor 07 – 12 21 – 40 %
Average 13 – 18 41 – 60 %
Good 19 – 24 61 – 80 %
Very good 25 – 30 81 – 100 %

VALIDITY:-

The content validity and criterion validity of the instrument will be obtained from five
experts;
two nursing experts, two gynecologist , one pediatrician..

Their opinion & suggestion will be taken to modify the tool .

RELIABILITY:-

The reliability of the tool will be established by using Test – Retest method on 5 staff
nurses in a Hospital, at Jabalpur. Karl Pearson’s correlation will be used to find out
reliability of the tool.
ETHICAL CONSIDERATION:-

1. Permission will be taken from Dean of Elgine hospital.

2. Informed consent from the will be taken from the staff nurses participating
in study.

3. Anonymity and confidentiality of the information will be maintained while


collecting data

PILOT STUDY:-

A pilot study will be conducted in a Hospital, at Jabalpur from ------------- to ------------


written permission and formal consent will be obtained from the Head of the Department
of the hospital in order to assess the reliability of Structured Closed Ended Questionnaire.
Five staff nurses who will fulfill the sample selection criteria will be selected for
the study.
The reliability of the tool will be checked with Test – Retest method. After a self
introduction, the investigator will explain the purpose of the study to the staff nurses
individually and will collect the demographic data in a Hospital,at Jabalpur
simultaneously by Structured Closed Ended Questionnaires. The reliability of the tool
will be checked with Test – Retest method.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION


Samples those who will fulfill the inclusion criteria will be selected by convenient
sampling method from the maternity wards of the hospital.
The study subject will be assured of confidentiality of the response to obtain there free,
frank, opinion. Data will be collected through structured close ended questionnaire
(multiple choice question) among 50 staff nurses in selected hospital at Jabalpur
selected by convenient sampling. After selecting the staff nurses, the purpose of study
will be explained to the staff nurses working in maternity ward and informed consent will
be obtained. 4 staff nurses will be selected daily.
DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION –

The analysis of data is planned to include descriptive and inferential statistics. The data
will be analyzed by descriptive analysis, method and interpretation of data will be
illustrated in the form of table, and figures.

• Frequency & percentage distribution will be used to describe demographic


variable.

• The mean and standard deviation will be used to describe the knowledge of staff
nurses.
• Chi square test will be used for finding the association of knowledge of staff
nurses with selected demographic variables.

Summary:-
This research study includes of statement of the problem, objectives , operational
definition ,assumptions ,delimitation ,conceptual frame work , literature review,
methodology that include research approach , development of tool, content validity ,
pilot study , method of data collection and data analysis and interpretation.
