What kind of education do we want? For many years weve been hearing that our educational system is bankrupt. In fact, the only news is that nowadays people are starting to realize that the problem is even more complex than what they used to think. Were starting to understand that our educational bankruptcy is due not only to the financial issues, but also to some structural problems that transcend all the economic matters. Even on the advanced countries the educational system is failing to keep up with the expectations and necessities of its students. In the modern world people are worried about learning more practical skills that can be applied in their lives and our schools are simply not prepared to deal with this demand. Besides that, with the advent of the internet, students are actually unlearning how to study as their parents did in the good old days. They dont want books; they want to learn fast, lightly and, consequently, in a more superficial way. Although schools cant simply turn their backs to the so-called academic subjects as history and geography, its absolutely important that they start to improve their skills to deal with our current world and our current demands. As a promising first step, schools should try to promote a bigger interaction between the academic subjects and real life; the students must be brought to the reality theyre going to face in their careers. Moreover, the ways of dealing with the students must be updated. Nowadays its useless to memorize all the information that we can find on the internet, therefore our schools should direct their forces to stimulate the students to develop their creativity. The true importance of formal education today is to create an entrepreneurial and groundbreaking spirit in the students. In order to accomplish this goal, students should gain more and more freedom and responsibility; they should be able to choose their own curriculum and to conduct their studies according to their interests and skills. Despite this empowering of the students, schools must maintain their involvement in the educational process. In this scenario of bigger connection between formal education and the reality, our schools must be, above all their other responsibilities, the last stronghold of the traditional and critic thinking. Even though it has to be updated, the school will always be the place where students get in touch with overlooked subjects as history, social studies, grammar, philosophy, etc. If we forget our non practical issues, we will create a society of dehumanized

people very able to develop new gadgets but absolutely incapable to see the big picture and to live as actual human beings.

Generally the future of mankind looks bright. Those who argue otherwise are being unnecessarily pessimistic

The modern world is in constant change mainly due to technology advances. A transformation implies change, which does not necessarily mean progress in a positive way, so why should we affirm that the future of mankind will be bright? It is well-known, and it is not a matter of opinion, that technology makes life easier in suchaspects as daily routines, communication or Medicine. If so many devices had not been invented to simplify daily routines, we would not have enough time to live modern life. Probably, instead of studying as much as we do, we would still spend days washing clothes, doing the dishes, travelling from a place to another, and so on. A similar issue would exist without communications improvements. Imagine our lives without cellphones or internet, how would we communicate? Nowadays we have the chance to know and learn whatever we desire just accessing a computer or cellphone connected to the internet, allowing us to get and share information easily. Another essential contribution that technology gave us consists in the advance of Health Sciences. Without preventive treatments or medication, we would not live so long and with such level of quality. Although sometimes elderly people do not experience a healthy life, there is a great chance that actual generation will face a better old age due to recent findings inMedicine. But assuming that we are living longer, we might conclude that humanity is overpopulating the Earth. This statement might be true unless we consider that families in the past used to raise more than four children, which is absolutely uncommon in our days. Taking into account these data without considering the impacts of technology we would believe that the future might be bright. Otherwise if we give any consideration to the problems faced by mankind in the past and compare them with our actual ones, we will realize that the problems and solutions change, but they will always exist, supporting my opinion that the future will be different but it is not going to be necessarily worse or better.

Proposal to up-date the school curriculum Current situation The school curriculum currently covers a very-well balanced range of subjects, including traditional and no-traditional areas such as Portuguese, Mathematics, Arts and Sports. Although the results are generally good, they take time away from practical subjects such as personal finances and sustainability. Recommendations The world is constantly changing and the education must be aware to the children's needs. Therefore, we have to

make many changes to the curriculum in order to fit the education to this reality. Firstly, I suggest that the methodology must be reviewed. It seems to me that if you adopt interactive channels such as TV and Internet, you will be more effective and productive. In my opinion, it is not necessary to waste time teaching many details in class. Clearly, the students do not pay attention more than fifteen minutes and, if the subject is boring, they will not memorize lots of names and dates. I suppose that is if the students search the main points at home, they will be better prepared to discuss the impacts in class. In consequence, I propose to reduce time classes to 40 minutes and as a result it will be possible to include some others practical subjects. If it is felt that students need to develop more effective life skills, I recommend prioritizing Personal Finances. Firstly I propose that we should set up links with the personal spends and earning toteach how to manage their personal budget. I would like to put forward the idea that is necessary to have a very well planed personal budget to reach our dreams. In order for our future managers to live a comfortable life in our planet, the education must be aware to include the subject sustainability in the curriculum. Seeing that, many institutions have been invested in such way as to preserve their business. In other words, this approach has been present in businesses strategy since last decade. Conclusion Overall, what we always have to remember that the school must prepare future citizens to the life but, at same time, must maintain its reputation as excellence.

Here follows the writing task 2: Schools nowadays, at least most of them, are dealing with a matter of great importance, a turning point in the current generations educational system, to be more precise. Its been brought to our attention that some schools still insist in a old fashioned style, per say; teaching Latin, French and lacking on

more technical areas (which should offer a wide range of optional courses, from woodwork to IT) that give opportunities to all students to seek their best interest while preparing them to make a better decision when going to university. Nevertheless, athletics (which includes all sorts of sports) also pose a great deal on students development, not only preparing them for future competition performance (which turns into a life career) but also teaching them important life values such as team work and even healthy habits. Following the line of thought above, we have the arts as an area that can be divided into several clubs/organizations for students interests and future careers, and by this we take i nto account music, theatre, filming or even gastronomy. Surely all this demands more investment, but it must be a subject of priority, for both state and parental institutions, to contribute, even with the smallest of the contributions, to this projects realization. Despite any efforts to enhance the schools curriculum and teaching methods shown before, the continuation of this project will be of no value if the parents and teachers dont assemble a school community whose main purpose is the supervision and continuous improvement of all students activities, not as a strict group pushing away the independence schools must have (for both institution and students), but as a group of great importance and representation. I, therefore, conclude this proposal by hopefully expecting at least the necessary seriousness this recommendation deserves to be read with.

Suggestions About How the Curriculum and Facilities Could Be Improved Dear school authorities The traditional areas that are included in the school curriculum, such as geography, history and mathematic, are an essential part in the development of the students life. However, we need an adaptation of the school curriculum for this new age of accessible and fast technology, called

globalization, wich are essential nowadays. The school should make changes in the traditional curriculum, creating classes to make children understand how to use the new technological advices, such as advanced computers and Ipads. An essential thing that should be teached for them, is how to be safe in the internet, how to deal with problems that could appear, like hackers, virus, online robbery etc. Experiences outside school environment would be a great stimulus to develop children's life skills, a subject called "O.C.R." (Outside Contact & Research), could be a great idea, wich would give students more useful experience that only academic study, the cost of this subject would be much more cheaper than the traditional ones, because in "O.C.R.", students don't need books, only a notebook or a piece of paper if they want to take note of something, and even having the transportation problem, this would be much more easier to solve than have to make the students buy new books. We have to remember that the school must maintain the reputation, so add to that, the new update in the school curriculum, will bring the school to the modern world, increasing the popularity of the school, bringing more resources for the school grow more and more over the years, with structure, and quality of education. I hope that my suggestions could help you, raising the knowledge and the life skills of these children, which they will be prepared for the future, as a human being. Gabriel
Student: Antonio Pdua Subject: Proposal to up-date the school curriculum CURRENT SITUATION: The school Curriculum (SC) now a day, in Brazil, its directed to pass on straight to the University including the formal schedule following the Education Minister (MEC). Although exams results

are generally good is proved that isnt good enough to evaluate the level of the candidates knowledge. RECOMMENDATIONS: Currents researches on Brazil proved that the school curriculum could improve by adding different topics or subjects, in order to evaluate a person in a wider spectrum. According to recent results of researches on Education field, its extremely important and as recommendations that the students, have direct access to different subjects or disciplines like Environments in many ways we talk about sustainability or genre diversity like transgender or religious believes. But the most important thought, in my opinion, its the ability to discuss about citizenship. I think that Brazilian citizens have a lack of understanding and addressing about politics and the real sense of what is the real role whats means be a politician. Its important that the students need to develop more effective life skills. Its really important that the student could make the associations between the real life or everyday life and the state of politics. In order to reach this stage, I see as necessary to provide for teaches and family (in school environment) the capability to prepare on said subjects. I reckon thats not easy, but at the same time, is totally necessary. CONCLUSION: We always to remember that are a decision from the Education Minister (MEC), but as a citizen we have the obligation to bring the topic to authoritys attention. The way that something could happen and changed right now, is thought a collective participation when addressing the topics. Its import revaluated according to the new proposal on the regular basis, taken in to consideration the new realities about the world that we are living. I hope that member of the Education Minister (MEC), think a little bit more about this proposal that Im trying to share here. Regards, Antonio Pdua History Teacher in a Public Municipal School.
