SAP NetWeaver Business Client and the UI Client for SAP NetWeaver Portal - FAQ
Each users business processes are unique and thus enterprise applications must run in an environment that is flexible, adaptive and intuitive enough to match the different work scenarios of any business user. The UI client for SAP NetWeaver Portal (EP) and the SAP NetWeaver Business Client (NWBC), provide a flexible solution for different business users within the organization. Both SAP NetWeaver user interaction (UI) client solutions, alone or together, provide a complete offering for the organization needed to support the different business users work scenarios, tasks, and technological demands. In order to aid in defining which UI client is ideal for the organizations and end users needs, the following frequently asked questions and answers including recommendations have been composed.

Why is having a UI Client as Single Entry Point, important for SAP customers?
With a variety of daily tasks at hand, ranging from a leave request to entering a new sales order transaction in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and through to notifying the warehouse of an incoming shipment of goods using the Supply Chain Management (SCM), technology becomes the focal point for end user activities. As technology expands and overtakes manual tasks of the past, the organization is challenged with providing an environment that is usable, efficient, organized, and governed. A UI client that provides a single entry point for all the end-user business scenario needs is crucial in fulfilling this challenge. SAP offers a comprehensive UI clients offering (including the two main clients, UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and SAP NetWeaver Business Client which are highlighted in this document) geared at simplifying and consolidating the growing technological environment and its demands from the end user. Using these clients, the organization can provide role driven entry points, exposing end users to business applications relevant to their specific work-related tasks and to other information that the organization would like to expose.

What is the UI client for SAP NetWeaver Portal?


The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP is SAPs enhanced zero footprint, browser based client that serves as a single entry point solution for the enterprises intranet and extranet needs. The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP provides a distinct point of access to SAP and non-SAP information sources and repositories, applications, and services in and outside the organization. This HTML client, serving as a front-end utilizes the Portal services infrastructure (serving as the Portal backend) for role based access to the SAP systems. Beyond its aforementioned core functionality and further detailed below, the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP provides the tools needed to manage and integrate business content, and to share and collaborate on the basis of it. It offers administrative capabilities and role based end user personalization features such as the ability to control and customize main elements of the user interface. Furthermore, it allows for creating customized corporate-branded solutions, designed to match the company style guides and standards.

What is SAP NetWeaver Business Client?


The SAP NetWeaver Business Client (NWBC) is a rich desktop client, using the latest smart client technology. The SAP NetWeaver Business Client, formally known by the internal project name Muse offers a unified environment for and a single point of entry to Web Dynpro applications and other SAP business applications and technologies. Suited to run business application content through its multiple rendering engines, the SAP NetWeaver Business Client provides a solution for hosting classical Dynpro/SAPGUI UIs, BSP pages, Portal pages, and other content. In addition, utilizing an extended XML based UI protocol (available from the NetWeaver Business Client for ByDesign release and onwards) it can support the smart rendering of Web Dynpro on the local desktop or laptop. The SAP NetWeaver Business Client can flexibly consume SAP NetWeaver Portal roles that contain application content and tasks accessing backend, line-of-business systems. In addition to the basic capabilities detailed above the SAP NetWeaver Business Client leverages its desktop footprint benefits to provide highly integrated and attractive business applications with high fidelity of user experience and operational quality.

What are the Main Shared Capabilities and Unique Advantages of these Clients?

Main Shared Capabilities Although the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and SAP NetWeaver Business Client have their own distinct abilities and advantages for the individual business user, they share many of the same capabilities, the main ones detailed below. Single Point of Entry Clients. Both clients serve as single entry points to SAP business applications, intended at offering a consolidated environment for the needs of the organizations endusers. Powered by a Single Integration Platform and UI Infrastructure.* Both clients are powered by the same integration platform and UI infrastructure, SAP NetWeaver UI infrastructure (Portal Server and Web Dynpro which communicate the data content and UI logic to the front-end). This ensures that any change, addition, deletion, or predefined rule such as role assignment or screen adaptation will be consistent throughout the applications and reflected in both UI clients. This empowerment is dependent on an existent installation of the portal on the server side (technically referred to as EP Core and EP usage types), which holds the portal infrastructure and can potentially be used by the specific or both UI clients. With the infrastructure in place, the clients access the portal through a service enablement layer holding the standardized APIs, open services, and protocols.

Enables a Robust Environment for running SAP Business Applications. Both clients ensure efficient and intuitive communication with SAP business applications. The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP enables display of content through HTML rendering of Web Dynpro, BSP, content from Internet Transaction Server (ITS) and other web content. The SAP NetWeaver Business Client, in addition to HTML rendering offers an optimized UI protocol for communicating with application

content and allows the displaying of Web Dynpro applications through smart client rendering (available from the NetWeaver Business Client for ByDesign release and onwards). Lastly, the SAP NetWeaver Business Client has the ability to fully host existing Dynpro applications and thus display native SAP GUI. Work List Proficient. In order to better facilitate the work environments of the business users and thus match their individual needs, both clients offer work lists as part of their role-based Work Centers. Using these work lists, each end user can be provided with a listing of the relevant tasks and SAP backend information that is directly pushed to them. Furthermore, the work lists in the Work Center serve as a starting place for transactions navigating the users contextually to the relevant screens and application floorplans. The work lists can be individually tailored by the user to pull in the SAP information desired and present it in the right way. Enables Role and Object-Based Navigation (OBN). Since both applications are powered by the same integration platform, the portal services infrastructure is used to define role-based access to the different SAP systems. The resulting harmonized role structure empowered with the Control Center and Work Centers enables consistent navigation capabilities throughout, ensuring common navigation to and between applications (as can be seen in the Overall Navigation Model image).

Unique Advantages Below you may find a partial list outlining the main unique capabilities and advantages of the discussed clients, which are complemented by additional features intrinsic for fulfilling the complete user experience. The main advantages of the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP include: Zero Footprint. The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP is a client framework application that does not require any software installation or configuration on the end users system. As such, it is geared for corporate Intranet and Extranet scenarios ensuring centralized maintenance and governance. Access from Anywhere and Platform Independent. Since the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP is a browser-based client; with the correct permissions it is accessible from any PC with internet access. It is platform independent, not dependent on the MS-Windows platform and supports a variety of UI technologies (ranging from standard HTML to Flex and Silverlight) as well as the browsers outlined in SAPs Product Availability Matrix (PAM). External Facing Portal Usage. Due to its web-like behavior, customization capabilities and improved performance, the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP can be used to expose applications, services and information over the internet to customers, partners and employees. Business Content Administration. The UI client for SAPs NetWeaver EP gives administrators the ability to control and govern the content and to provide each user with a customized work environment. Through this environment end users are given personalization capabilities such as determining their desired portal look and feel theme and logon credentials. Branding Options. Using the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP, there are full branding capabilities that can be implemented through the use of the theme editor, JSP tag libraries, HTML and CSS. Collaboration. The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP offers document based team collaboration capabilities.

The main advantages of the SAP NetWeaver Business Client include: Desktop Footprint. The SAP NetWeaver Business Client requires an installation on the end users system. The resulting desktop footprint provides for enhanced capabilities significant to a desktop application some of which are detailed below and in the What is the Future Roadmap for each Client section Increased Leveraging of the Desktop Capabilities subsection. Enhanced User Interface with a High Fidelity UI. Leveraging its desktop footprint the SAP NetWeaver Business Client offers a modern and attractive user interface, with rich client interaction capabilities (e.g. drag-and-drop, client / window resize ...). Furthermore, this client makes use of three strong embedded UI rendering engines on the users end system (HTML, SAP GUI, and Smart Client). These engines enable the display and rendering of UI objects in minimal time while still remaining efficient. Encapsulation of SAP GUI. To extend the locally installed SAP GUI into a harmonized environment, the SAP NetWeaver Business Client offers a Dynpro canvas, which allows the embedding of existing SAP GUI content for Microsoft Windows. This capability requires that SAP GUI must be existent locally and thus SAP GUI can be installed altogether as part of the SAP NetWeaver Business Client installation.

Desktop Performance.* The SAP NetWeaver Business Client, due to its desktop application, makes use of protocols and technologies which enable direct transaction with the backend systems followed by the rendering of the relevant content locally on the desktop.
* The NetWeaver Business Client does not solve latency or bandwidth issues which will yield identical behavior in both the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and SAP NetWeaver Business Client. To solve these types of issues the Accelerated Application Delivery offering is recommended.

Direct Backend Access. To address different use cases such as single, backend system scenarios or in-house skill sets limited to ABAP the SAP NetWeaver Business Client offers direct access to the SAP backend. The direct backend access is used for example, to provide access to the traditional ABAP-based role menu, known as PFCG used largely in the SAP Business All In One scenarios and thus under such use cases does not require the installation of the Portal on the server side.

What is the Future Roadmap for each Client?


While the current UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and the SAP NetWeaver Business Client applications are focused on creating and perfecting the defined functionality, meeting and maximizing performance and SAP standards, and providing an efficient and user friendly application, the near future is characterized by a focus on innovation brought on by the developing work scenarios of contemporary business users. The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and SAP NetWeaver Business Client will be evolving in parallel so that they will be able to adapt and share new functionalities but will also be able to provide additional capabilities that are unique to their architecture. In the near future several services will be created to be consumed by both clients. In part some of these services will be focused on enhancing collaboration means, content management, and Web Page Composer authoring capabilities as highlighted below: Collaboration. The collaboration effort will provide services needed for business users to jointly access, create, and share information contextually. New features will include, in part, intuitive usability (e.g. Drag & Drop) and Web 2.0 elements (e.g. Tagging) and will include the already released Web Page Composer. Content Management. The Web Page Composer 2.0 is an intuitive application that provides portal users with content composing and authoring capabilities. These end users will be able to easily create, edit, and remove content from the portal using simple operations such as drag and drop.

The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP newest releases will primarily focus on delivering the new Ajax-based Framework Page and thus maximizing the advantages of Ajax in addition to leveraging the benefits of a browser based client as defined below: Ajax-Based Framework Page.* The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP is primarily transitioning into an Ajax-based application which allows for a significant improvement in performance and usability. The Ajax interface allows for an attractive and intuitive User Interface which follows the new SAP Signature Design and improved user interaction model. The Ajax Framework Page focuses on simplicity and letting advanced personalization capabilities ranging from choosing content and layout to determining the level of service consumption through an enhanced performance scheme. Furthermore, it is implemented using JavaScript and ensures asynchronous data transfers between the server and the client as well as enhanced client side caching reducing server load and moving activities to the client side. Through this implementation, the entire application is not interrupted and there is no need to update the entire page with every server request, thereby achieving a flicker-free experience. The Ajax Framework Page provides for a complete and easily customizable framework page allowing for simple branding capabilities on top of the SAP NetWeaver UI infrastructure yielding a basis for future development.

The SAP NetWeaver Business Client newest releases will primarily focus on evolving the SAP NetWeaver Business Client, by leveraging the client desktop capabilities through enhanced features and providing an improved user experience as detailed below: SAP NetWeaver Business Client for Business By Design.* To extend the current SAP NetWeaver Business Client offering, the next relevant release will be for the Business ByDesign customers. This client will offer advancements to the current client including the new enhanced, harmonized and modern User Interface following the SAP Signature Design, a new multi window interaction model, a search interface, and utilization of the latest Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation technology as well as the Smart Client Rendering for Web Dynpro applications. * The SAP NetWeaver Business Client for Business By Design is expected to be available as part of the SAP By Design

Evolving SAP NetWeaver Business Client. Following the SAP NetWeaver Business Client for SAP Business ByDesign release, the SAP NetWeaver Business Client will partially incorporate the aforementioned advancements as relevant for the SAP Business Suite offering as well as provide additional desktop relevant capabilities aimed primarily for the transactional user. Increased Leveraging of the Desktop Capabilities. The SAP NetWeaver Business Client will further leverage its desktop footprint to enhance performance, user interface, and interaction capabilities. Use cases such as utilizing the SAP NetWeaver Business Client desktop application as a potential organic widget rendering engine to expose SAP applications, task flows and information and to enable users to connect and work directly from their desktop without extra navigation steps and clicks, providing Microsoft Office Integration to supplement the comfortable and habitual work behaviors of business users whose daily tasks include working with Microsoft Office applications, advanced graphical capabilities with data interaction for various imagery (e.g. to visualize products and bill of material in a Product Lifecycle Management transaction) and light Offline Usage for on the road scenarios, all of which require a desktop footprint, are being assessed and prioritized to be potentially offered as part of future releases of the SAP NetWeaver Business Client.

Which UI Client capability best suits which Work Scenarios and User Groups?
The answer is not one or the other; both UI clients can suit the everyday needs of the typical business user, but choosing the optimal UI client amongst the two is usage scenario and organizational requirements based. In trying to determine which UI client capability will best suit which work scenario, there are two main usage types within the organization, the information worker and the operational user that may be identified: The information worker is identified as a knowledge worker or people manager that performs a few transactions throughout his/her work day. He/she often needs a lean environment to perform flexible and cognitive work that requires multiple information sources and devices. The information that he/she accesses is usually unstructured and encompasses many ad hoc tasks. An example of such a worker may include a business analyst whose daily activities include triggering different financial and business reports, performing unique sales and partner related transactions, and browsing the internet for market information. The business analyst may need to access this information, locally at the office, from his home or from meetings. The information workers will most likely better benefit from the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP offering. The operational user, also known as a power user is an individual contributor with structured repetitive tasks. His/Her work is usually composed of routine transactional work that makes use of single or few enterprise applications. He/She usually needs specific and fast access to their information sources for real time or task based continuous needs and may be highly reliant on work lists to structure their continuous tasks. An example of such a worker may include a wholesale inventory coordinator, whose main responsibilities include accepting and logging in the incoming inventory, defining the location within the warehouse of the new inventory through the Supply Chain Management (SCM) system, and updating requests for missing

The expert users will most likely better benefit from the SAP NetWeaver Business Client offering. To summarize, once the usage scenarios have been identified and in addition to internal organizational considerations: The UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP path is better suited for users and IT departments who want to: Use it for Enterprise portal / intranet and extranet scenarios as well as SAP applications entry points Use SAP business applications in addition to corporate / managed content Employ collaboration capabilities in their habitual workflow Access enterprise-wide applications from different locations and access points Utilize complete branding capabilities Handle Web content creation and usage of HTML / CSS technologies Employ maintenance of a UI client through a central location The SAP NetWeaver Business Client path is better suited for users and IT departments who want to: Use SAP business applications frequently and have a need for fast data entry Ensure an evolutionary path from SAP GUI and Dynpro screens in conjunction with new business application content based on Web Dynpro Supplement users whose daily work scenarios include transactions with the SAP GUI applications and who feel comfortable with the classical SAP GUI experience but would like the support of a portal-like, role-based and task-driven environment. Consume rich clients that offer real time performance Leverage desktop performance and caching capabilities In conclusion, the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and NetWeaver Business Client will shape and supplement the work methodologies as known by the enterprise business users today. They aim to simplify and empower daily work scenarios, making carrying out tasks more intuitive, efficient, and productive. Realizing that each users business processes are unique, both applications deliver a solution catered to fulfill the user centered needs. Once the above considerations are taken into account, the client strategy of which client to choose solely depends on the end-user and organizational needs. The strategy could include just the UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP, just the SAP NetWeaver Business Client, or most likely a mixture of both. How does the SAP CRM Web Client Fit in with the SAP NetWeaver UI Clients?
The SAP Customer Relationship Management (CRM) 2007 solution offers as part of it a new CRM Web Client framework, an additional UI client offering. The CRM Web Client is a BSP based UI client, offering an enhanced user interface geared at meeting the specific needs of the CRM system. When using the CRM 2007 as a standalone solution it is recommended to use it with the CRM Web Client, whilst if using the CRM 2007 integrated with the other Business Suite solutions then it is recommended to use the SAP NetWeaver UI clients. The browser based UI client for SAP NetWeaver EP and the desktop footprint SAP NetWeaver Business Client can cover the organizational comprehensive needs for end-to-end business scenarios and applications and can host the CRM content rendered as HTML iViews within.
