RELEASE 10
The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS) is a high-performance MPLS-enabled Carrier Ethernet platform dedicated to Ethernet service delivery at maximum scale. With multiterabit capacity, leading port density, advanced MPLS capabilities and best-in-class service and availability attributes, the 7450 ESS is the platform of choice to enable metro-wide Carrier Ethernet transformation.
With the exibility to support both advanced Ethernet and IP services, the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS enables networks to evolve and enable new service revenue opportunities while simultaneously pro viding outstanding investment protection. Advanced Ethernet services includes Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) and Virtual Leased Line (VLL) services, along with Ethernet access to IP VPN and enhanced Ethernet services (IES).

across metro, regional and international boundaries. The 7450 ESS has the exibility to offer any combination of value-added Ethernet or IP-based services. Leveraging Service Router technology from the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR), the 7450 ESS also supports advanced IP services. This helps protect investments and allows full asset utilization for existing Ethernet services, while creating opportunities to expand revenues with new IP services.
The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS integrates the scalability, resiliency and predictability of MPLS with the bandwidth and economics of Ethernet to deliver Carrier Ethernet services and provide a common infrastructure for the metro aggregation of mobile, business and residential services.

FEATURES
Multi-terabit capacity
The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS delivers multi-terabit throughput capacity to meet ever-increasing bandwidth requirements. Leveraging breakthrough FP silicon developed by Alcatel-Lucent, the 7450 ESS provides industry-leading density on Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GigE), 40GigE and 100GigE line cards. With support for two terabits of capacity in one third of a rack, the 7450 ESS delivers high-bandwidth capabilities with no trade-off between performance and advanced service delivery.
Best-in-class availability
Always-on services have become a benchmark service attribute. The industryleading Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS has a eld-proven ability to minimize service disruption, based on its comprehensive suite of high-availability features. These capabilities include: non-stop routing, non-stop services, in-service software upgrades (ISSU) between major and minor software releases, fast reroute, pseudowire

redundancy, innovative multi-chassis automatic protection switching (APS), using ITU-T G.8031 and ITU-T G.8032 and multi-chassis LAG, as well as graceful restart helper mode and MPLS-TE graceful shutdown. With these powerful features, the 7450 ESS is the industrys most reliable platform for offering always-on services and applications.
specialized management tools, including the Alcatel-Lucent 5650 Control Plane Assurance Manager (CPAM) and the 5670 Reporting and Analysis Manager (RAM), work with the 5620 SAM to streamline network operations and aid in provisioning, fault management, performance manage ment and analysis of all advanced networking services.
sustainable product life cycle management, the 7450 ESS platform helps service providers minimize their environmental impact while lowering operational costs.
HARDWARE OVERVIEW
The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS is available in four chassis variants - the 7450 ESS-12, ESS-7, ESS-6 and ESS-6V. With these four variants, xed and wireless service providers and multiservice operators (MSOs), as well as enterprise customers, can build out cost-optimized Carrier Ethernet infrastructures for a right-sized solution for any network location. Each system offers leading throughput and density, as well as the ability to mix and match interface adapters with exceptional portability across the different chassis. Table 1 provides a summary of key technical specications for each variant within the family. The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS family supports a wide range of media and service adapters, optimized to address different network and application requirements. They include: Switch Fabric/Control Processor Modules (SF/CPMs) The SF/CPM integrates the switch fabric and control functions into one module. One SF/CPM (minimum) is required and is supported on all platforms. When two SF/CPMs are installed, the switch fabrics are active on both cards and operate in a load-sharing arrange ment, doubling the chassis switch fabric throughput. Input/Output Modules (IOMs) IOMs are supported on the all platform variants and are optimized for exibility in deploying a variety of Carrier Ethernet and IP-based applications. Each IOM supports up to two Media Dependent Adapters (MDAs). Each IOM can also support up to two Multi-service Integrated Service Adapters (MS-ISAs). Media Dependant Adapters (MDAs) MDAs are supported on all platform variants and provide physical interface connectivity. MDAs are available in a variety of interface and density congurations. Integrated Media Modules (IMMs) IMMs are line cards providing integrated processing and physical interfaces on a single card. IMMs provide high-capacity, high-density Ethernet interfaces and are supported on all platform variants. Multi-Service Integrated Service Adapters (MS-ISAs) MS-ISAs are resource modules that provide specialized processing and buffering for various applications. MS-ISAs are supported on all platform variants.
BENEFITS
Increased revenues with innovative, differentiated services
As services commoditize, service differ entiation becomes key to increasing revenues. The Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS enables Ethernet service innovation with stringent SLAs to support leading-edge services and applications. Alcatel-Lucents service specialization capabilities allow service providers to capitalize on subscriber and application information embedded in the network. Services can be further differentiated using differential QoS treatment of higher-value trafc streams and by managing the quality of experience.
Investment protection
Since its introduction, the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS family has continuously evolved to satisfy evolving customer feature and scaling requirements. With the ability to support 7750 SR IP services, the 7450 ESS now offers additional investment protection for service providers looking to expand beyond Carrier Ethernet services and into the IP services domain.
Service-aware management
Along with the entire Alcatel-Lucent Service Router portfolio, the AlcatelLucent 7450 ESS family is managed by the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 SAM. With its tightly integrated SR OS OAM tools, this management platform can enable assured, simplied and integrated operations across both network and service management domains, including service-level visibility into the network for small- and large-scale deployments. In addition,
Environmentally friendly
Because Alcatel-Lucent is committed to supplying environmentally friendly solutions, pioneering advances in power efciency are incorporated into the 7450 ESS product family. Combined with environmentally sensitive manufacturing processes, careful materials selection and
