Movements in Colombo Consumers Price Index (Base: 2006/07=100)

January 2014
Price index: The general price level increased in January 2014 compared to the prices in the
previous month. The Colombo Consumers Price Index (base: 2006/07=100) for all items for
January was 177.5 as announced by the Prices Division of the Department of Census and Statistics.
An increase of 1.0 index point or 0.55 percentage was noted in January 2014 from December 2013
index which was 177.5. This increase represents expenditure value of Rs. 270.84 in the Market
Basket.

The most varieties of Rice, Chicken, Fish & Sea food and papaw, have increased slightly due to
less supply during the month of January 2014. However, the food items that experienced
decreases in prices were Potatoes Red Onions, B.Onion, Green Chilies , Limes, Garlic, Pineapple
and Mangoes. On average, expenditure value on items in Food group decreased by Rs. 194.35
(see Table 1).

Of the total increase of 0.55 percent, Food items account for an decrease of 0.39 percent mainly
due to Potatoes (0.10%), Red Onion (0.21%), B. Onion ( 0.20%) , Green Chillies 0.02%) and
Limes (0.16%). However, price increases were experienced in, Rice (0.18%), Chicken (0.02%),
Fish & Sea Food (0.10%), and Papaw (0.02%),
During this month, price decrease was noticed in sub category of Food & Non Alcoholic
Beverages. The sub groups of Transport, Housing Water Electricity Gas & Other Fuels
Furnishing Household Equipment & Routine household maintenance, Communication and
Health showed an increase. The sub categories of Clothing & Footwear, and Miscellaneous
Goods & Services showed an insignificant increases during the period. The sub groups of
Education and Recreation & Culture remained unchanged during the period under reference.

The rate of inflation as measured by the CCPI on a YoY basis significantly decreased to 4.4 percent
in January2014 (see Table 3). It is worthwhile to mention that, the year on year inflation has been
registered as one digit figure for 60 months continuously.
On year to year basis, the highest contribution to the overall increase of around 86 percent came
from nonfood commodities which increased by 4 percent in January 2014. The combined effects of
both domestically produced and imported food commodities contributed to the increase in the food
sub Index (see Table 4).
Among the food commodities, rice, vegetables and fish and sea food which have substantial weights
in the CCPI basket recorded price decreases on year to year basis. Under the Non Food category,
the prices of Diesel rose by 3%. Kerosene Oil ,Petrol and Gas remain unchanged during the
reference period.
Annual Inflation Rate
The annual average inflation rate, decreased to 6.5 percent in the month of January 2014.

In Colombo District, YoY inflation for Food decreased by 2.2 percent in January 2014while
inflation for Non Food increased by 1.5 percent when compared with month of December 2013.
