700 Series TBI

The TBI used for 87-88 Fiero 4 cylinder motors is the 700 series unit presently manufactured by Delphi Automoti e for !"# $ou can find Delphi%s public relations info for the 700 TBI here# The information includes ima&es and &eneral specification data# The articles that 'e%re interested in at the moment are (Throttle Bodies - Sin&le )oint* and (Throttle Bodies - "ultec Bottom Feed#* The first is the TBI unit and the second is the in+ector in more detail# Fiero uses the lo'-pressure ersion# ,-ote. Delphi chan&es thin&s fairly re&ularly# If they still e/ist0 these documents may be hard to find# I can1t post them due to copyri&ht#2 Belo' you can see ho' the TBI is setup and 'here some of it1s components are# I also noted the "AT sensor for you# ,"AT is also co ered in the DIS article#2 FPR, Fuel Pressure Regulator TPS, Throttle Position Sensor IAC, Idle Air Control motor F In/Out, Fuel Lines MAT, Manifold Air Temperature The desi&n of this TBI is really somethin&# It can tolerate ama3in& amounts of crap in the fuel system 'ithout plu&&in& the in+ector# There are screens ri&ht on the in+ector# $ou%d ha e to co er them nearly completely to bloc4 off in+ector flo'# To &et that much trash to the TBI0 both the main filter and the pic4up soc4 in the tan4 'ould ha e to fail or you%d ha e to ha e ma+or corrosion dama&e to the inside of the fuel lines# The 700 TBI is comprised of t'o modules# The upper section handles all the fuel meterin& and is the same re&ardless of 'hat lo'er section is used# The lo'er section handles all the air meterin& and contains the throttle plate and IA5# There is no fuel flo' bet'een the modules e/cept 'hat flo's from the in+ector tip# 700 TBI bore diameter is determined entirely in the lo'er section# ,If you 'ere punchin& out a 7000 you 'ould only machine the lo'er half# The lo'er section0 assumin& there is enou&h metal0 can be punched to the ma/imum diameter of the upper half#2 BT60 the TBI used for 87 and 88 Fiero 74 has a 48mm diameter main bore# The lar&est Delphi ma4es is 48mm# $ou could install a 48mm one but you1ll need to ream the manifold and you probably 'on1t &ain much po'er#

Do I need to use in+ector cleaner in my &as9

)robably not# The cleaners already present in most pump &as should be more than enou&h# :eep in mind that this in+ector is not bein& heat soa4ed li4e port in+ectors are after en&ine shutdo'n# It%s far from the inta4e al es and upstream of the throttle as 'ell# That pre ents fuel residue from coo4in& onto the in+ector#

The only time I can thin4 of 'here cleaner mi&ht help is if the car sat par4ed for a lon& time# That should help 'ash a'ay anythin& caused by stale fuel# 6ith this system0 if you are findin& allot of carbon in the TBI and inta4e then you ha e problems de elopin& that need more than some cleaner# ,$ou 'ill li4ely also need to chec4;replace the "AT sensor#2

Throttle )osition Sensor

The T)S is not ad+ustable# The <5" is pro&rammed to accept any sli&ht ariation in the home position of the sensor and recalibrates the home position each time the en&ine is started# The T)S does 'ear o er time0 but it should last many years under most conditions# Do not attempt to clean the sensor and ne er spray it 'ith sol ents or pressure 'ashers# The easiest 'ay to test the T)S is to use a se'in& needle to probe the terminals# It%s lon& and ery thin so you are less li4ely to cause a short if you slip# Simply slip the needle bet'een the 'ire and the seal# If you short the terminals to anythin& you could fry the <5"= >ne terminal 'ill sho' 8?# Another terminal is &round# The last is the output# The T)S output should sho' less than @#A8 olt 'hen the TBI is at idle# >utput olta&e should increase smoothly bet'een idle and 6>T# ,-ote. It is usually easier to test the sensor 'ith an analo& meter# Di&ital displays are often too +ittery#2

The In+ector
-ote. Don1t rely on the isual appearance of the in+ector output# In most cases you 'on1t be able to tell a &ood spray amount;pattern by eye# These systems nearly al'ays loo4 li4e sho'er heads 'hen runnin&# :eep in mind that unli4e port fuel in+ection0 fuel from the TBI has plenty of time to mi/ on the 'ay to the cylinders# The TBI is also on a heated manifold +ust li4e a carburetor uses# If the in+ector is lea4in& it 'ill tend to do that as soon as the system pressuri3es# The most common lea4 is >-rin& failure but it is possible for the in+ector to lea4 internally# The in+ector used in these is built li4e a tan4# I don%t thin4 I% e heard of more than one or t'o that 'as actually bad# I%d say BBC of the time if the in+ector 'eren%t firin& that you need to chec4 the fuel pressure and the si&nal from the <5"# If the in+ector is lea4in&0 ma4e sure it%s not one of the t'o > rin&s# The > rin&s are more li4ely to fail than the in+ector# If the > rin&s are bad0 then I%d rebuild the TBI and replace all the other stuff as 'ell# There are test ,(noid*2 li&hts for the in+ector used in the 700# Dse them= A sin&le noid li&ht costs around EF 'hile the in+ector costs E78 to E@00 or more#

$ou can &et noid li&hts at many parts stores# $ou can &et 'hole sets of them online from arious sources#

Idle Air 5ontrol motor

5ontrary to popular belief the IA5 is ery 'ell desi&ned and 'ill last nearly fore er under most conditions# If you thin4 there is an IA5 problem your first pro+ect should be chec4in& for acuum lea4s and <!G problems# D> ->T spray the IA5 'ith (carb* cleaner# If you must try to clean it0 use electronics parts cleaner# Stron& sol ents can eat the insulation off the coils# $ou can no' &et test ,(noid*2 li&hts for IA5 as 'ell as the in+ector# I1 e seen these for about E@0 at )ep Boys# Ideally0 you1ll use an IA5 noid 'ith an <5" scanner# The li&hts on the noid should match 'hate er the scanner says the <5" is doin&# The Huic4est test is to plu& in the noid li&ht and create a small acuum lea4 or turn on the A5# ,If the A5 'or4s###2 <ither one should cause the <5" to try to ad+ust the IA5# < en simply mo in& the throttle some should create an IA5 chan&e# When does the IAC reset? )er !" ser ice documents. The IAC valve ill !e reset !" the #omputer hen the vehi#le speed e$#eeds %& MP' hile the engine speed is a!ove ())) RPM* Or +hen the diagnosti# test #onne#tor is grounded hen the engine RPM is a!ove ())) RPM*

Fuel )ressure Ge&ulator

The fuel pressure re&ulator is ery unli4ely to fail# If;'hen it does0 it usually lea4s e/ternally# It could be possible for somethin& to &et trapped in the re&ulator and hold it open# 5orrosion of the re&ulator al e and seat are unli4ely# They appear to be Stainless Steel# :eep in mind that if you remo e the re&ulator that it may not seal reliably 'hen you put it bac4 on# Do ->T use &as4et sealer on it= If it lea4s then it needs to be replaced# The fuel pump on the other hand is a common failure item0 especially if you% e run the tan4 dry# The fuel flo' cools the pump and it 'on%t ta4e lon& to coo4 'hen runnin& dry# ,This is true of the many 4inds of pumps0 not +ust fuel pumps#2 The Huic4 test for no or lo' pressure is to pinch the fuel return line and see if you &et pressure# This may help if the re&ulator is bloc4ed open but probably 'on%t do a thin& if the pump is batty# There is a fuel pressure &au&e set a ailable for TBI and other lo'-pressure systems that don%t ha e Schrader al es# The set includes and adapter that sa e you from cuttin& the line to install a T# These sets are e/pensi e0 typically

o er E80# $ou may be able to borro' one from some parts stores# ,The e/pensi e part is the adaptor that installs bet'een the fuel line and the TBI body so you can connect the &au&e#2

Fuel Filter
It%s under the car and can be a real pain to chan&e# $ou 'ant to chan&e this e ery so often0 li4e once a year or so# These filters are built li4e a small oil filter internally and hold a tremendous amount of &arba&e# The only 'ay I can thin4 of that you could plu& the thin& are if the fuel line is &oin& bad or if the pic4up soc4 in the tan4 fails# If you seem to loose fuel pressure after the car runs for a 'hile0 the filter could be the problem# If you are &oin& to remo e the filter for any reason then +ust replace it# They don1t cost ery much and you can usually &et them e en cheaper at places li4e 6al-"art#

Gepair I Gebuildin&
When installing the IAC motor, make sure the pintle is retracted. DO NOT force the IAC motor into the throttle body If the IAC motor !ill not easily seat fully in the body then the pintle is too far out. "ou should be able to seat the motor fully into the throttle body !ith little effort. 5arefully chec4 the TBI mountin& holes in the manifold# These holes can be dama&ed if the air cleaner has impacted the trun4 'all# ,Gead the torHue strut article#2 If the holes are stripped you1ll ha e to use Jelicoils on them# If the throttle shaft is badly 'orn0 find another TBI unit# $ou should be able to find these fairly easily at any sal a&e yard# >ther'ise the 700 unit is ery easy to rebuild# Don%t mess 'ith the idle stop durin& rebuild= There%s no reason to fool 'ith it# The rebuild 4its include the fuel pressure re&ulator diaphra&m# If the F)G diaphra&m is bad then +ust buy the rebuild 4it and be done 'ith it# The 4it isn%t that much more than buyin& the diaphra&m and you &et all the &as4ets0 > rin&s0 and screens# $ou essentially end up 'ith a ne' TBI unit# The rebuild 4it usually comes 'ith more &as4ets than you 'ill use# The last one I bou&ht came 'ith three mountin& &as4ets and t'o body &as4ets# $ou should use the replacement &as4et that matches the ori&inal# Assembling and Mounting the TBI 6hen you put the t'o hal es of the body to&ether torHue the scre's to specification# After you torHue the mountin& bolts0 chec4 the body scre's a&ain and torHue as needed to reach specification# The mountin& bolts often cause the body

bolts to loosen# If you don%t chec4 them the upper body could 'arp and cause an air lea4# Jard'are Fuel meterin& to throttle body scre's TorHue 8K in;lb ,F -m2

This section is mainly a bunch of ponderin&# I1m still loo4in& into most of it# I thou&ht I1d put in 'hat I had in case it1s useful to someone 'ho 'ants a bit more po'er from the DIS motor# ,It could also be useful to someone replacin& a fried DIS motor###2 As I mentioned abo e0 the Fiero TBI has the 48mm main bore# $ou mi&ht be able to find a 48mm unit to install# Jo' much po'er you1d &ain from that I couldn1t say but it1s somethin& to 4eep in the bac4 of you head if you are buildin& up a DIS motor# It may be possible to bore out a TBI unit but I 'ouldn1t hold me breath on it# It1s not somethin& you can do 'ithout a &ood machine shop#
