Prescribed: 150cc q4h, hold if BP < 90/60

Adjunct treatment for increased ICP

Increase osmotic pressure of the glomerular filtrate, thereby inhibiting reabsorption of water and electrolytes

Recommended: 15-25% + .25 to 2g/kg over 30-60mins

CNS: confusion, HA EENT: blurred vision and rhinitis CV: tachycardia F&E: hyperkalemia and hypernatremia GU: renal failure

CONTRAINDICATION

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES (at least 5)

Hypersensitivity Anuria DHN Active intracranial bleeding

Monitor neurologic status and ICP readings in patients receiving this medication for cerebral edema Observe infusion site frequently Confer physician regarding the use of FBC IV: if solution contains crystal, warm bottle in hot water and shake vigorously Explain the purpose of the therapy to the patient
