The allowable variation in the height of the unit shall not exceed 1/32 inch plus or minus.

4.

Sixty Cycle Dry Flashover Rating: The rated 60 cycle dry flashover of an insulator is an assigned value applied by the manufacturer to indicate its performance under standard atmospheric conditions. When check tests are required, tests shall be made on three units. strings or stacks, and the rating shall be considered checked if the average of three test results shall be not less than 95 percent of the rated value.

5.

~~~p~1se (Critical) Flashover Rating: The impulse (critical) flashover rating of an insulator is an assigned value applied by a manufacturer to indicate its performance under standard atmospheric conditions at a specified polarity. When check tests are required, tests shall be made on three units, strings or stacks, and the rating shall be considered checked if the average of three test results shall be not less than 95 percent of the rated value.
6.
Sixty-Cycle Dry Withstand Test Voltage Rating:
The sixty cycle dry withstand test voltage rating of an insulator is a test voltage assigned by the manufacturer which may be applied for a period of one minute under standard atmospheric conditions without flashover or puncture. The insulators shall be set up in accordance with the section in AIEE Standard No. 41, Specimen Mounting for Electrical Test, paragraph 41-50 to 4156, inclusive. When check tests are required, not more than three units or stacks of the type involved shall be submitted to the test. The rated test voltage corrected for atmospheric conditions at the time of the test shall be applied for one minute. If no unit or stick tested flashes over or punctures, the requirement for the lot involved shall have been met.
November 28, 1958
7.
I~pp1seWithstand Test Voltage Rating:
The impulse withstand test voltage rating of an insulator is the crest value of an impulse voltage of a specified wave form assigned by the manufacturer which can be applied to the insulator under standard atmos pheric conditions without disruptive discharge or puncture of the insulator. The insulators shall be set up in accordance with the section in AIEE Standard No. 41, Specimen Mounting for Electrical Test, Par. 41-50 to 41-56, inclusive. When check tests are required, not more than three units or stacks shall be selected at random from the lot involved and the rated test voltage corrected for the atmospheric conditions at the time of test shall be applied in accordance with Par. 41-203, AIEE Standard No. 41 or latest revisions thereof. If the units selected withstand the test under the conditions therein, the requirements for the lot involved shall have been met.
8.
Sixty~Cycle Puncture Voltage Rating:
The sixty cycle puncture voltage rating of an insulator is an assigned value apolied by the manufacturer to indicate its performance under the standard conditions specified in the methods of test. When check tests are required, not more than one unit per thousand of the lot involved shall be selected at random and submitted to the test. The average value obtained shall be not less than the rating and no single value shall be less than 90% of the rating.
9.
Radio Influence Voltage Test The radio influence voltage values given in the tables apply only to new insulators tested in the factory and they are the maximum micro-volt ratings when tested at the indicated test voltage to ground, the test to be made in accordance with NEMA Publication No. 107 and AIEE Standard No. 41 or latest revisions of either. The 60 cycle rms test voltage value are approximately 10 percent higher than the lineto-ground voltage at which the insulators are usually operated. The limits for other apparatus and apparatus utilizing shall be established by standards for such apparatus. these insulators
When check tests are required, not more than one percent of the lot involved shall be selected at random and submitted to the test. If
none of the units tested exceed the rated value the requirements for the lot involved shall have been met.
November 28, 1958
10.
Mechanical Strength Rating~
The mechanical cantilever, torsion, tension and compression strength ratings of a unit, stack or string, where they apply, are assigned values for these strengths, applied by the manufacturer to indicate the performance under the specified test methods. When check tests are required, not more than three units per thousand may be selected at random to be tested in whatever proportion the purchaser desires for these various types where they apply to the insulators involved. Where two or more tests of one kind are involved, the average shall be equal to or in excess of the rating and no single value shall be less than 85 percent of the rating. In case a single unit is tested, the value obtained shall be not less than 85 percent of the rating.
11.
Threads
Internal or external threads shall have a usable length at least equal to one diameter, except where specified to the contrary.
12.
Leakage Distance Rating: The leakage distance rating of an insulator is the sum of the shortest distances measured along the surface of the insulator between the metal parts when arranged for the dry flashover test. If high resistance coatings are applied, such coatings shall be considered as effective leakage surfaces and leakage distance over such surfaces shall be included in the leakage distance. When a check of the rating is required, not more than three samples selected at random from the lot involved shall be measured. If the average of the measurement so obtained is not less than 97 percent of the rated value, the requirement shall have been met.
13.
Dr~Arcing Distance Rating
The dry arcing distance rating of an insulator is the sum of the shortest distances through air or over the surface between live metallic and grounded parts of an insulator when arranged for dry flashover test. When check tests of the rating are required, not more than three samples selected at random from the lot involved shall be measured. If the average of the measurement so obtained is not less than 97 percent of the rated value, the requirement shall have been met.
November 28, 1958
14.
Colour of Porcelain The standard colour of porcelain insulators used for air switches and bwi supports, for indoor and outdoor service, shall be brown of a unffor~i colour, not mottled. This includes the present standard trade glazes known as dark mahogany glaze, brown glaze and chocolate glaze.
15.
SixtyCycle Dew Flashover a~iting The rated sixty-cycle dew lashover value of an insulator is an assigned value applied by the manufacturer to indicate its performance under standard conditions of atmosphere ithen completely covered with condensed moisture. ~Then check tests are required, tests shall be made on three units and the ratings shall be considered checked if the average of the three test results shall be not less than 90 percent of the rated value.
Sixty-Cycle Wet Flashover Rating The rated 60 cycle wet flashover value of an insulator is an assigned
value applied by the manufacturer to indicate its performance under standard conditions of precipitation and atmosphere. When check tests are required, tests shall be made on three units, strings or stacks and the rating shall be considered checked if the average of the three test results shall be not less than 90 percent of the rated value.
21.
Sixty-Cycle wet withstand test voltage rating of sri insulator is a test voltage assigned by the manufacturer which may be applied for a period of ten seconds under standard conditions of atmosphere and precipitation without flashover or puncture. The insulators shall be set up in accordance with the section in AIEE Standard No, 4.1, tSpecimen mounting for Electrical Test, Par. 4150 to 41-56, inclusive. The precipitation shall be as for 60 cycle wet flashover test per AIEE Standard No. 41. When check tests are required, not more than three units or stacks of the type involved shall be submitted to the test and the rated test voltage corrected for relative air density but not for humidity shall be applied for ten seconds. If no unit or stack tested flashes over or punctures, the requirement for the lot involved shall have been met.
SubBases for Switch and Bus Insulators
22.
Switch and bus insulators designed for use in stacks usually require
a sub-base at the ground end to develop the full flashover voltage of the unit or stack, and sub-bases of suitable length or their equivalent, are commonly used in operation. In making 60 cycle and impulse, flashover arid withstand tests on these insulators, such sub-base or its equivalent, shall be used.
23.
Net Weight The net weights listed in the tables on pages 13 to 15 are maximum design weights established for standardization purposes. Net weights shall not exceed 105 percent of rated values.
24,
Strength Class of Fittings for Outdoor Bus Supports
The strength classification for outdoor bus support fittings expressed in terms of the gradually applied load which the fitting shall withstand without failure or fracture of any part, shall be as follows:
