Soup for
the Soul
event set
for Feb. 22
By L. HABER
The Sun
Moorestown High Schools
community service club is hold-
ing one of the biggest town-wide
events of the year. The club, offi-
cially titled Interact, is holding its
12th annual Soup for the Soul
event on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Last year, we had a turnout of
100 people, so we estimate there
will be at least that many people
this year. We are hoping for
around 150, MFS junior and In-
tercts advising chair Saylor Bris-
son said. Abby Bartlett, a junior,
also chairs advertising for Inter-
act Club.
We are in charge of publiciz-
ing the event and making sure
word gets out about it, Brisson
said.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
First Presbyterian Church in
Moorestown, a buffet-style meal
will highlight Soup for Soul. All
proceeds go to the local hunger
charity, Philabundance.
Last year, we donated $1,300 to
Philabundance, and this year our

Special to The Sun
Moorestown resident Peter Hecht, Boys and Girls Club member
Na'Cear Merlin, Elle Hecht, Calli Ungerleider and Danny Kahn
admire the fruits of their labor. The volunteers, along with 27
others from Congregation M'kor Shalom, joined forces with
members of the Boys and Girls Club of Camden County to make
warm and colorful blankets. The blankets were distributed at a
Camden shelter. The project took place at the East Camden
Clubhouse in Camden during the synagogues annual Martin
Luther King Jr. weekend of service.

In addition to the food, live en-
tertainment from local perform-
ers and a silent auction will be
part of the event.
When asked about how Soup
for Soul began more than a
decade ago, I believe it was
1999, MHS teacher and club advi-
sor Lewis Lazarow said.
There were community service
clubs at MFS before the event
started. Until the idea of Soup for
the Soul came about, none of the
existing clubs had ever incorpo-
rated the entire town into raising
money for a community service
cause.
Our conversations led us to
the upcoming Super Bowl, and
whether we could do something
to play off it as a theme. I honest-
ly can't remember who it was
back then who came up with the
idea of a SOUPer Bowl, but we
started playing around with the
concept of doing an event that re-
volved around soup, Lazarow
said. Our discussions led to the
idea of using a soup kitchen con-
cept as a platform for a fundrais-
er, and thus emerged Soup for the
Soul.
Along with Lazarow, Brisson
describes the planning of the
event as no easy feat. Interact
Club members work as commit-
tees when event planning. Mem-
bers will complete smaller tasks,
such as hanging flyers and con-
tacting restaurants last-minute,
to guarantee a surplus of soup
and donations.
The number of people on the
committees varies from year to
year, but Brisson said that lately
it has been difficult to find club
members who want to help.
Due to this problem, commit-
tee chairs end up doing most of
the work, Brisson explained.

event, while seniors Frances Lam
and Larissa Dee, along with soph-
omore Marissa Colbeck, are in
charge of getting donated gift bas-
kets and gift cards from local
businesses for use at the events
silent auction.
Although the silent auction is
a good way to bring in money, and
the live music is very enjoyable,
without the soup, we just would-
n't be able to hold the event, Bris-
son said.
To add classic accompaniment
to the soup, junior Siena Cashan
will receive bread and other
treats donated from local restau-
rants.
The venue location at the
Moorestown Presbetarian
Church, affectionately deemed
Presby by Interact members,
was chosen as the event space
after a rigorous process through-
out the years.
Over the years, the event has
moved out of our cafeteria, to the
UES...we had a couple of years at
Presby, then tried to expand the
event, so we did it at Merion
Caterers one year...we had a few
years running it at MFSand
now back at Presby, hopefully to
stay, Lazarow said.
We like to hold the event in
the church because it has a nicer
atmosphere and better kitchen fa-
cilities. Also, we've been having it
there for so many years, so we are
used to it, Brisson said.
Brisson and the rest of the In-
teract team would like to remind
all Moorestown residents inter-
ested in attending the event that
though Soup for Soul is held at
the church, the event holds no re-
ligious affiliation. The event is all
about charity and the community
coming together for a noble
cause.
The cost to attend Soup for
Soul is $7 for children 12 and
under and senior citizens. The
price is $10 for adults.
Interact Club members even in-
vented a $10 take-out option.
Take-out tickets allow ticket hold-
ers to collect two containers of as
much of their favorite soup and
bread as they can possibly fit. To
encourage maximum attendance,
tickets are available at the door as
well. Brisson encourages people
to contact her at
15brissons@gmail.com regarding
the event.
Hopefully, we can change that
this year, Brisson said about her
slight disappoint in last years
Soup for Soul attendance rate.
Though not at all a require-
ment, event participants and non-
participants alike are welcome to
simply drop off canned food or
donations. Other than Lazarow,
general Interact advisers are Tim
Hurley and Monica Bell. Main
event coordinator Julianne
Shawaryn can be contacted at
jshawaryn@mtps.com about the
event.

Writer reflects on gambling
benefits at the Jersey Shore
In response to your recent article on
gambling alternatives, I had to let out a big
smile. Oh my God! Gambling is more at-
tractive than the Jersey beaches, who
would have thunk that one? Out-of-state
tourists may come to Jersey to win and
lose hard-earned money, but the beaches?
Really.
Those folks in Delaware and Maryland
who choose to stay close to home to gamble
also are staying close to home for a sum-
mertime stay at the beach. The honky-tonk
beaches of Ocean City, Wildwood, Asbury
Park, and Point Pleasant never could beat
the gorgeous, pristine shoreline of
Delaware or Maryland with Lewes,
Bethany Beach and Chincoteague Island;
not to mention the New Jersey shore park-
ing nightmare!
And really, this big alarm of their in-
creasing number of people going on out of
state, no-line computers? A game of
roulette, or black jack is a game, no matter
how or where you slice it. The New Jersey
Lotto just doesnt cut it; people want their
rewards, like slots. Hell, you can even play
the slots online.
Bottom line, why would anybody want to
drive to Atlantic City? You describe the dis-
turbing trend to side step New Jerseys east
coast monopoly on gambling. Wasnt it a
good thing to pass the Anti-Trust Act in the
40s to break up all those railroad and oil
barons? Monopolies?
The irony of your article is the attention
to the fact that regular gambling in New
Jersey is OK, but oh no, not sports betting.
Why not?
In closing, why doesnt New Jersey take
a clue from Colorado and legalize pot. Its
going to happen eventually, so why not get
the 60 percent tax revenue now? People will
gladly pay it as evidenced by the outstand-
ing amount of dough Colorado is getting
from dope. Dough for dope should be New
Jerseys new license plate logo!

S
chool budgets are on the horizon
statewide. There once was a
time when residents had a di-
rect way to give their input to the
budget, by voting yay or nay for
its passage. That opportunity has, for
the most part, been removed in our
state, but it doesnt mean you cant,
and shouldnt, be involved in the
process.
The toughest job in New Jersey
right now? School board member has
to be at or near the top of the list.
Whether you support Gov. Christies
approach to budgeting, school board
members have had a tough time deal-
ing with a reduction in state aid over
the last few years.
The vast majority of board mem-
bers dont want to raise taxes and/or
cut services. But, sometimes, there is
no other option.
Pretty much across the state, school
districts will be doing less with less.
But did your board cut enough from
the budget? Too much? Do you agree
with the tax rate? Do you think it
should have been higher to provide
more services? What are your ideas
for cutting expenses and raising rev-
enues?
Whatever the budget situation
proves to be this year, what needs to
happen between now and next year to
make things better?
We invite you to write letters to the
editor to share your thoughts with the
rest of the community. If you support
the budget, if you oppose it, if you
have ideas that could bring additional
revenue into your school district or
help to cut costs, now is the time to
share them.
Between now and when the school
budget is passed, be involved as much
as you can. Attend school board meet-
ings and express your thoughts.
Youll be sending a message to your
board of education regarding what
you would like to see take place in fu-
ture years years that promise to be
difficult yet again.

Its January. Everyone is busy
making (or breaking) resolutions,
clearing the slate, and thinking
about summer. Thats right
warmer breezes, bright sun, and
for most, gainful employment or
meaningful volunteer opportuni-
ties.
While many students may not
be thinking any further ahead
than their next exam date or next
project due, the Moorestown De-
partment of Parks and Recre-
ation is already preparing for a
fantastic summer filled with ac-
tivities for residents of all ages.
This includes hiring staff and
volunteers to help facilitate so
many of the programs that are of-
fered to local residents. From the
Summer Parks Program, (theater
included), to sports camps and
lessons, the Department of Parks
and Recreation has something for
everyone!
The Department of Parks and
Recreation Counselor in Training
Program is one of the most
sought-after volunteer opportuni-
ties during the summer months.
CITs are hired as volunteers to
assist counselors and site super-
visors in overseeing the nearly
500 youths who attend the Sum-
mer Parks Program, or other
recreation activities during the
summer months. CITs are hired
with the intent of training them
to become paid counselors once
they are old enough to work. The
CIT program, which has been in
existence for the last seven years,
has had a successful rate of re-
hires during the course of the
program. Youth who become ac-
tive within the Summer Parks
Program often reapply year after
year, creating a safe, consistent
environment for other younger
residents.
Youth interested in employ-
ment with the Moorestown De-
partment of Parks and Recre-
ation may obtain an application
from the department offices, lo-
cated at the Church Street Recre-
ation Center, on the corner of
Third and Church streets. Appli-
cations may be picked up in per-
son, or mailed to the applicant.
Applications must be filled out
by the applicant only. Employ-
ment opportunities are available
in the following capacities: SPP
Camp Counselors (must be 16 or
older to apply); SPP Counselor in
Training (ages 13-15); Summer
Sports Program Assistants (must
be 16 or older to apply); Summer
Sports CIT (ages 13-15).
Deadline for summer employ-
ment applications is March 14.
Any applications received after
the deadline will automatically be
wait-listed. No applications will
be accepted after March 28.
There are limited spaces avail-
able for all positions.
Applications can be mailed to 2

Gabrielle Korkor, and her ther-
apy dog, Papageno, visited South
Valley Elementary Schools
kindergarten classes on Jan. 14.
Gabrielle, who is a South Val-
ley alumnus, and her mother
Janet, shared her story of volun-
teer work at local Alzheimer
nursing homes.
Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy
at the age of 1, Gabrielles posi-
tive experience with a therapy
dog inspired her to bring love and
comfort to the Alzheimers pa-
tients. Gabrielle and Janet au-
thored Puppies on Wheels,
which shares their story of giv-
ing, and their mission to teach
children to focus on abilities
rather than disabilities.
More details on Gabrielles
story can be found at www.pup-
piesonwheels.com.

MFS student part of
regional honor band
Moorestown Friends School
eighth-grade student Chloe Chen
earned one of the prestigious
clarinet spots in this year's All-
South Jersey Middle School
Honor Band.
She competed against top
young clarinetists from all over
the southern part of the state in a
blind adjudication on Saturday,
Jan. 25.
Chen's competition was partic-
ularly strong, as the clarinet divi-
sion had the largest number of
competitors in any instrument
group this year. She also audi-
tioned last year and earned a spot
as a seventh grader.
The Middle School Honor Band
concert will be held in early
March.
