What is a protg?
A protg is someone who desires to master their craft through [the] mentorship [of another].
They know they cant do it on their own, and they dont want to do it on their own. There are countless protgs who believe that what they were born to do is to help shape the world for Christ. But how do all these protgs master their craft and accelerate their development? I found myself gripped by that question.

ts possible that I couldve grown, even achieved a decent level of competency, without mentors investing in me over the years. But what I know for sure is that without them I would not be the man I need to be, to do what I do. It was out of this desire to bring the best in development to younger leaders that we designed a customized process almost a decade ago that we called The Protg Program. A protg is someone like you someone who longs to increase their impact, take their leadership to the next level, someone who dreams of a better future for their communities, who is struggling to figure out who they are and where they fit into the complex world of spiritual leadership. They long for transformation in themselves
Unfortunately, most developing leaders dont have access to something like the Protg Program. Thats why my wife Cheri and I wrote the book, Protgas a way to help young ministry leaders co-design their own protg journey as well as gain insight into developing other protgs.
In essence, we want to introduce you to the DNA of the Protg Program through this visual experience, and then
invite you to learn more through our book, Protg: Developing Your Next Generation of Church Leaders.

Character Transformation
Four Deadly Sins of Emerging Leaders
haracter is doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do, no matter the cost. That is the essence of true heroism, and the defining mark of a Christ-centered leader. Unfortunately, character is not required to be an effective leader. On the other hand, character is what makes a leader worth followingand its what gives people a compelling life to follow.
Envy is not only a deadly sin, but probably one of the most uncomfortable sins, especially for emerging leaders as they strive to distinguish themselves from everyone else. And sometimes its immensely difficult to distinguish the difference from personal development and imitation development. The pathway toward overcoming the sin of imitation involves the pursuit of living an original life, a pursuit all can attain, one we were in fact created to attain.
Every leader faces the challenge to produce or perform. Although this ambitious pursuit and intentional focus isnt inherently wrong, Im convinced that what ought to motivate us and what actually does motivate us gets all too blurry. The mindset of productivity is so pervasive in our culture that it can result in a subtle but critical shift in our approach to how we view and do ministry leadership and understand what great performance is really about.

Where do we draw the line between healthy confidence and unhealthy overconfidence? Where does the balance lie between knowing you have specific gifts to offer, and thinking you are better than you are? And how does knowing the difference actually make a difference? My experience shows me that ministry leaders dont always seek the right kind of wisdom, thus maintaining characteristics of what the Scriptures call, a fool, which is where the sin of overconfidence leads us. For the church to continue to make positive change in the future, our leadership must be driven by the pursuit of the right kind of wisdom, allowing this wisdom to be our compass into a better future.
Greed is a deadly sin because it takes more than it gives. It consumes rather than creates. It is never satisfied. What makes it worse is that greed is difficult to recognize and then acknowledge within yourself. As a result of going unchecked, greed begins to fuel and pollute our ambitions, the very ones that look good on the outside but wreck havoc in our leadership, marriage, ministry, and personal lives. Greed often presents itself in the form of entitlement, which lives and breathes for one purposeto consume. It is ugly. And, it cleverly disguises itself as ambition, drive, and a healthy dose of assertiveness. This is why every spiritual leader must intentionally pursue the pathway out of greed, one that launches them into a life of contentment, gratitude, and generosityadmirable character traits that we long for and have access to through a relationship with Jesus Christ. We set young leaders up for a fall if we encourage them to envision what they can do before they consider the kind of person they should be. -Ruth Haley Barton

Entrepreneurial Leadership
The Power of Possibility
One of the emerging, critical skill sets for emerging leaders to develop as they strive to build and establish kingdom cultures in and through their lives and ministries involves becoming a kingdom entrepreneur. This growth process revolves around God empowering followers of Christ in a way that aligns uniquely with who they are, as it propels them to reach their full potential of influence and impact in the world around them.

So, what is a
kingdom entrepreneur?
1. Kingdom entrepreneurs embody the spirit, and have developed the skill set, of a true entrepreneur, which
start new ministries, expand ones creative thinking process, serving needs that arent being met, and fostering an internal risk taking spirit that compel them to know how to overcome their fears.
[and then forever]. Jesus Christ declared that the kingdom has come, but has not yet fully comewhat many biblical scholars call the already-but-not-yet principle. Our role as ambassadors of Christ is to continue to live in and live out the kingdom of God. We are to learn what it means to fully embody this kingdom way of living, as we strive to usher in
2. Kingdom entrepreneurs harness their efforts to help others live in and experience the kingdom of God now
they wouldnt necessarily experience it in a normal church context. Ive come to call these experiences, pre-church experiences. Im also convinced that an increasing number of people will not be reached through our normal ways of doing church, which means the tribe of followers of Jesus must consider new ways of reaching our world (i.e. through learning to establish effective pre-church experiences).
3. Kingdom entrepreneurs create new ministry mediums to help nonbelievers experience Christ in a way

My personal hope [and prayer] is That you would continue to engage this eternally significant conversation about leadership development. Keep this conversation front and center in your life, leadership, and ministry. And if it serves you well to purchase a copy for yourself or your team of our book, Protg: Developing Your Next Generation of Church Leaders, do that. But whatever it takes to make the development of emerging leaders a part of the culture of your church and ministry, establish it as a core value. Before you do anything, take time to clarify your leadership development map and strategy [i.e. what is your intentional plan to develop emerging leaders?] Be clear. Be intentional. Be strategic. Be prayerful. Be everything God made you to be. www.stevesaccone.com
