Tickets must be purchased in advance because seating is limited to 92 people. They are available at the History Center or online at www.goodhistory.org. Seeking Dodge County Dairy Princess candidates

The Dodge County American Dairy Association is looking for young women to serve as Dodge County Dairy Princesses for 2014. The young women will serve as public relations spokespersons for the dairy industry. To be eligible, girls must be seniors in high school or older, and be daughters of dairy farmers, daughters of employees of dairy farms, or employed by dairy farms themselves. Princesses will be expected to participate in the statewide dairy promotion training event in May, where they will learn communication skills to help them be effective spokespersons for the dairy industry. They may also choose to participate in the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition, which will be held during the training event. The twelve finalists for Princess Kay will be selected during the weekend. Princess Kay is the statewide dairy industry ambassador who is crowned at the Minnesota State Fair. Any young women interested in being a dairy princess should contact Karen Naatz, Dodge County Dairy Princess Coordinator, at (507) 440-2382 by February 15. The Dodge County ADAs annual dairy princess banquet will be held in April.

We write happy beginnings.

State establishes public hotline for propane questions

The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) has established a public hotline for Minnesotans with propane issues or questions. The hotline will operate Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Minnesota residents with questions about the current propane situation or who are in danger of running out of heating fuel can call 651-297-1304 in the metro area or 1-800-657-3504 in greater Minnesota. The hotline is staffed with experts from the Minnesota Department of Commerce who can provide information about energy assistance programs, connect callers with resources in their home county, and provide other information. The SEOC continues to be partially activated so that the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management division (HSEM) can coordinate efforts of state agencies. HSEM is in contact with state, local and voluntary partners to coordinate any potential resource requests. There have been no such requests at this time. Governor Dayton declared a State of Peacetime Emergency in Minnesota on Monday, January 28, in response to the persistent cold weather and the increased risk that households may run out of heating fuel, a situation that would pose an immediate threat to public safety.
What consumers and Minnesota residents can do

9-1-1 only in a crisis State Hotline and Department of Commerce online resources o 1-800-657-3504 in greater Minnesota o 651-297-1304 in the metro area o Department of Commerce Energy Assistance section
Use alternative heat sources safely

People who use propane to heat their homes can take several steps at this time: Conserve energy as much as possible. Turn down thermostats and be aware of your propane use. Check in on your family members, neighbors, and friends. Call

People often turn to alternative heat sources to stay warm when the temperature plummets. The State Fire Marshal (SFM) reminds residents to use caution when using alternative heating sources. Types of alternative heating sources often seen include: Portable electric heaters Liquid-fueled heaters: kerosene, waste oil Gas-burning heaters - Propane is most common Solid-fuel heating: Wood-burning, pellet-burning Any heating appliance with an open flame needs to be vented to the outside because the combustion process of burning fuel uses oxygen and also gives off carbon monoxide a deadly combination inside of a home. Other tips when using alternative heat sources: Keep anything flammable including pets and people at least three feet away from heating equipment. Make sure portable space heaters have an automatic shut-off. Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Space heaters need constant watching. Never leave a space heater on when you go to sleep. Never place a space heater close to any sleeping person. Make sure all cords on electric heaters are in good shape and checked periodically for any frays or breaks in the insulation sur-

rounding the wires. Check the cord and outlet occasionally for overheating; if it feels hot, discontinue use. Place the heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes. Use a heater that has been tested to the latest safety standards and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. These heaters will have the most up to date safety features; older space heaters may not meet the newer safety standards.
Low-income assistance

Zumbrota visitors guide is online

www.ZumbrotaCoveredBridge.com
ZUMBROTA It became apparent in 2013 that the business community in Zumbrota needed greater assistance to promote itself. A group of Main Street businesses had organized a few downtown promotional events but no city-wide Chamber of Commerce or Commercial Club existed to publish a visitors guide website or related magazine. In early January of this year, Grimsrud Publishing, Inc. began collecting data, photos, and items of interest and has now completed a website. To find this visitors guide to Zumbrota go to www.Zumbrota CoveredBridge.com or to the News-Record website at www.zumbrota.com and click on the Zumbrota Visitors Guide on the right-side column. Pages within the website include a Community Calendar of local events that is updated every Wednesday; Arts/Entertainment; Parks/Recreation; Zumbrota Covered Bridge history; and Photos/ Art of people and miscellaneous items. The site is loaded with links and maps to assist visitors, and local residents as well. Walking trails within the city and the Goodhue Pioneer State Trail going northward are shown. Several photos of the Zumbrota Golf Club are included. It has been ranked the second best public golf course in southeastern Minnesota in a Star-Tribune poll. Summer fun is also found at Shades of Sherwood Campground & Waterpark. And one of the states best 4-H fairs is the Goodhue County Fair. The Covered Bridge Park has the city swimming pool, Kids Kingdom playground, softball fields, a skateboard park, volleyball, camping facilities and more. Other local magnets are Crossings at Carnegie and the State Theatre. The Rochester Area Visitor magazine features their events with considerable enthusiasm, as do several other media outlets. Farmers from far and wide have known about the livestock sales barn north of town for many years. Car dealers and unique shopping opportunities are numerous professional services, as well. There is a historic downtown and highway commercial. Zumbrota businesses are blessed to be located at the crossroads or hub of U.S. Highway 52 and state highways 58 and 60. Potential customer traffic practically hits businesses in the face, making signage a worthwhile investment. The challenge has always been keeping open hours that cater to the employed, many of whom work in Rochester. If you are an artist or musician and have a website, email it to grimsrud@hcinet.net and have it posted on the Arts/Entertainment page. The website design, content, and updates are done by long-time Zumbrota resident Dave Grimsrud. Advertising will be sold by Pete Grimsrud, the News-Records owner and publisher. Recommendations for changes, additions, and corrections should be directed to Dave at grimsrud@hcinet.net. A magazine-type publication will follow. It could be expanded to include neighboring locations. For example, Zumbrota doesnt have a bowling alley or a lumber yard. What one area city doesnt have is usually available in a neighoring community. Both competition and cooperation exist in the greater area. That area being the Highway 52 Golden Corridor from Hader to Oronoco.

Consumers who need financial assistance to pay heating bills may find help through the Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The Department of Commerce administers LIHEAP in Minnesota, which helps low income households, especially those with seniors, children, veterans and people with disabilities with their heating bill. Money is still available for households that have not already applied. Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman announced LIHEAP Crisis payments would increase from $500 to $1,000 for applicants heating their homes with propane and heating oil. The crisis payments could be available as early as next week. Qualifying families must apply for assistance at the local service provider in their area; Minnesota has 32 local service providers. A list of local service providers and information on applying for the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program is available by visiting the Energy Assistance section of the Division of Energy Resources website or by calling 1-800-6573710.
