Pokmon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition (?????????????? Poketto Monsuta Pi kachu?, lit.

"Pocket Monsters Pikachu"), more commonly known as Pokmon Yellow Ver sion, is a 1998 role-playing video game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld video game console. Along with the release o f Pokmon Yellow, a special edition yellow Pokmon-themed Game Boy Color was also re leased. Main article: Gameplay of Pokmon Pokmon Yellow is an enhanced version of the Game Boy color games Pokmon Red and Bl ue.[1] Like its predecessors, it is a third-person, overhead perspective and con sists of three basic screens: an overworld, in which the player navigates the ma in character; a side-view battle screen; and a menu interface, in which the play er configures his or her Pokmon, items, or gameplay settings. The player can use his or her Pokmon to battle other Pokmon. When the player encounters a wild Pokmon or is challenged by a trainer, the screen switches to a turn-based battle screen that displays the engaged Pokmon. During battle, the player may select a maneuve r for his or her Pokmon to fight using one of four moves, use an item, switch his or her active Pokmon, or attempt to flee. Pokmon have hit points (HP); when a Pokm on's HP is reduced to zero, it faints and can no longer battle until it is reviv ed. Once an enemy Pokmon faints, the player's Pokmon involved in the battle receiv e a certain number of experience points (EXP). After accumulating enough EXP, a Pokmon may level up. A Pokmon's level controls its physical properties, such as th e battle statistics acquired, and the moves learned. Catching Pokmon is another essential element of the gameplay. During battle with a wild Pokmon, the player may throw a Pok Ball at it. If the Pokmon is successfully caught, it will come under the ownership of the player. Factors in the success rate of capture include the HP of the target Pokmon and the type of Pok Ball used: the lower the target's HP and the stronger the Pok Ball, the higher the success rate of capture. The ultimate goal of the games is to complete the entries in th e Pokdex, a comprehensive Pokmon encyclopedia, by capturing, evolving, and trading to obtain all 151 creatures. Pokmon Yellow allows players to trade Pokmon between two cartridges via a Game Link Cable, including the previous games Pokmon Red an d Blue. This method of trading must be done to fully complete the Pokdex, since e ach of the two games have version-exclusive Pokmon. The Link Cable also makes it possible to battle another player's Pokmon team. Pokmon Yellow features several enhancements and changes. Including the below-ment ioned inclusion of Pikachu as the only available Pokmon to start with, Pikachu is given both a voice and a personality unique from other Pokmon. It follows the pl ayer on the overworld, and can be examined by speaking to it. While it initially has an indifferent opinion of the player, it can grow to love or hate him based on the player's actions; leveling up will keep Pikachu happy, while fainting fr equently will make it unhappy (this enhanced feature would be used again in Pokmo n HeartGold and SoulSilver, the remakes of Pokmon Gold and Silver). There is an a rea in Pokmon Yellow that features a "Surfing Pikachu" mini-game. In order to pla y it, players must have a Pikachu who can learn "Surf", a Water-based attack. At the time, players could only accomplish this by winning a contest to get a "sur fing Pikachu". However, if players use their Pikachu from Yellow in Pokmon Stadiu m and beat a certain mode under the proper circumstances, they are rewarded with the move Surf, which can be used both in battle, out of battle, and in the abov e mentioned mini-game.[2] Pokmon Yellow can also print Pokdex entries onto sticker s using the Game Boy Printer. Glitches By doing certain things in the game, the player may encounter glitches, such as the infamous MissingNo glitch. MissingNo

Main article: MissingNo If the player decides to catch MissingNo, the player's inventory will likely gli tch, and may crash and corrupt the game. If the player decides to flee or kill M issingNo, the game will glitch the town the player is in, such as NPCs walking i n unorthodox places like on a cliff wall where the main player normally can't wa lk. Note that this will happen in other games, but better in this one. Plot and setting Like Pokmon Red and Blue, Yellow takes place in the region of Kanto, which featur es habitats for 151 Pokmon species. The objectives remain the same as well, thoug h some differences exist along the way.[3] For example, in the beginning, the pl ayer is not given an option of choosing one of three starters. Instead, a wild P ikachu that Professor Oak catches becomes player's Pokmon, while the rival charac ter takes an Eevee that was intended for the player and you are then tasked to u se your Pokmon to complete the Pokdex. The plot takes from the anime, and features characters that were not featured in the game or have been enhanced to resemble their anime characters, including Jessie, James, Meowth, Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny. Similar to the anime, Pikachu refuses to evolve. Players are also given t he opportunity to obtain the original three starters. As players quest on,they g radually progress catching Pokmon for the Pokdex which you use to defeat the eight Gym Leaders and eventually the Elite Four, all the while battling Team Rocket, a gang devoted to using Pokmon in order to make themselves more powerful. If the player does not complete the Pokdex, they should only have 149 Pokmon; in the afte r game (after the Elite Four is defeated) a player may enter Cerulean Cave, wher e Mewtwo, Pokmon #150, can be found, battled and captured. [4] Development Pokmon Yellow first began development after the completion of the Japanese Pokmon Blue's development, which was made after the Japanese Pokmon Red and Green. It wa s developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld ga me console. Its release was made to coincide with the release of Pokmon: The Firs t Movie. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata commented that people likely felt Yello w to be unnecessary due to the upcoming release of Pokmon Gold and Silver, which were scheduled to be released in the same year.[5] It was released in Japan on S eptember 12, 1998, in Australia on September 3, 1999,[6] in North America on Oct ober 19, 1999, and in Europe on June 16, 2000.[7] A Pikachu-themed Game Boy Colo r bundle was released in North America on October 25, 1999.[8] A collaboration b etween Volkswagen and Nintendo resulted in the creation of a yellow Volkswagen N ew Beetle with some features taken from Pikachu. This was done as a promotion fo r Pokmon Yellow.[9] Nintendo World Report listed Pokmon Yellow as one of the notab le handheld releases in 1999.[10]
