1 Overview
1.1 General description

The cubicles of MODULARC series are modular, metalenclosed panels equipped with air-insulated busbars and cable compartments as well as with SF6 gas insulated switch disconnectors and earthing switches. The system complies with the current standards: its overall dimensions are reduced to a minimum without affecting personnel safety. The MODULARC outstanding feature is the reduction of space and installation and maintenance times. The applications ranges of the MODULARC switchgears are basically as follows: > secondary distribution > transformers substations The MODULARC cubicle thanks to their reduced dimensions, they can installed in prefabricated compact, mobile or underground substations.

EASY INSTALLATION

1.2.2

The reduced dimensions and weight of the cubicles facilitates the user in their handling and installation. The work to be carried out, when assembling more cubicles, is made easier by the possibility of removing the panel of the busbar compartment cover located over the door, thus leaving the whole front accessible to the technician. For the internal arc strength solution, the buffer sheets, supplied for the composition of the gas outlet shaft allows for the easily positioning of the posterior side, therefore, ensuring an outlet shaft of approx. 130 mm.

EASY OPERATING CONDITIONS

Every cubicle is equipped with a mimic diagram which reproduces the single-line diagram of the cubicle, and variable mimic indicators which show the actual position of the apparatus inside the cubicle. On the side of the operating site a plate shows the rotational direction of the handle, to carry out the operation required. To complete the instructions, an additional plate is fixed on the door giving a step-by-step unequivocal description of the sequences to follow for an easy and safe operation.
1.2.3 EARTHING

On the door of the cubicle there are two inspection windows suitably sized, which allows for the conditions of the cable terminals, of the fuses and of the apparatus installed in the cable compartmente to be verified.
1.2.5 ACCESSORIES

All cubicles are equipped with a main earthing busbar, which is fully

The MODULARC switchgear functionality can be upgraded by means of a wide range of accessories (refer to 5.5).

1.2.6

SEGREGATION OF THE CUBICLE UNIT

The SF6 insulated switch disconnector type LARC consists of a stainless steel metal structure and of six insulators which support the fixed and moving contacts. It is positioned, inside the cubicle, so as to form two compartments completely segregated: the busbar compartment (in the upper position) and the cable compartment (in the lower position).

5 2

In addition to the interruption and isolation function, its sealed metal enclosure also segregates the cubicle compartment. This peculiar contruction guarantees safe maintenance and replacement operations also in presence of live busbar.

METAL FRAME

The cubicle is made of a 15/10 mm galvanized steel sheet pressbent so as to obtain a light metal structure. The quadruple bending of the uprights guarantees their excellent strength and indeformability. The components are all fixed together with rivets or bolts. The roof plate is fixed with M6 type bolts, which can be removed from the outside to ease the busbars connection. The cable compartment door has been built so as to withstand the pressure ensuing from a possible internal fault and is provided with a special closing system, without handles, through hooks which can be released thus lifting the door and allowing it to be rotated counterclockwise. followed by powder coating (minimum thickness: 40 m). All other

components are made of zinc sheet.

All equipment installed inside the cubicles are removable to make maintenance operations and replacements easier. All operations are carried out from the front of the switchgear. The operating mechanisms are of the dead center passagetype or with energy accumulation. In the above last case, the energy for the movement of the circuit breaker is supplied by some previously compressed springs. Mechanical interlocks assure the right sequence of opera5.3.1

tions and prevent any possibility of contact with live parts. These interlocks provided between the switch disconnector and the earthing switch are of the hindrance type with automatic selection of the following functions; the interlock between the earthing switch and the door of the cable compartment is of the forcing type on the door and of the hindrance type with regards to the earthing switch operating mechanism. The automatic selection of interlocks imposes the correct

operation sequence: closing of the cable access door, opening of the earthing switch, closing of the switch disconnector. The separate operating seats of the line and earthing operating mechanisms prevent the personnel from performing two operations in quick and unintentional sequence.

FEEDER WITH SWITCH DISCONNECTOR UNITS (C)

The feeder with switch disconnector (line unit) consists of a switch disconnector and an earthing switch (LARC type).

The (line) switch disconnector control can be either manual or motorized (upon request). In the manual control, the only possible action is performed by means of the purposed operat-

ing lever supplied in the delivery, while in the motorized control the operation can be executed either by local or by remote control.

GROUND CONNECTION

The switchgear is equipped with an internal main earth bar which is vertically disposed on the left side of the unit. This bar connects the shunts for grounding each individual switch disconnector and earthing switch, the shield terminals and everything else that must be grounded.

Connections between the switchgear are made with horizontal busbars positioned on the down-right side of each unit. These bars are also connected to the above main earth bar.

All the access doors are grounded by means of copper plaits or flexible lines. The connection of the individual switchgear ground circuits is made by connecting the general earthing circuit cable to the suitable terminal clamps on the main earth bar.

6 Ecological considerations
The switchgear satisfies to a high degree the ecological requirements in respect of environmental protection thanks to optimization of material and energy consumption during manufacture compliance with all ecological requirements during its service life the use of recyclable materials for efficient disposal at the end of its service life. To ensure efficient and environmentally friendly dismantling and sorting of materials by responsible disposal experts, all plastic components are identified accordingly. Moreover, material and utilization data sheets are available to provide the customer with an overview about the materials used, and the disposal company with important information regarding the recycling process. Thus, the materials used for our products can be 100% recycled. This provides a vital contribution to savings in global primary energy and material resources. All materials were selected and developed so that, for example, switchgear affected by a fire in a building would have a minimal effect on the fire load (heat development and pollutants in the emissions). Another important ecological aspect is the longevity of our products (approx. 30 years), which is an extremely long service life compared to other capital goods. Also, the MODULARC switchgear units have been designed to require little maintenance, giving further energy and material savings, and to enable straightforward replacement of component parts, e.g. if new controllers have been developed. The high-voltage conducting parts of our switchgear units are hermetically sealed in an insulating inert gas (sulphur hexafluoride SF6 which is neither reactive nor toxic). Thus, all environmental influences which could reduce the service life are kept outside. The particular characteristic of the insulating gas also enables the overall size to be decreased by approximately 30% compared to switchgear without insulating gas designed with equivalent technical characteristics. This again saves on material and saves on the energy required to produce the material. The amount of insulating gas used in MODULARC is approx. 0.5% of the total weight of the switchgear. Once the switchgears service life has ended, the gas can be completely extracted via the disposal valve provided in each gas-filled compartment, and then recycled. To this end, the gas suppliers have developed an efficient recycling method. In normal operation, the gas need never be replenished during the entire service life. The switchgear has been designed as a hermetically sealed pressure system according to IEC 60694 and EN 60694.

Our design directive regarding environmentally compatible design specifies the use of materials which can be dismantled and are easily recyclable. The metals which form approximately 90% of the switchgear are easily recyclable. They can be 100% recycled as new metal components at the end of their service life. Plastics can also be recycled. The thermosetting plastics can be fragmented and reused as fillers in other plastic components; the thermoplastic materials can be recycled in new plastic components. This means that the material is recovered, processed and reused in the manufacture of new parts.
