Production Facilities Research + development

SRM design and CNC manufacture an exclusive range of improved parts for classic Norton BSA and Triumph motorcycles. Our in-house design and development team uses the industry standard for both design and CNC manufacture to enable us to design, fabricate and prototype all under one roof. Our design and manufacture is a process of continual assesment and testing of our prototypes from initial production samples to final production parts. Our aim is to supply products and design innovation that take the anxiety out of classic bike ownership. Engine & Gearbox Re-conditioning service

We re-condition on average 250+ engines per year, SRM believe the only standard for engine rebuild is as good as new, with the additon of many of our exclusive parts, we are confident we will return your engine in a better than new state. We can give a strip down and autopsy before we commence work on your engine, it is inspected for wear, damage, problems and assessment. An estimate is then compiled listing all new parts, engineering work and repairs required include a list of options such as exterior cosmetics and other useful modifications, options such as dynamic balancing, lead free conversion, tuning options etc etc. This allows you to tailor the work to your requirements. Please note that on an estimate is exactly that, we cannot foresee all problems and further additional work can only become apparent on the final assembly of the engine. Needle roller bearing & oil feed conversion

SRM have pioneered and developed this conversion for both the A10 and A65. BSA were aware of the shortcomings of the crankshaft bush and were beginning to develop their own crank oil feed conversions mainly for use with their racing engines. Our needle roller and oil end feed conversion completely eliminates the troublesome timing side bush. This is replaced by a combined ball and needle roller bearing which withstands substantial radial and axial load, the combined bearing eliminates end float, it locks the crankshaft to the timing side so no more shimming! The oil ways are altered and re-routed so the oil is fed directly from the oil pump to the big ends (via an oil seal housed in the timing casings) and through an end feed quill situated in the end of the crankshaft. Oil pressure and delivery to the big ends is uprated by at least 40 %. Early Triumph 3TA 5TA`s etc using a similar bush can be converted in this way also, to give long reliable mileage. Crankshaft main bush BSA & Triumph twins

Although the needle roller conversion and oil end feed conversion is an advantage and superior to the standard main bush. If you wish to retain the main bush it is esential that the main bush is fitted and machined to its correct tolerances. Firstly the sludge trap is cleaned out and then the crankshaft main journal re ground. The crank is then cleaned once more prior to re assembling the sludge trap. The crankcase bush housing is checked for correct tolerance and ovality. A main bush with an undersize internal diameter is fitted to the casing. The bush is bored perfectly in line and to an exact tolerance to suit the crankshaft journal. The bush is then flashed honed to give a correct oil retaining surface. The crankshaft can then be shimmed to its correct end float in the crankcases, it is now ready for assembly. If the timing side bearing housing is oversized or damaged it needs to be jig bored to an (over) size and an appropriate bush fitted (A7, A10) only. All our crankshafts are reground accurately to the correct specification radii, sizes vary with each individual crank. The main journals are generally ground to the necessary undersize, they are then highly polished to the correct surface finish. Crankshafts
At SRM we recommend our customers have their crankshaft balanced as part of their engine rebuilds. We pride ourselves in ensuring that each crankshaft leaving our factory has been carefully dynamically balanced, using our Borgo EDC 50, which ensures vibration has been drastically reduced. Vibration reduction is of a particular benefit to BSA,Triumph and Norton twin cylinder models.

Dynamic balancing of the crankshaft is where the weight of the Pistons, conrods and shells is balanced against the counterbalance weights and the flywheel of the crankshaft. The crankshaft is spun on the Borgo EDC50 which measures not only the circumferential balance but also the balance across the shaft (rocking couple). Its this method of balancing which produces the smoothest ride.

Cylinder head work

The Serdi 3.0 is one of the most accurate cylinder head machining centre available in the World today. It was designed and produced to enable the highest accuracy machining jobs on multi valve cylinder heads The seats are cut so accurately that if new valves are fitted, lapping in is not required. All heads are vacuum tested in situ. The valve seats can be cut to any angle required plus the correct relief radius to allow a more efficient flow of gas past the valve seat opening and valve head, which means a more efficient engine.

To run your classic four stroke engine on lead free petrol only the exhaust valve seats have to be replaced. This is due to the intense heat produced around the exhaust valve seat area. We replace the seats with a special hardened steel insert. We can supply compatible valves for the replacement seats. We can fit the Valve seats to any cast iron and aluminium cylinder head. SRM stock a large range of valves for BSA Twins and Triumph 650 and 750cc Twins. We also strongly recommended the use our Colsibro material valve guides composed of Copper, Nickel, Silicone alloy which resists wear, corrosion, spark erosion, has a high tensile strength and can cope with rapid temperature changes, the closer tolerance enabled by using this material allows for a cleaner running engine.

Cylinders
At SRM we have a Rottler 2MB Series cylinder boring machine. The machine has variable feed rates and is highly accurate, maximising the performance of machine operations. Increase spindle feed rates for simple oversize bores. Decrease feed rates for sleeve cuts or counter bores. The machine can bore with optional cutter heads and special carbide tools are available for counter boring and chamfer cutting

All our cylinders are bored to within 0.002 (thou), then put onto our Delapena Honer and honed to an exact size, within two tenths of a thou (0.0002) tolerance, using a 180 grade hone. The bores are then honed with a 320 grade cork stone to give a perfectly Plateau honed finish.

Conrods
The conrod is one of the most stressed components in the engine, its failure can totally ruin an engine. With most original rods being over 40 years old, we at SRM would advise that new rods are fitted to each re-conditioned engine. If you wish to continue with your original rods, then we can offer the service of polishing the rods, this helps reduce the stress factors forming in the rod, but does not guarantee their service life. Of course new big end nuts and bolts must always be used.

Getting your Engine to SRM


We can arrange collection and delivery from and to your doorstep at very competitive rates. Please however ensure that your engine or part engine is packaged very securely. Preferably it should be bolted down in a wooden box or crate. This is to minimise the risk of damage in transit. This service is by TNT , service requirements for TNT are collection and delivery to and from business address prefferred ! Private address can be used but someopne must be there all day to help the driver load and sign paperwork. 1./ UK Rates. From your doorstep. Please ensure that customs or relevant paper work is filled in correctly stating that the goods are your own personal effects, and are Vintage motorcycle parts being sent to the UK for repairs and return to the USA, also on form quote the goods are commodity code 871419000 , failure to do this will incur unnecessary Customs duties and taxes. Approx rates depends on $ exchange rate, weight of crate ! If you can find cheaper rates locally, please let us know before you send crate , so we can expect it. If a wooden crate is used, it must be made form IPCC approved and stamped wood, or plywood, if not it will not be allowed back into the USA under strict USA pest controls. 4./ Rest of the World. Wheel Section

SRM engineering has its own dedicated motorcycle wheel department, we offer a complete motorcycle wheel restoration service. The emphasis is on enduring finish and strength. The jobs we undertake range from a basic respoke with zinc plated spokes through to a complete restoration services covering:New rims (Chrome/Stainless or Alloy); Respoke with stainless steel spokes; Painting the hub; Fitting new wheel bearings; Fitting balancing new tyres; Assembling and machining the brakes. To have your wheel renovated simply send the wheel to SRM engineering and we can return it to you ready to fit.

With over 20 years experience in building classic motorcycle wheels we have worked on wheels from all manufacturers, we use the best materials to ensure long life and consistent trued wheels. Our database of wheel information is extensive and from this information we can check your wheel offset and spoke pattern to ensure perfect building.

Wheel Building Section


Starting from a blank rim (which we spin on a special jig to check for faults) we are able to put the dimples into the center of the rim in the required pattern, using a CAD program, coordinates are generated to punch or drill the spoke nipple holes to the correct angle to suit each particular hub. Each rim is then chrome plated, our chrome rims are the best finish in the UK The rims available are:-

This rim is made to be a replacement rim for the DUNLOP and JONES type of rims that were most commonly fitted to British motorcycles. It follows the DUNLOP rim profile and reflects the high quality of engineering in the DUNLOP rim. Each rim is formed with a TIG welded joint carefully done to minimize any distortion of the rim All rims are Chrome plated in Britain. As chrome rims are made to order, please allow 4 weeks extra to complete the rims. CHROME RIM PRICES

Chrome rims are made using British steel rims and plated in the UK, these are quality rim but the delay to make them can add 3 weeks to the usual turnaround time, the stainless steel rims below have a finish as good as chrome and will not corrode, we usually reccomend to use stainless , Chrome rim price each is 91.67

The stainless rim provides the looks and shine of the chrome rim with out the fuss and bother. Conical hub repair


SRM have developed the Conical rear hub bearing housing repair. The most common problem is the worn bearing housing, these rear hubs are almost impossible to find nowadays. We bore out the old worn housing, and insert a CNC machined sleeve complete with bearing retainer ring thread, bringing the centre back to NEW condition. We are able to modify the hub to take two bearings side by side on the brake side.

Electrical Section
SRM engineering specialises in all types of electrical repairs and restorations on classic motorcycle electrics. Our fully equipped electrical workshop utilises a CRYPTON MAGMASTER and a larger CRYPTON ELECTRICAL TEST BENCH also able to test magnetos, dynamos and regulator boxes all to full load. In addition we have an Alternator/Regulator test rig specially made for the LUCAS RM21 Alternator The CRYPTON MAGMASTER has been adapted specifically to be able to measure the ignition spark angle between each cylinder on K2F and K2FC magnetos. Many British bikes suffer from electrical problems, we are able to source these problems whether it be a single faulty component up to a complete rewire of the bike. SRM specialises in the renovation of LUCAS magnetos as fitted to BSA,TRIUMPH and NORTON twins. After WW2 the K2F was the main unit used to provide the ignition for all the popular twin cylinder British motorcycles, racing and competition bikes were catered for with the LUCAS K2FC. The most common problem with original magnetos is failure once hot, due to a breakdown in the insulation of the condenser or of the armature windings themselves. In the 1940s the LUCAS M01 (magdyno) unit was used extensively on a variety of British single cylinder engines from the WW2 BSA M20 through till the GOLDSTAR DBD34 and many other British Singles. The unit is easily recognisable from the mounting of the LUCAS E3H or E3L on top of the magneto.

The magnetos electrical performance is simulatedas if it were on the engine, we use the CRYPTON MAGMASTER to do a comprehensive testing programme on each magneto we rebuild. This allows us to make any slight adjustments to the magneto to achieve the best constant and accurately timed spark . The final running test programme includes:Checking the normal spark HT Voltage; Checking the maximum available spark HT Voltage; Checking the ignition timing stability over rev range; Checking the ignition timing for correct timing angle (for most twins this is 180 degrees); Running the magneto for 20 minutes whilst heating to full engine temperature. When we undertake renovation of these units we examine the following: Mechanical - Bearings, insulation, washers and shimming the armature Electrical - Armature windings, Condenser, Slip ring, Points and Bushes Magnetic - Check magnetism and regenerate magneto body Ignition - Check Spark strength, Spark timing and stability Any unit sent to us will be fully tested and then we will contact you to discuss the work required. Dynamo E3L & E3H Restoration


Dynamo Restoration
At SRM we specialise in the renovation of these particular models of LUCAS dynamos. In the 1940s the LUCAS E3H (40 Watt) unit was used extensively on a variety of British single cylinder engines later to be replaced by the more powerful LUCAS E3L (60 Watt). The E3L dynamo was used on many British twins such as the BSA A10, TRIUMPH T100,T110 and NORTON DOMINATOR. The design of this dynamo is the same throughout the range but different drive shafts are used for different models. Each dynamo is tested on the CRYPTON MAGMASTER to help determine its condition and an estimate of the cost to renovate the unit is produced. If the dynamo was to be fully restored a new armature and field coil would be fitted together with new bearings. The outer body would be Nickel plated and the alloy ends bead blasted. New brushes would be fitted and then the dynamo would be thoroughly tested. The testing procedure is in two parts:Firstly the dynamo is wired for a motor test - this runs the dynamo as a motor, the motoring speed is checked as is the polarity and rotation. This test also polarises the magnetic field in the field coil core; The dynamo is then fitted to the CRYPTON MAGMASTER or the CRYPTON ELECTRICAL TEST BENCH to be driven as if the dynamo were fitted to the engine. This test confirms the dynamo will charge when fitted to the engine and in the correct polarity for the earthing system on the bike. The dynamo is run for a minimum of 20 minutes to confirm it has a stable output. Send your dynamo to us, we will test it to ascertain its faults and contact you to discuss the work required (we can provide you with an estimate of the cost before any work is carried out). SRM 12Volt Dynamo Conversions


Dynamo Conversions There are two ways to achieve a conversion from the standard 6v system as used on all LUCAS E3L powered British bikes. It is a property of any dynamo that the faster it spins the more voltage it will produce, it is the purpose of the regulator box to set the level at which the system operates.

1. The easy way to perform a 12v conversion is basically to use your existing 6v dynamo and couple it to a 6-12v convertor electronic regulator. In a normal 6v system the dynamo will start charging at around 1000 rpm, to power a 12v system the dynamo now starts charging at about 1500rpm. This is not usually a problem as you would not normally ride around at such a low RPM. To lower the RPM at which charging occurs you can fit an srm Dynamo belt conversion kit (which has a slightly higher overall ratio than the standard chain drive and will speed the dynamo up)

The other method to achieve the 12v system is to replace the dynamo armature and field coil wound for 12v. To do this the thick 6v windings have been replaced with twice as many windings of thinner wire. The number of windings is proportional to the voltage produced - so the dynamo now produces 12v at 1000rpm. Since the wire in the 12v windings is thinner it can only carry half the current (amps) of the 6v windings so there is no actual gain in output power. As a consequence the 12v wound dynamo must be used with a compatable electronic regulator to prevent them from burning out.

This new kit available from only SRM, is the best available. Others on the market consist of a V type belt and pulleys, so the adjustment is critical, and any oil or grease will make it slip. Ours as you can see is far superior by utilising positive toothed pulleys for positive drive, and a Toothed steel wire reinforced belt that is suitable for use in oil or grease. The toothed pulleys also gear up the Dynamo speed by which gives you a positive charge at lower Rpm. The kit is a direct replacement and easy to fit. Full instructions included.

Alternators
The original alternator stators (open winding type) were prone to problems with vibration shaking windings loose. The remedy for this was to encapsulate the windings in resin. All the new alternator stators are of this type. By the 1960s the alternators had been standardized with the LUCAS RM21 being most commonly used in bikes over 500cc. With age the Rotor does lose some of its magnetic strength (although it may still appear to be strongly magnetic) this will effect the alternator output, the alternator may still be charging but may not be able to cope with full load (ie Main beam lights on).

ANALOQUE IGNITION KITS


The Analogue ignition kits have a linear (straight line) advance curve matched to each engine type. The standard coils can be used, but the use of two 6 volt coils will increase the spark energy for more high performance engines. We would recommend the use of a single DUAL SPARK coil, these coils are robust and compact and give a tremendous spark. Digital Electronic Ignition Kits


Digital electronic ignition kits are similar to the analogue units but have a digitally mapped ignition curve. The mapped advance curve is made up of a series of points that optimise the ignition advance, this wont give any extra top end power but will boost the mid range by up to 10%. Digital kits can be used with a pair of standard type 6v coils although better performance is obtained using a dual output coil.

SRM K2F & K2FC BTH Magneto Electronic conversion


At SRM we have produced an electronic ignition conversion kit for the LUCAS K2F and K2FC magnetos. The kit has been designed to retain the original look of the magneto and yet have all the advantages of the Boyer MICRO-POWER ignition system. This system is used because of the low power consumption of the electronics. The electronics are also very compact allowing them to be easily hidden on the bike. A special sensor unit, manufactured at SRM, replaces the original magneto armature. This unit provides the timing signal for the ignition box and small dual output coil. The electronic ignition system provides an extra high energy spark at start up, precise ignition timing, mapped advance curve and a high power coil. The kit is simple enough for fitting at home (no machining is required) and is supplied with all the parts required and comprehensive instructions. The kit requires a 12v electrical system but can be wired for positive or negative earth. (If you have a 6v system this can be easily converted to 12v)

Big Bore Preformance Kits New Alloy kit in development 2013


A complete, fully proven conversion for A50 or A65 BSA engines to raise the capacity to 750cc or 840cc with A10 crank fitted and 850cc up to 900cc with special long stroke one piece billet crankshafts fitted. This kit has established itself as an essential part of the competition scene over many years of use on customers engines in the engine proving world of sidecar and solo racing. The design efficiency gives a 750cc cylinder barrel height that is less than a standard A65 650cc barrel. Large well matched fins give a lower running temperature than the standard engines. Modifications are necessary to fit the kit on engines 1962-73, the crankcase mouth must be machined to take the bigger and stronger diameter of the bore sleeves. Engines earlier than 1970 require a cylinder base stud change to the 3/8 dia type (Drill and tapping thread kit is available for this job). Standard cam follower tappets are used, if a new spitfire or race camshaft is to be fitted we would advise that a new set of our cam follwers are also fitted. 500cc engines will need to be fitted with a suitable 650cc cylinder head. It is not necessary to modify the cylinder head when converting 650cc engines We recommended that the cylinder head is gas flowed, to our spec and fitted with our special 1.725 (43.5mm) large inlet valves. The 750cc kit uses 32mm inlet ports and Carburettors, 840cc to 900cc use 34mm inlet ports and carburettors. Effective, reliable lubrucation is essential due to the extra performance and power output from the big bore kits, the we cannot emphasise the importance of having the crankshaft main bush and oiling system converted to our Needle roller bearing and oil end feed modification. Kit specification:1). Cylinder Block Alloy . Bore 79mm standard Oversizes +.020 . The final bore/stroke relationship of the 79mm x 74mm. 2). Pistons complete - high grade alloy with oil grooves for better cylinder lubrication. 3). Special set of high performance push rods 4). Cylinder head gasket annealed Solid copper. Available in two thicknesses to alter compression ratio. O rings for oil drain through block. 5). High tensile Studs and fixing bolts. 6). Base gasket supplied.

Rolling Road & Diagnostic service


Motorcycle engines can only be accurately set up when they are running, at SRM we use the FUCHS BE251, an industry standard motorcycle test bench. The FUCHS BE251 (shown below) offers a comprehensive list of motorcycle test features including engine performance (inc bhp and torque), transmission testing, exhaust gas analysis, chassis alignment, ignition and electrical fault finding. The rolling road test bench features a precision made roller, which when driven by the motorcycle rear tyre, simulates the forces on the motorcycle as if it were being riden on the road (hills and pillion passengers can be simulated with the load controller). The test bench does NOT put the motorcycle under any load that you would not find in road riding conditions. The test bench features a sophisticated front wheel clamp, which holds the motorcycle in a secure position on the test bench and allows checking of the wheel alignment and suspension. The Gas analyser measures the levels of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen present in the exhaust. By monitoring the comparative levels of each of these gases the efficiency of the combustion can be evaluated. The gases are measured at different engine speeds, loads and throttle openings, the test bench computer logs the results and presents them as a graph for analysis. If you are looking to buy, sell or just test your own motorcycle (after a complete restoration before venturing on to the road) the following tests can be performed with the test bench to get the best out of your bike
